    Cynipid wasps inducing galls on plants of the genus Picris (Asteraceae) in Europe, with a description of a new species of Phanacis Foerster (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) from the Iberian Peninsula.

    The cynipid species (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae), which induceing galls on plants of the genus Picris (Asteraceae) in Europe, are revised. A key for the identification of adult wasps and galls of the three known species is provided. Phanacis helminthiae (De Stefani) is recorded from Sicily for the first time after since its description, and re-described with newly collected materials. The final instar larva of Phanacis caulicola is described and new biological data on the sex ratio and life-cycle of this species are given. A new species, Phanacis comosae nov. sp., is described from the Southwest portion of the Iberian Peninsula. The new species is closely allied related to P. caulicola and induces conspicuous galls in flower receptacles of Picris comosa

    Model for resource allocation in decentralized networks using Interaction nets

    This article presents the description of a model for allocating resources using Interaction Nets and a strategy for playing public goods. In the description of the model first shows the behavior of the allocation of resources towards the nodes depending on the usefulness of the network and the satisfaction of the agents. Then the generalization of the model with Interaction Nets is described, and a simulation of this behavior is made. It is found that there is an emerging behavior condition in the dynamics of the interaction when assigning resources. To test the model, the interaction of sharing the Internet in an ad hoc network is done. The interaction is shown in the general model obtained

    Order-of-magnitude speedup for steady states and traveling waves via Stokes preconditioning in Channelflow and Openpipeflow

    Steady states and traveling waves play a fundamental role in understanding hydrodynamic problems. Even when unstable, these states provide the bifurcation-theoretic explanation for the origin of the observed states. In turbulent wall-bounded shear flows, these states have been hypothesized to be saddle points organizing the trajectories within a chaotic attractor. These states must be computed with Newton's method or one of its generalizations, since time-integration cannot converge to unstable equilibria. The bottleneck is the solution of linear systems involving the Jacobian of the Navier-Stokes or Boussinesq equations. Originally such computations were carried out by constructing and directly inverting the Jacobian, but this is unfeasible for the matrices arising from three-dimensional hydrodynamic configurations in large domains. A popular method is to seek states that are invariant under numerical time integration. Surprisingly, equilibria may also be found by seeking flows that are invariant under a single very large Backwards-Euler Forwards-Euler timestep. We show that this method, called Stokes preconditioning, is 10 to 50 times faster at computing steady states in plane Couette flow and traveling waves in pipe flow. Moreover, it can be carried out using Channelflow (by Gibson) and Openpipeflow (by Willis) without any changes to these popular spectral codes. We explain the convergence rate as a function of the integration period and Reynolds number by computing the full spectra of the operators corresponding to the Jacobians of both methods.Comment: in Computational Modelling of Bifurcations and Instabilities in Fluid Dynamics, ed.     EVOLUCIÓN DE LOS PARTOS MÚLTIPLES EN LA REGIÓN DE MURCIA DESDE 1.996 HASTA 2.008: IMPLICACIONES PSICOSOCIALES

    Multiple delivery carries a series of psychosocial implications which concern both the parents and the social and health care systems. The possibility of complications increases in multiple pregnancies, as well as the needs for attention and care for both, the babies and the parents. Therefore, information about the evolution of this kind of pregnancies is very important to identify people’s health needs. Objectives: The main objective of this research is to show the evolution of multiple deliveries in Spain, and in the Murcia Region between 1996 and 2008. Additional objectives are to examine those data according to mother’s age at maternity, and to analyze possible consequences of such evolution. Method: Information has been obtained from the National Institute of Statistics and the Murcia Regional Centre of Statistics databases. Results: Multiple births rate has changed form 13.1‰ in 1996 to 18.4‰ in 2008 in Murcia (12.7‰ to 19.4‰ in Spain). The biggest increase has taken place in mothers older than 30 years old. Conclusion: This situation presents important implications for the families and for the health system as a whole. Families need to reach an adaptation and health workers might collaborate giving adequate information and orientation.Los partos múltiples conllevan una serie de implicaciones psicosociales que afectan tanto a los padres como a los sistemas de atención sanitaria y social. La posibilidad de que se produzcan complicaciones se incrementa en el caso de un embarazo múltiple, así como las necesidades de atención y cuidados tanto para los bebés como para los padres. Disponer de información acerca de la evolución de este tipo de embarazos resulta, por tanto, de gran relevancia para identificar necesidades de salud en la población. Objetivos: Este trabajo tiene como principales objetivos presentar la evolución de los partos múltiples entre los años 1996 y 2008, tanto en la Región de Murcia como en España, examinar estos datos en función de la edad de la madre en el momento del nacimiento y analizar las posibles repercusiones de esta evolución. Método: Para ello se ha utilizado la información disponible en las bases de datos del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y del Centro Regional de Estadística de Murcia. Resultados: En los últimos años se ha producido un importante aumento en el número de partos múltiples tanto a nivel nacional como en las distintas comunidades autónomas, la Región de Murcia entre ellas. La tasa de partos gemelares o de orden mayor ha pasado a ser de 13.1‰ en 1996 a 18.4‰ en 2008 en Murcia (12.7‰ a 19.4‰ en España). El mayor incremento se ha producido en los grupos de madres a partir de los 30 años. Conclusiones: Esta situación presenta implicaciones importantes para el sistema de salud en su conjunto y para las familias. Éstas necesitan conseguir una adaptación en la que puede colaborar de forma decisiva el profesional sanitario proporcionando una información y orientación adecuada

    Functional and molecular characterization of inherited platelet disorders in the Iberian Peninsula: results from a collaborative study

    BACKGROUND: The diagnostic evaluation of inherited platelet disorders (IPDs) is complicated and time-consuming, resulting in a relevant number of undiagnosed and incorrectly classified patients. In order to evaluate the spectrum of IPDs in individuals with clinical suspicion of these disorders, and to provide a diagnostic tool to centers not having access to specific platelets studies, we established the project "Functional and Molecular Characterization of Patients with Inherited Platelet Disorders" under the scientific sponsorship of the Spanish Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. PATIENTS/METHODS: Subjects were patients from a prospective cohort of individuals referred for clinical suspicion of IPDs as well as healthy controls. Functional studies included light transmission aggregation, flow cytometry, and when indicated, Western-blot analysis of platelet glycoproteins, and clot retraction analysis. Genetic analysis was mainly performed by sequencing of coding regions and proximal regulatory regions of the genes of interest. RESULTS: Of the 70 cases referred for study, we functionally and molecularly characterized 12 patients with Glanzmann Thrombasthenia, 8 patients with Bernard Soulier syndrome, and 8 with other forms of IPDs. Twelve novel mutations were identified among these patients. The systematic study of patients revealed that almost one-third of patients had been previously misdiagnosed. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides a global picture of the current limitations and access to the diagnosis of IPDs, identifies and confirms new genetic variants that cause these disorders, and emphasizes the need of creating reference centers that can help health care providers in the recognition of these defects

    The interplay between nonlinear dynamic systems and noise has proved to be of great relevance in several application areas. In this presentation, we focus on the areas of information transmission and storage. We review some recent results on information transmission through nonlinear channels assisted by noise. We also present recent proposals of memory devices in which noise plays an essential role.     Structural Determinants of the Dictyostatin Chemotype for Tubulin Binding Affinity and Antitumor Activity Against Taxane- and Epothilone-Resistant Cancer Cells

    A combined biochemical, structural, and cell biology characterization of dictyostatin is described, which enables an improved understanding of the structural determinants responsible for the high-affinity binding of this anticancer agent to the taxane site in microtubules (MTs). The study reveals that this macrolide is highly optimized for MT binding and that only a few of the structural modifications featured in a library of synthetic analogues resulted in small gains in binding affinity. The high efficiency of the dictyostatin chemotype in overcoming various kinds of clinically relevant resistance mechanisms highlights its potential for therapeutic development for the treatment of drug-resistant tumors. A structural explanation is advanced to account for the synergy observed between dictyostatin and taxanes on the basis of their differential effects on the MT lattice. The X-ray crystal structure of a tubulin−dictyostatin complex and additional molecular modeling have allowed the rationalization of the structure−activity relationships for a set of synthetic dictyostatin analogues, including the highly active hybrid 12 with discodermolide. Altogether, the work reported here is anticipated to facilitate the improved design and synthesis of more efficacious dictyostatin analogues and hybrids with other MT-stabilizing agents.We thank Peter T.
