Longfellow sostuvo una larga y rica relación con sus traductores y admiradores hispanos, aunque no llegó a conocerlos a todos personalmente. Valentín Letelier: the Influence of positivism on Chilean Educational Thought

This article examines the influence of Positivism on Latin American educational thought. It argues that while this influence is significant for the number of institutions that it inspired, little attention has been paid to perhaps the most elaborate presentation of positivist educational ideas: Valentín Letelier’s Filosofía de la Educación (1892). Building on national experience concerning the development of education, Letelier used Positivism to reform the curriculum of secondary education and was a primary force behind the foundation of the Instituto Pedagógico (1889). His view of the school can be summarized as a philosophy based on a rational and systematic hierarchy of the sciences, which he applied to the educational field. As a result, the curriculum reflected a progression from the study of the most general to the most specific sciences. The training of professors at the Instituto was geared precisely to steer students to achieve a systematic and comprehensive view of society based on scientific criteria. Letelier’s work created a new sensitivity, and provided a significant link to subsequent efforts to reform national education

LA REPÚBLICA DEL ORDEN: SIMÓN BOLÍVAR, ANDRÉS BELLO Y LAS TRANSFORMACIONES DEL PENSAMIENTO POLÍTICO DE LA INDEPENDENCIA

    No full text
This essay explores the relationship between Andrés Bello and Simón Bolívar, arguing that their history of friendship and misunderstandings had a profound impact on Bello's decision to come to Chile. It is furthermore argued that Bello would have avoided any references to Bolívar had it not been for the allegations, aired in the press, that he had betrayed the Libertador. However, in the process of responding to the accusations, he conveyed a view of Bolívar that fit well with his own desire to promote the rule of law in Chile and beyond. It is not coincidental, then, that he transmitted highly negative views of Bolívar at the same time that he was about to launch the Civil Code. The essay concludes by suggesting that Bolívar and Bello represent two different perspectives on post-independence republicanism, one informed by classical sources, and the other drawing on emerging liberal views on the centrality of civil legislation for the consolidation of the new order in the continent
