Rheo-processing of an alloy specifically designed for semi-solid metal processing on the Al-Mg-Si system
Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing is a promising technology for forming alloys and composites to near-net shaped products. Alloys currently used for SSM processing are mainly conventional aluminium cast alloys. This is an obstacle to the realisation of full potential of SSM processing, since these alloys were originally designed for liquid state processing and not for semi-solid state processing. Therefore, there is a significant need for designing new alloys specifically for semi-solid state processing to fulfil its potential. In this study, thermodynamic calculations have been carried out to design alloys based on the Al-Mg-Si system for SSM processing via the ‘Rheo-route’. The suitability of a selected alloy composition has been assessed in terms of the criteria considered by the thermodynamic design process, mechanical properties and heat treatability. The newly designed alloy showed good processability with rheo-processing in terms of good control of solid fraction during processing and a reasonably large processing window. The mechanical property variation was very small and the alloy showed good potential for age hardening by T5 temper heat treatment after rheo-processing
Growth process and diameter structure of Pinus tabulaeformis forest for soil and water conservation in the hilly loess region of China
Using stem analysis method, the biomass, growing process and diameter structure of 21-year shady and sunny slope Pinus tabulaeformis forest were investigated in hilly loess-gully region. Results showed that there were distinct difference in the indexes, tree height, diameter at breast height (DBH) and timber volume between shady and sunny slope forest. The biomass, growth status and its diameter structure of shady slope forest were greater than those in sunny slope forest. The fast-growing period of tree was from 9 to 13 years. After 13 years, the annual increment of shady slope forest was greater than that of the sunny slope forest (the annual increment of shady slope forest reached 0.26 m•a-1, whileit was about 0.1 m•a-1 in sunny slope forest in the 21st year).The DBH growth increment of 2 forests were reduced greatly after 13 years, but the declining degree of shady slope forest was less than the sunny slope forest. The current annual increment of shady slope forest was greater than the sunny slope forest after 17 years. There was little difference in the increment of 2 timber production before 13 years. But the increment of shady forest was greater than the sunny forest after 13 years (in the 21styear, the annual increment was 0.0023 m3 in shady slope, but in sunny slope it was only 0.0015 m3). The summit of DBH distribution curve was both partial to left, while the skewness (SK was 0.75) of shadyforest was lower than that of the sunny forest (SK was 1.03) and kurtosis (K was 1.05) of shady forest was higher than that of sunny forest (K was 0.94). The results indicated the density structure of sunny slope forest was greater than shady slope forest
Soil-water interacting use patterns driven by Ziziphus jujuba on the Chenier Island in the Yellow River Delta, China
The determination of water use patterns of plants in a coastal ecosystem is critical to our understanding of local eco-hydrological processes and predicting trends in ecological succession under the background of global climate change. The water use patterns of Ziziphus jujuba, the dominant species on the Chenier Island in the Yellow River Delta, were examined following summer rainfall events. Stable oxygen isotope analysis was employed to analyze the effects of rainfall on the stable isotopic composition in potential water sources in Z. jujuba. The IsoSource model was used to estimate the contributions of potential water sources for xylem water in Z. jujuba. The results showed heavy rainfall could recharge both soil and groundwater but contributed little to the O-18 values in deep soil water (60-100cm) and groundwater. Light rainfall had an effect only on surface soil water (0-40cm). Z. jujuba mainly absorbed deep soil water on non-rainy days. Rainwater became the predominant water source for Z. jujuba during and immediately after heavy rainfall. Switching the plant's main water source between deep soil water and rainwater provided Z. jujuba with a competitive advantage and improved the water use efficiency of Z. jujuba in this coastal ecosystem
Hemodynamic, Functional, and Clinical Responses to Pulmonary Artery Denervation in Patients With Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension of Different Causes: Phase II Results From the Pulmonary Artery Denervation-1 Study
Background—The mechanisms underlying pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are multifactorial. The efficacy of
pulmonary artery denervation (PADN) for idiopathic PAH treatment has been evaluated. This study aimed to analyze the
hemodynamic, functional, and clinical responses to PADN in patients with PAH of different causes.
Methods and Results—Between April 2012 and April 2014, 66 consecutive patients with a resting mean pulmonary arterial
pressure ≥25 mmHg treated with PADN were prospectively followed up. Target drugs were discontinued after the PADN
procedure. Hemodynamic response and 6-minute walk distance were repeatedly measured within the 1 year post PADN
follow-up. The clinical end point was the occurrence of PAH-related events at the 1-year follow-up. There were no PADNrelated
complications. Hemodynamic success (defined as the reduction in mean pulmonary arterial pressure by a minimal
10% post PADN) was achieved in 94% of all patients, with a mean absolute reduction in systolic pulmonary arterial
pressure and mean pulmonary arterial pressure within 24 hours of −10 mmHg and −7 mmHg, respectively. The average
increment in 6-minute walk distance after PADN was 94 m. Worse PAH-related events occurred in 10 patients (15%),
mostly driven by the worsening of PAH (12%). There were 8 (12%) all-cause deaths, with 6 (9%) PAH-related deaths.
Conclusions—PADN was safe and feasible for the treatment of PAH. The PADN procedure was associated with significant
improvements in hemodynamic function, exercise capacity, and cardiac function and with less frequent PAH-related
events and death at 1 year after PADN treatment. Further randomized studies are required to confirm the efficacy of
PADN for PAH
Feigenbaum graphs: a complex network perspective of chaos
The recently formulated theory of horizontal visibility graphs transforms
time series into graphs and allows the possibility of studying dynamical
systems through the characterization of their associated networks. This method
leads to a natural graph-theoretical description of nonlinear systems with
qualities in the spirit of symbolic dynamics. We support our claim via the case
study of the period-doubling and band-splitting attractor cascades that
characterize unimodal maps. We provide a universal analytical description of
this classic scenario in terms of the horizontal visibility graphs associated
with the dynamics within the attractors, that we call Feigenbaum graphs,
independent of map nonlinearity or other particulars. We derive exact results
for their degree distribution and related quantities, recast them in the
context of the renormalization group and find that its fixed points coincide
with those of network entropy optimization. Furthermore, we show that the
network entropy mimics the Lyapunov exponent of the map independently of its
sign, hinting at a Pesin-like relation equally valid out of chaos.Comment: Published in PLoS ONE (Sep 2011
Accumulation capacity of ions in cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) supplied with sea water
Cabbage seedlings were grown hydroponically to study the effects of different concentrations of seawater on the seedling growth, ion content under one-fourth strength Hoagland's nutrient solution in the greenhouse. The biomass of various organs of cabbage seedlings as well as the whole plants was significantly higher in the treatments with 1 g and 2 g sea salt/L than the no-salt control, but the treatments with 4, 5 or 6 g sea salt/L caused a decrease in growth. Root/shoot ratio remained at the level of control regardless of the sea salt treatment. Na+ and Cl- concentration in different parts of cabbage seedlings increased significantly, whereas K+ and Ca2+ concentration generally increased at low concentrations of sea salt and then decreased with increasing seawater concentration. Sodium and K+ concentrations were significantly higher in the stems than roots and leaves regardless of the sea salt treatment. The sea salt treatment increased Mg2+ concentration in stems and leaves of cabbage seedlings. An increase in Na+ and Cl- concentration in roots, stems and leaves of cabbage seedlings was the main contributor to declining ratios of K+/Na+, Ca2+/Na+ and Mg2+/Na+. The obtained data suggest that cabbage seedlings have strong ability to sustain seawater stress by the regulation of transport and distribution of ions
A new concept for the combination of optical interferometers and high-resolution spectrographs
The combination of high spatial and spectral resolution in optical astronomy
enables new observational approaches to many open problems in stellar and
circumstellar astrophysics. However, constructing a high-resolution
spectrograph for an interferometer is a costly and time-intensive undertaking.
Our aim is to show that, by coupling existing high-resolution spectrographs to
existing interferometers, one could observe in the domain of high spectral and
spatial resolution, and avoid the construction of a new complex and expensive
instrument. We investigate in this article the different challenges which arise
from combining an interferometer with a high-resolution spectrograph. The
requirements for the different sub-systems are determined, with special
attention given to the problems of fringe tracking and dispersion. A concept
study for the combination of the VLTI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer)
with UVES (UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph) is carried out, and several other
specific instrument pairings are discussed. We show that the proposed
combination of an interferometer with a high-resolution spectrograph is indeed
feasible with current technology, for a fraction of the cost of building a
whole new spectrograph. The impact on the existing instruments and their

Factors associated with problem drinking among women employed in food and recreational facilities in northern Tanzania.
BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that alcohol consumption is associated with increased risk of HIV infection. To determine factors associated with problem drinking, we analyzed data collected in two prospective cohorts of at-risk female food and recreational facility workers in northern Tanzania. METHODS: We enrolled HIV seronegative women aged 18-44 years and employed in the towns of Geita, Kahama, Moshi, and Shinyanga. At enrolment, women were interviewed to obtain information about alcohol use, using CAGE and AUDIT screening scales, and risk factors for HIV infection. Blood and genital samples were collected for detection of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We characterized alcohol use, concordance, and agreement of the scales, and examined the associations between characteristics of participants and problem drinking as defined by both scales using logistic regression. Lastly, we assessed problem drinking as a risk factor for recent sexual behavior and prevalent STIs. RESULTS: Among enrollees, 68% women reported ever drinking alcohol; of these 76% reported drinking alcohol in the past 12 months. The prevalence of problem drinking was 20% using CAGE and 13% using AUDIT. Overall concordance between the scales was 75.0% with a Kappa statistic of 0.58. After adjusting for age, independent factors associated with problem drinking, on both scales, were marital status, occupation, facility type, increasing number of lifetime sexual partners, and transactional sex in the past 12 months. In addition, women who were problem drinkers on either scale were more likely to report having ≥ 1 sexual partner (CAGE: aOR = 1.56, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.10-2.23; AUDIT: aOR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.34-3.00) and transactional sex (CAGE: aOR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.26-2.56; AUDIT: aOR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.04-2.18), in the past 3 months. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that interventions to reduce problem drinking in this population may reduce high-risk sexual behaviors and contribute in lowering the risk of HIV infection
