    Personalised Learning Spaces and Self-Regulated Learning :Global examples of Effective Pedagogy

    Recent educational research attests to an increasing awareness of the need to encourage learner control over the entire learning process. Web 2.0 and social software tools are capable of supporting informal conversation, dialogue and collaborative content generation, enabling access to a wide raft of ideas and representations. Used appropriately, they can shift control to the learner by promoting agency, autonomy and engagement in social networks that straddle multiple real and virtual learning spaces independent of physical, geographic, institutional and organisational boundaries. However, in order for selfregulated learning to come to fruition, students need not only to be able to choose and personalise what tools and content are available, but also to have access to appropriate scaffolding to support their learning. Emerging practices with social software, examples of which are showcased in this paper, signal the need for pedagogies that are more social, personal and participatory. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for practice, including current challenges faced by tertiary educators

    A High Power Hydrogen Target for Parity Violation Experiments

    Parity-violating electron scattering measurements on hydrogen and deuterium, such as those underway at the Bates and CEBAF laboratories, require luminosities exceeding 103810^{38}cm−2^{-2}s−1^{-1}, resulting in large beam power deposition into cryogenic liquid. Such targets must be able to absorb 500 watts or more with minimal change in target density. A 40~cm long liquid hydrogen target, designed to absorb 500~watts of beam power without boiling, has been developed for the SAMPLE experiment at Bates. In recent tests with 40~μ\muA of incident beam, no evidence was seen for density fluctuations in the target, at a sensitivity level of better than 1\%.     3D seismic imaging of buried Younger Dryas mass movement flows: Lake Windermere, UK

    Windermere is a glacially overdeepened lake located in the southeastern Lake District, UK. Using the threedimensional(3D) Chirp subbottom profiler, we image mass movement deposits related to the Younger Dryas(YD) within a decimetre-resolution 3D seismic volume, documenting their internal structure and interactionwith preexisting deposits in unprecedented detail. Three distinct flow events are identified and mappedthroughout the 3D survey area. Package structures and seismic attributes classify them as: a small (totalvolume of c. 1500 m3) debris flow containing deformed translated blocks; a large (inferred total volume ofc. 500,000 m3), homogeneous fine-grained mass flow deposit; and a debris flow (inferred total volume ofc. 60,000 m3) containing small (c. 8.0×2.0 m) deformed translated blocks. Geomorphological mapping oftheir distribution and interaction with preexisting sediments permit the reconstruction of a depositionalhistory for the stratigraphic units identified in the seismic volume.<br/

    Prototyping a Health and Wellbeing Platform in a Living Lab Setting

    A key challenge older adults face is the ability to live independently. Losing their everyday independence is a major concern for older adults. Partly, because they fear this could lead to an involuntary move to an assisted living facility instead of living independently. Since 2015, the Dutch government encourages their citizens to age-in-place, but at the same time struggles how to implement new healthcare regulations. To support both the government and the citizens, we propose an online platform to match supply and demand in the health and wellbeing domain. Such a platform should not only enable end-users to enhance self-management, but also support them to find solutions for everyday problems related to aging-in-place. To illustrate our action design research we established a Living Lab in a metropolitan area in the Netherlands, and developed a prototype of the proposed platform in a real-life setting. The usability of the alpha version of the platform is evaluated with six potential end-users. Their comments are input for next iterations where the ADR team will constantly observe the effects of the platform in a complex social process within the Living Lab setting

    Factors affecting communication between transgender and non-binary individuals and general practitioners: Recommendations for inclusive interactions

    Research shows that transgender and non-binary (TNB) individuals frequently experience discrimination and mistreatment in health care settings. These negative experiences cause TNB people to underutilize health care and, when they do utilize it, may affect communication of health information. Moving from social cognitive theory (SCT) and theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study investigated what factors influence pre-, during, and post physician visit communication between TNB individuals and general practitioners (GPs) in the Netherlands. Between March and May 2022, fifteen TNB individuals and ten GPs participated in semi-structured interviews and focus groups about their experiences with GP-TNB interactions. The findings suggest that GPs addressing TNB people, GP knowledge and education, GP office procedures and environment, and social environment (in)directly facilitate or hamper communication. These findings support previous ideas about the influence of factors such as knowledge and social environment on one's behavior, as previously described in SCT and TPB. They also add and specify how pre-determined and novel factors affect whether TNB people feel welcome and comfortable at GP offices and if GPs feel equipped to provide TNB people with quality care. More specifically, to facilitate appropriate health communication, GPs are advised to ask patients about their pronouns, adjust intake forms, and put up TNB-specific posters or a Pride flag in their offices. TNB people are advised to make an introductory appointment to discuss their gender identity. Lastly, TNB topics should be included in medical curricula and online GP resources
