    Maximum Score Estimates of the Determinants of Residential Mobility: Implications for the Value of Residential Attachment and Neighborhood Amenities

    This paper examines the determinants of the decision of low-income renters to move out of their current dwelling. Maximum score estimation is shown t be superior to ordinary discrete choice estimation techniques (probit, logit) for this problem, ad for similar discrete choices that require revering a previously optimal decision. The estimation reveals psychological costs of moving for typical low income renters of at least 8 percent of their income; these costs are even higher for older, longer tenure, or minority households. Policies that displace low income renters will have large social costs. In addition, the estimation results are used to calculate implicit household willingness to pay (WTP) for neighborhood amenities. This WTP based on mobility behavior is much greater than WTP estimates derived using hedonic methods, and is argued to be more accurate. This paper uses a semiparametric empirical technique to estimate the determinants of the decision of low-income renters to move out of their dwelling. These estimates show that low-income residents highly value remaining in their dwelling. In addition, these estimates are used to illustrate an alternative method to measure willingness to pay for neighborhood amenities. Moving decisions are usually examined with standard discrete choice models such as probit or logit (e.g., Venti and Wise (1984), or Weinberg, Friedman, and Mayo (1981). But the moving decision presents econometric difficulties for standard discrete choice models. As will be explained in section 1, because the household decision about moving is conditional on having previously preferred the original location, the disturbance term in mobility models is unlikely to follow the simple distributional forms required for probit or logit estimation. Maximum score estimation is an alternative estimation technique for discrete choice models that is robust to unusual distributions of the disturbance term. Although the theoretical properties of maximum score estimation have been well-explored (see Manski (1975,1985)), our paper presents one of the first empirical applications of maximum score techniques. Maximum score estimation of our residential mobility model yields similar parameter estimates to probit estimation, but much smaller standard errors. This advantage of greater precision may prove attractive to other researchers. We use our estimates of the residential mobility model to calculate the value to households of remaining at their current dwelling rather than being forced to move out. We use the household's mobility response to rent changes to infer a monetary value of remaining in the current dwelling. Our calculations indicate that the typical low-income renter household is willing to pay at least 8 percent of its annual income to avoid being forced out of its current dwelling. These "psychological moving costs" increase greatly for older or longer tenure households. Large "psychological moving costs" have important implications for public policy towards low-income neighborhoods. Neighborhood improvement policies or private market forces may displace low-income renters. If the losses suffered by low-income renters due to being forced out of their current dwelling unit are significant, as indicated in this paper, then it is important to include these losses in any evaluation of the net benefits of a neighborhood improvement program. In addition, policy makers might want to consider policies to prevent or compensate for privately-induced displacement. Estimates of the monetary value of low-income renters' psychological moving costs are important to determining the effects of these policies, and deciding appropriate compensation. Finally, this paper uses the residential mobility estimates to infer the willingness t pay (WTP) of low-income renters for neighborhood amenities such as the physical condition of the neighborhood, neighborhood school quality, and the safety of the neighborhood from crime. The relative responsiveness of household mobility to changes in these neighborhood amenities, versus changes in rents, implicitly reveals households' monetary valuations of these amenities. The more common approach to measuring household WTP for neighborhood amenities is the hedonic price approach, which relies n the equilibrium relationship between housing prices and amenities. The calculations in this paper suggest that mobility-based WTP estimates for amenities may often be greater than hedonic based estimates of WTP. We consider which approach is more accurate.     Application of the Virtual Fields Method to determine dynamic properties at intermediate strain rates

    Crash analysis simulation is now very important in automotive industry to assess automotive crashworthiness and safety. In order to acquire reliable crash simulation results, precise material behaviors at intermediate strain rates should be used as input data. To determine the stress-strain curves at various strain rates, the number of expensive and complicated experiments is large. The present study aims at determining the stress-strain curves of sheet metals at various strain rates from a single dynamic experiment. A new type of high speed tensile tester for sheet metal specimens was built and high speed tensile tests were carried out. Full-field heterogeneous strain fields were measured by a digital image correlation technique using a highspeed camera. The load data was acquired from strain gauges attached to the elastic deformation region on the specimen. Then, an inverse identification scheme with a rate dependent hardening law was applied to retrieve dynamic parameters. The stress-strain curves of advanced high strength steel at intermediate strain rates (100 /s - 300 /s) were successfully obtained from a single experiment.11Ysciescopu

    Optical properties of pyrochlore oxide Pb2Ru2O7δPb_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7-{\delta}}

    We present optical conductivity spectra for Pb2Ru2O7δPb_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7-{\delta}} single crystal at different temperatures. Among reported pyrochlore ruthenates, this compound exhibits metallic behavior in a wide temperature range and has the least resistivity. At low frequencies, the optical spectra show typical Drude responses, but with a knee feature around 1000 \cm. Above 20000 \cm, a broad absorption feature is observed. Our analysis suggests that the low frequency responses can be understood from two Drude components arising from the partially filled Ru t2gt_{2g} bands with different plasma frequencies and scattering rates. The high frequency broad absorption may be contributed by two interband transitions: from occupied Ru t2gt_{2g} states to empty ege_{g} bands and from the fully filled O 2p bands to unoccupied Ru t2gt_{2g} states.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Improvement of Switching Speed of a 600-V Nonpunch-through Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor Using Fast Neutron Irradiation

    AbstractFast neutron irradiation was used to improve the switching speed of a 600-V nonpunch-through insulated gate bipolar transistor. Fast neutron irradiation was carried out at 30-MeV energy in doses of 1 × 108 n/cm2, 1 × 109 n/cm2, 1 × 1010 n/cm2, and 1 × 1011 n/cm2. Electrical characteristics such as current–voltage, forward on-state voltage drop, and switching speed of the device were analyzed and compared with those prior to irradiation. The on-state voltage drop of the initial devices prior to irradiation was 2.08 V, which increased to 2.10 V, 2.20 V, 2.3 V, and 2.4 V, respectively, depending on the irradiation dose. This effect arises because of the lattice defects generated by the fast neutrons. In particular, the turnoff delay time was reduced to 92 nanoseconds, 45% of that prior to irradiation, which means there is a substantial improvement in the switching speed of the device

    Light bending by nonlinear electrodynamics under strong electric and magnetic field

    We calculate the bending angles of light under the strong electric and magnetic fields by a charged black hole and a magnetized neutron star according to the nonlinear electrodynamics of Euler-Heisenberg interaction. The bending angle of light by the electric field of charged black hole is computed from geometric optics and a general formula is derived for light bending valid for any orientation of the magnetic dipole.     Design Strategy for a Scalable Virtual Pharmacy Patient

    This paper reports on the completion of the first stage of research of a pilot study undertaken in collaboration by 3 Australian universities. The pilot involves the development of a virtual pharmacy patient (VPP) as a study of its effects on student learning when it is used as a formative assessment tool for pharmacy students in interviewing and diagnosing a patient. The design criteria that have been incorporated into the virtual patient system are described. The novelty of this system is in its ability to track and report on the style and appropriateness of student questioning of a virtual pharmacy patient. One of the main problems in this type of system is recognition of free-text student questions. An overview of the pragmatic solution to this and the systems potential as a tool to generate a lexicon for more complex question recognition is presented

    An Oral Selective Alpha-1A Adrenergic Receptor Agonist Prevents Doxorubicin Cardiotoxicity

    Alpha-1 adrenergic receptors (α1-ARs) play adaptive and protective roles in the heart. Dabuzalgron is an oral selective α1A-AR agonist that was well tolerated in multiple clinical trials of treatment for urinary incontinence, but has never been used to treat heart disease in humans or animal models. In this study, the authors administered dabuzalgron to mice treated with doxorubicin (DOX), a widely used chemotherapeutic agent with dose-limiting cardiotoxicity that can lead to heart failure (HF). Dabuzalgron protected against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity, likely by preserving mitochondrial function. These results suggest that activating cardiac α1A-ARs with dabuzalgron, a well-tolerated oral agent, might represent a novel approach to treating HF

    Dynamic assembly of Hda and the sliding clamp in the regulation of replication licensing

    Regulatory inactivation of DnaA (RIDA) is one of the major regulatory mechanisms of prokaryotic replication licensing. In RIDA, the Hda-sliding clamp complex loaded onto DNA directly interacts with adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-bound DnaA and stimulates the hydrolysis of ATP to inactivate DnaA. A prediction is that the activity of Hda is tightly controlled to ensure that replication initiation occurs only once per cell cycle. Here, we determined the crystal structure of the Hda-�� clamp complex. This complex contains two pairs of Hda dimers sandwiched between two �� clamp rings to form an octamer that is stabilized by three discrete interfaces. Two separate surfaces of Hda make contact with the �� clamp, which is essential for Hda function in RIDA. The third interface between Hda monomers occludes the active site arginine finger, blocking its access to DnaA. Taken together, our structural and mutational analyses of the Hda-�� clamp complex indicate that the interaction of the �� clamp with Hda controls the ability of Hda to interact with DnaA. In the octameric Hda-�� clamp complex, the inability of Hda to interact with DnaA is a novel mechanism that may regulate Hda function. ? The Author(s) 2017.113Ysciescopu

    Mechanical versus thermodynamical melting in pressure-induced amorphization: the role of defects

    We study numerically an atomistic model which is shown to exhibit a one--step crystal--to--amorphous transition upon decompression. The amorphous phase cannot be distinguished from the one obtained by quenching from the melt. For a perfectly crystalline starting sample, the transition occurs at a pressure at which a shear phonon mode destabilizes, and triggers a cascade process leading to the amorphous state. When defects are present, the nucleation barrier is greatly reduced and the transformation occurs very close to the extrapolation of the melting line to low temperatures. In this last case, the transition is not anticipated by the softening of any phonon mode. Our observations reconcile different claims in the literature about the underlying mechanism of pressure amorphization.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Structural and superconducting properties of MgB2x_{2-x}Bex_x

    We prepared MgB2x_{2-x}Bex_{x} (x=0x=0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.6) samples where B is substituted with Be. MgB2_{2} structure is maintained up to x=0.6x=0.6. In-plane and inter-plane lattice constants were found to decrease and increase, respectively. Superconducting transition temperature TcT_{c} decreases with xx. We found that the TcT_{c} decrease is correlated with in-plane contraction but is insensitive to carrier doping, which is consistent with other substitution studies such as Mg1x_{1-x}Alx_{x}B2_{2} and MgB2x_{2-x}Cx_{x}.
