    A Further Unique Chondroitin Sulfate from the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei with Antithrombin Activity that Modulates Acute Inflammation

    The detailed structure of a further Chondroitin Sulfate from Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp (sCS) is described. The backbone structure was established by 1H/13C NMR, which identified 3-O-sulfated GlcA, 4-O-sulfated GalNAc, 6-O-sulfated GalNAc, and 4,6-di-O-sulfated GalNAc residues. GlcA is linked to GalNAc 4,6 di S and GlcA 3S is linked to GalNAc 4S, GalNAc 4,6 di-S and GalNAc6S residues. The anticoagulant properties of this sCS were evaluated by activated partial thromboplastin time, anti-IIa, anti-Xa and anti-heparin cofactor II-mediated activities, and sCS failed to stabilise antithrombin in a fluoresence shift assay. The anti-inflammatory effect of sCS was explored using a model of acute peritonitis, followed by leukocyte count and measurement of the cytokines, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α. The compound showed low clotting effects, but high anti-IIa activity and HCII-mediated thrombin inhibition. Its anti-inflammatory effect was shown by leukocyte recruitment inhibition and a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. Although the biological role of sCS remains unknown, its properties indicate that it is suitable for studies of multi-potent molecules obtained from natural sources

    Negotiating authoritarian law and (dis)order: medicines, drug shops, and regulators in a poor Yangon suburb

    Global health policymakers have identified Myanmar as a source of high drug resistance and informal pharmaceutical markets in need of tighter state regulation. The World Health Organization drafted a Global Action Plan on antibiotic resistance (often referred to as antimicrobial resistance) that seeks to address it. Myanmar is one of over a hundred countries that has followed the World Health Organization’s prescription and drafted its own National Action Plan. Through participating in the everyday life of a family pharmacy, we observed that in practice the outcomes of global plans for AMR, such as regulating access to antibiotics, are shaped by people’s limited access to affordable health care, low salaries, and the military’s authoritarian role in Myanmar politics. We followed how negotiations between state officials and drug vendors evolved towards a mutual understanding (as opposed to following written rules) after a Food and Drug Administration raid, intended to enforce the regulation of the sales of illegal medicines. Rather than uncritically pushing state-centric action, those working to promote the regulation of medicines must attend more carefully to how different modes of political authority and governance, combined with histories of health provision, shape drug policy in practice. Otherwise, they risk contributing, if not intensifying, already existing health and social injustices, whilst also failing to generate their intended outcomes, such as meaningful changes to antibiotic sales and reductions in resistance

    A ultra low power CMOS pA/V transconductor and its application to wavelet filters

    Two topologies of ultra low-power CMOS triode transconductor are proposed. Its input transistors are kept in the triode region to benefit from the lowest gm/ID ratio. The gm is adjusted by a well defined (W/L) and VDS, the latter a replica of the tuning voltage VTUNE. Transconductance down to hundreds of pA/V are obtained and used to implement a 6th order wavelet filter. The resulting design complies with a 1.5V supply and a 0.35νm CMOS process. The total power consumption of the wavelet filters using the first and second topology of transconductor equals 51nW and 114nW, respectively. Copyright 2007 ACM

    Comparative chromosome painting discloses homologous Segments in distantly related mammals

    Comparative chromosome painting, termed ZOO-FISH, using DNA libraries from flow sorted human chromosomes 1,16,17 and X, and mouse chromosome 11 discloses the presence of syntenic groups in distantly related mammalian Orders ranging from primates (Homo sapiens), rodents (Mus musculus), even-toed ungulates (Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis and Muntiacus reevesi) and whales (Balaenoptera physalus). These mammalian Orders have evolved separately for 55-80 million years (Myr). We conclude that ZOO-FISH can be used to generate comparative chromosome maps of a large number of mammalian species

    Integrable models: from dynamical solutions to string theory

    We review the status of integrable models from the point of view of their dynamics and integrability conditions. Some integrable models are discussed in detail. We comment on the use it is made of them in string theory. We also discuss the Bethe Ansatz solution of the SO(6) symmetric Hamiltonian with SO(6) boundary.     Environmental Costs of Government-Sponsored Agrarian Settlements in Brazilian Amazonia

    Brazil has presided over the most comprehensive agrarian reform frontier colonization program on Earth, in which ~1.2 million settlers have been translocated by successive governments since the 1970's, mostly into forested hinterlands of Brazilian Amazonia. These settlements encompass 5.3% of this ~5 million km2 region, but have contributed with 13.5% of all land conversion into agropastoral land uses. The Brazilian Federal Agrarian Agency (INCRA) has repeatedly claimed that deforestation in these areas largely predates the sanctioned arrival of new settlers. Here, we quantify rates of natural vegetation conversion across 1911 agrarian settlements allocated to 568 Amazonian counties and compare fire incidence and deforestation rates before and after the official occupation of settlements by migrant farmers. The timing and spatial distribution of deforestation and fires in our analysis provides irrefutable chronological and spatially explicit evidence of agropastoral conversion both inside and immediately outside agrarian settlements over the last decade. Deforestation rates are strongly related to local human population density and road access to regional markets. Agrarian settlements consistently accelerated rates of deforestation and fires, compared to neighboring areas outside settlements, but within the same counties. Relocated smallholders allocated to forest areas undoubtedly operate as pivotal agents of deforestation, and most of the forest clearance occurs in the aftermath of government-induced migration

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background -</p> <p>Beta-2 adrenergic receptor gene polymorphisms Gln27Glu, Arg16Gly and Thr164Ile were suggested to have an effect in heart failure. We evaluated these polymorphisms relative to clinical characteristics and prognosis of alarge cohort of patients with heart failure of different etiologies.</p> <p>Methods -</p> <p>We studied 501 patients with heart failure of different etiologies. Mean age was 58 years (standard deviation 14.4 years), 298 (60%) were men. Polymorphisms were identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.</p> <p>Results -</p> <p>During the mean follow-up of 12.6 months (standard deviation 10.3 months), 188 (38%) patients died. Distribution of genotypes of polymorphism Arg16Gly was different relative to body mass index (χ<sup>2 </sup>= 9.797;p = 0.04). Overall the probability of survival was not significantly predicted by genotypes of Gln27Glu, Arg16Gly, or Thr164Ile. Allele and haplotype analysis also did not disclose any significant difference regarding mortality. Exploratory analysis through classification trees pointed towards a potential association between the Gln27Glu polymorphism and mortality in older individuals.</p> <p>Conclusion -</p> <p>In this study sample, we were not able to demonstrate an overall influence of polymorphisms Gln27Glu and Arg16Gly of beta-2 receptor gene on prognosis. Nevertheless, Gln27Glu polymorphism may have a potential predictive value in older individuals.</p
