Non-perturbative gauge/gravity correspondence in N=2 theories
We derive the exact supergravity profile for the twisted scalar field emitted
by a system of fractional D3 branes at a Z2 orbifold singularity supporting N=2
quiver gauge theories with unitary groups and bifundamental matter. At the
perturbative level this twisted field is "dual" to the gauge coupling but it is
corrected non-perturbatively by an infinite tower of fractional D-instantons.
The explicit microscopic description allows to derive the gravity profile from
disk amplitudes computing the emission rate of the twisted scalar field in
terms of chiral correlators in the dual gauge theory. We compute these quantum
correlators using multi-instanton localization techniques and/or Seiberg-Witten
analysis. Finally, we discuss a non-perturbative relation between the twisted
scalar and the effective coupling of the gauge theory for some simple choices
of the brane set ups.Comment: 42 pages. 3 figures, PDFLaTe
Minimal Flavour Violation with hierarchical squark masses
In a supersymmetric model with hierarchical squark masses we analyze a
pattern of flavour symmetry breaking centered on the special role of the top
Yukawa coupling and, by extension, of the full Yukawa couplings for the up-type
quarks. For sufficiently heavy squarks of the first and second generation this
leads to effective Minimal Flavour Violation of the Flavour Changing Neutral
Current amplitudes. For this to happen we determine the bounds on the masses of
the heavy squarks with QCD corrections taken into account, properly including
previously neglected effects. We believe that the view presented in this paper
altogether strengthens the case for hierarchical sfermions.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure. v2: an equation correcte
Effects of intermediate scales on renormalization group running of fermion observables in an SO(10) model
In the context of non-supersymmetric SO(10) models, we analyze the
renormalization group equations for the fermions (including neutrinos) from the
GUT energy scale down to the electroweak energy scale, explicitly taking into
account the effects of an intermediate energy scale induced by a Pati--Salam
gauge group. To determine the renormalization group running, we use a numerical
minimization procedure based on a nested sampling algorithm that randomly
generates the values of 19 model parameters at the GUT scale, evolves them, and
finally constructs the values of the physical observables and compares them to
the existing experimental data at the electroweak scale. We show that the
evolved fermion masses and mixings present sizable deviations from the values
obtained without including the effects of the intermediate scale.Comment: Comments: 20 pages, 3 figures. Final version published in JHE
Preoperative bevacizumab combined with letrozole and chemotherapy in locally advanced ER- and/or PgR-positive breast cancer: clinical and biological activity
The antiangiogenic agent bevacizumab showed synergistic effects when combined with chemotherapy in advanced breast cancer. We presently investigated the activity of bevacizumab in combination with chemotherapy, including capecitabine and vinorelbine, and endocrine therapy, including letrozole (+triptorelin in premenopausal women), as primary therapy for patients with ER and/or PgR ⩾10% T2–T4a-c, N0–N2, M0 breast cancer. Biological end point included the proliferative activity (Ki67), whereas clinical end points were clinical response rate, pathological complete response (pCR) and tolerability. Circulating endothelial cells (CECs) and their progenitors, as surrogate markers of antiangiogenic activity, were measured at baseline and at surgery.Thirty-six women are evaluable. A clinical response rate of 86% (95% CI, 70–95) and no pCR were observed; Ki67 was significantly decreased by 71% (interquartile range, −82%, −62%). Toxicity was manageable: two grade 3 hypertension, four grade 3 deep venous thrombosis and no grade >2 proteinuria were observed. Treatment significantly decreased the percentage of viable CECs and prevented the chemotherapy-induced mobilisation of circulating progenitors. Basal circulating progenitors were positively associated with clinical response. In conclusion, bevacizumab is feasible and active in association with primary chemoendocrine therapy for ER-positive tumours in terms of proliferation inhibition, clinical response and antiangiogenic activity
New Penrose Limits and AdS/CFT
We find a new Penrose limit of AdS_5 x S^5 giving the maximally
supersymmetric pp-wave background with two explicit space-like isometries. This
is an important missing piece in studying the AdS/CFT correspondence in certain
subsectors. In particular whereas the Penrose limit giving one space-like
isometry is useful for the SU(2) sector of N=4 SYM, this new Penrose limit is
instead useful for studying the SU(2|3) and SU(1,2|3) sectors. In addition to
the new Penrose limit of AdS_5 x S^5 we also find a new Penrose limit of AdS_4
x CP^3.Comment: 30 page
Flavor Physics in an SO(10) Grand Unified Model
In supersymmetric grand-unified models, the lepton mixing matrix can possibly
affect flavor-changing transitions in the quark sector. We present a detailed
analysis of a model proposed by Chang, Masiero and Murayama, in which the
near-maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle governs large new b -> s
transitions. Relating the supersymmetric low-energy parameters to seven new
parameters of this SO(10) GUT model, we perform a correlated study of several
flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes. We find the current bound on
B(tau -> mu gamma) more constraining than B(B -> X_s gamma). The LEP limit on
the lightest Higgs boson mass implies an important lower bound on tan beta,
which in turn limits the size of the new FCNC transitions. Remarkably, the
combined analysis does not rule out large effects in B_s-B_s-bar mixing and we
can easily accomodate the large CP phase in the B_s-B_s-bar system which has
recently been inferred from a global analysis of CDF and DO data. The model
predicts a particle spectrum which is different from the popular Constrained
Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM). B(tau -> mu gamma) enforces
heavy masses, typically above 1 TeV, for the sfermions of the degenerate first
two generations. However, the ratio of the third-generation and
first-generation sfermion masses is smaller than in the CMSSM and a (dominantly
right-handed) stop with mass below 500 GeV is possible.Comment: 44 pages, 5 figures. Footnote and references added, minor changes,

Lepton flavour violation in the MSSM
We derive new constraints on the quantities delta_{XY}^{ij}, X,Y=L,R, which
parametrise the flavour-off-diagonal terms of the charged slepton mass matrix
in the MSSM. Considering mass and anomalous magnetic moment of the electron we
obtain the bound |delta^{13}_{LL} delta^{13}_{RR}|<0.1 for tan beta=50, which
involves the poorly constrained element delta^{13}_{RR}. We improve the
predictions for the decays tau -> mu gamma, tau -> e gamma and mu -> e gamma by
including two-loop corrections which are enhanced if tan beta is large. The
finite renormalisation of the PMNS matrix from soft SUSY-breaking terms is
derived and applied to the charged-Higgs-lepton vertex. We find that the
experimental bound on BR(tau -> e gamma) severely limits the size of the MSSM
loop correction to the PMNS element U_{e3}, which is important for the proper
interpretation of a future U_{e3} measurement. Subsequently we confront our new
values for delta^{ij}_{LL} with a GUT analysis. Further, we include the effects
of dimension-5 Yukawa terms, which are needed to fix the Yukawa unification of
the first two generations. If universal supersymmetry breaking occurs above the
GUT scale, we find the flavour structure of the dimension-5 Yukawa couplings
tightly constrained by mu -> e gamma.Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures; typo in Equation (35) and (49) correcte
The s ---> d gamma decay in and beyond the Standard Model
The New Physics sensitivity of the s ---> d gamma transition and its
accessibility through hadronic processes are thoroughly investigated. Firstly,
the Standard Model predictions for the direct CP-violating observables in
radiative K decays are systematically improved. Besides, the magnetic
contribution to epsilon prime is estimated and found subleading, even in the
presence of New Physics, and a new strategy to resolve its electroweak versus
QCD penguin fraction is identified. Secondly, the signatures of a series of New
Physics scenarios, characterized as model-independently as possible in terms of
their underlying dynamics, are investigated by combining the information from
all the FCNC transitions in the s ---> d sector.Comment: 54 pages, 14 eps figure
