    Regeneration of plantlets from nodal and shoot tip explants of Anoectochilus elatus Lindley, an endangered terrestrial orchid

    Anoectochilus elatus Lindley is an endangered terrestrial orchid. A procedure for the regeneration of complete plantlets of A. elatus Lindley through node and shoot tip explants resulted directly in shoots when cultured on a full strength Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium supplemented with cytokinins at different concentrations. An average number of shoots per explant is 3 in shoot tip and 4 in node, respectively. The best shoot proliferation was observed in 3.0 mg/l 1-phenyl-3-(1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl)-urea (TDZ) and the mean shoot length in 3.5 mg/l 6-furfurylaminopurine (KIN) (node) and 0.01 mg/l (shoot tip). Hundred percent rooting was achieved with the regenerated shoots in the same medium with the addition of 0.3 g/l activated charcoal (AC).     In vitro propagation of Ceropegia thwaitesii Hook- an endemic species of Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, India

    In vitro propagation of Ceropegia thwaitesii Hook (Asclepiadaceae), an endemic plant species of Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu (India), was carried out. Auxiliary bud explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium fortified with cytokinins (KIN), 6-benzyl adenine (BA), 2-isopentenyladenine (2-iP) and thidiazuron (TDZ) in various concentrations and in combination with auxins indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). High frequency of shoot bud proliferation and multiplication was observed on KIN (13.94 μm) + IAA (28.54 μm). Rhizogenesis was observed on MS medium supplemented with IBA 2.46 μm and plantlets produced through micropropagation were hardened with the survival success of 73.33%.     Optimal schedule of home care visits for a health care center

    The provision of home health care services is becoming an important research area, mainly because in Portugal the population is ageing. Home care visits are organized taking into account the medical treatments and general support that elder/sick people need at home. This health service can be provided by nurse teams from Health Care Centers. Usually, the visits are manually planned and without computer support. The main goal of this work is to carry out the automatic schedule of home care visits, of one Portuguese Health Care Center, in order to minimize the time spent in all home care visits and, consequently, reduce the costs involved. The developed algorithms were coded in MatLab Software and the problem was efficiently solved, obtaining several schedule solutions of home care visits for the presented data.     Fluctuation induces evolutionary branching in a modeled microbial ecosystem

    The impact of environmental fluctuation on species diversity is studied with a model of the evolutionary ecology of microorganisms. We show that environmental fluctuation induces evolutionary branching and assures the consequential coexistence of multiple species. Pairwise invasibility analysis is applied to illustrate the speciation process. We also discuss how fluctuation affects species diversity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Electronic Devices Based on Purified Carbon Nanotubes Grown By High Pressure Decomposition of Carbon Monoxide

    The excellent properties of transistors, wires, and sensors made from single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) make them promising candidates for use in advanced nanoelectronic systems. Gas-phase growth procedures such as the high pressure decomposition of carbon monoxide (HiPCO) method yield large quantities of small diameter semiconducting SWNTs, which are ideal for use in nanoelectronic circuits. As-grown HiPCO material, however, commonly contains a large fraction of carbonaceous impurities that degrade properties of SWNT devices. Here we demonstrate a purification, deposition, and fabrication process that yields devices consisting of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes with electronic characteristics vastly superior to those of circuits made from raw HiPCO. Source-drain current measurements on the circuits as a function of temperature and backgate voltage are used to quantify the energy gap of semiconducting nanotubes in a field effect transistor geometry.     Cost-Effectiveness of a Chemoprophylactic Intervention with Single Dose Rifampicin in Contacts of New Leprosy Patients

    In 2008, 249,007 new leprosy patients were detected in the world. It therefore remains necessary to develop new and effective interventions to interrupt the transmission of M. leprae. We assessed the economic benefits of single dose rifampicin (SDR) for contacts as chemoprophylactic intervention in the control of leprosy. The study is based on a large trial including 21,711 contacts of 1,037 patients with newly diagnosed leprosy. We gave a single dose of rifampicin or placebo to contacts and followed them up for four years. The main outcome measure was the development of clinical leprosy. The cost effectiveness was expressed in US dollars per prevented leprosy case. Chemoprophylaxis with SDR for preventing leprosy among contacts of leprosy patients is cost-effective at all contact levels and thereby a cost-effective prevention strategy. In total 6,009wasinvestedand38leprosycaseswerepreventedafter2years,costing6,009 was invested and 38 leprosy cases were prevented after 2 years, costing 158 per prevented leprosy case. Implementation studies are necessary to establish whether this intervention is acceptable and feasible in other leprosy endemic areas of the world

    PET imaging of tumor glycolysis downstream of hexokinase through noninvasive measurement of pyruvate kinase M2

    Cancer cells reprogram their metabolism to meet increased biosynthetic demands, commensurate with elevated rates of replication. Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) catalyzes the final and rate-limiting step in tumor glycolysis, controlling the balance between energy production and the synthesis of metabolic precursors. We report here the synthesis and evaluation of a positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer, [(11)C]DASA-23, that provides a direct noninvasive measure of PKM2 expression in preclinical models of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). In vivo, orthotopic U87 and GBM39 patient-derived tumors were clearly delineated from the surrounding normal brain tissue by PET imaging, corresponding to exclusive tumor-associated PKM2 expression. In addition, systemic treatment of mice with the PKM2 activator TEPP-46 resulted in complete abrogation of the PET signal in intracranial GBM39 tumors. Together, these data provide the basis for the clinical evaluation of imaging agents that target this important gatekeeper of tumor glycolysis

    A pp-adic Approach to the Weil Representation of Discriminant Forms Arising from Even Lattices

    Suppose that MM is an even lattice with dual MM^{*} and level NN. Then the group Mp2(Z)Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z}), which is the unique non-trivial double cover of SL2(Z)SL_{2}(\mathbb{Z}), admits a representation ρM\rho_{M}, called the Weil representation, on the space C[M/M]\mathbb{C}[M^{*}/M]. The main aim of this paper is to show how the formulae for the ρM\rho_{M}-action of a general element of Mp2(Z)Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z}) can be obtained by a direct evaluation which does not depend on ``external objects'' such as theta functions. We decompose the Weil representation ρM\rho_{M} into pp-parts, in which each pp-part can be seen as subspace of the Schwartz functions on the pp-adic vector space MQpM_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}. Then we consider the Weil representation of Mp2(Qp)Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p}) on the space of Schwartz functions on MQpM_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}, and see that restricting to Mp2(Z)Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z}) just gives the pp-part of ρM\rho_{M} again. The operators attained by the Weil representation are not always those appearing in the formulae from 1964, but are rather their multiples by certain roots of unity. For this, one has to find which pair of elements, lying over a matrix in SL2(Qp)SL_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p}), belong to the metaplectic double cover.     Photoconductivity of biased graphene

    Graphene is a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications such as photodetectors, terahertz imagers, and plasmonic devices. The origin of photoresponse in graphene junctions has been studied extensively and is attributed to either thermoelectric or photovoltaic effects. In addition, hot carrier transport and carrier multiplication are thought to play an important role. Here we report the intrinsic photoresponse in biased but otherwise homogeneous graphene. In this classic photoconductivity experiment, the thermoelectric effects are insignificant. Instead, the photovoltaic and a photo-induced bolometric effect dominate the photoresponse due to hot photocarrier generation and subsequent lattice heating through electron-phonon cooling channels respectively. The measured photocurrent displays polarity reversal as it alternates between these two mechanisms in a backgate voltage sweep. Our analysis yields elevated electron and phonon temperatures, with the former an order higher than the latter, confirming that hot electrons drive the photovoltaic response of homogeneous graphene near the Dirac point
