    Multi-scale waves in sound-proof global simulations with EULAG

    EULAG is a computational model for simulating flows across a wide range of scales and physical scenarios. A standard option employs an anelastic approximation to capture nonhydrostatic effects and simultaneously filter sound waves from the solution. In this study, we examine a localized gravity wave packet generated by instabilities in Held-Suarez climates. Although still simplified versus the Earth’s atmosphere, a rich set of planetary wave instabilities and ensuing radiated gravity waves can arise. Wave packets are observed that have lifetimes ≤ 2 days, are negligibly impacted by Coriolis force, and do not show the rotational effects of differential jet advection typical of inertia-gravity waves. Linear modal analysis shows that wavelength, period, and phase speed fit the dispersion equation to within a mean difference of ∼ 4%, suggesting an excellent fit. However, the group velocities match poorly even though a propagation of uncertainty analysis indicates that they should be predicted as well as the phase velocities. Theoretical arguments suggest the discrepancy is due to nonlinearity — a strong southerly flow leads to a critical surface forming to the southwest of the wave packet that prevents the expected propagation

    Effect of dried distillers grains with solubles withdrawal regimens on finishing pig performance and carcass characteristics

    A total of 962 pigs (PIC L337 × 1050, initial BW = 86.1 lb) were used to determine the effect of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) withdrawal regimens on growth performance and carcass traits. Pigs were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 treatments (6 pens per treatment) balanced by average BW within gender. Treatments were: (1) a corn-soybean meal-based diet without DDGS fed for 89 d (control), (2) 30% DDGS fed from d 0 to 48 and 0% DDGS fed from d 48 to 89, (3) 30% DDGS fed from d 0 to 69 and 0% DDGS fed from d 69 to 89, (4) 30% DDGS fed from d 0 to 48 and 15% DDGS fed from d 48 to 89, (5) 30% DDGS fed from d 0 to 69 and 15% DDGS fed from d 69 to 89, and (6) 30% DDGS diet fed from d 0 to 89. All diets contained 3% added fat. Pig BW, ADG, ADFI, and F/G were determined every 14 d. At the end of the trial, carcass fat quality was evaluated. There were no treatment × gender interactions (P > 0.21) for any criteria evaluated. Although there were some differences in F/G within phases, there were no overall differences (P > 0.35) in growth performance among treatments. Final weight numerically decreased as total DDGS level increased. Feeding continuously or withdrawing DDGS from the diet, regardless of the amount or duration, had no significant effect (P > 0.39) on any of the carcass criteria measured. Pigs fed DDGS had increased (P 0.57) revenue or income over feed cost. In summary, DDGS reduction or withdrawal 3 or 6 wk before market did not affect growth performance or totally alleviate its negative effect on carcass fat iodine value

    Effects of increasing glycerol and dried distillers grains with solubles on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs

    A total of 1,160 barrows (PIC, initially 68.4 lb) were used in a 97-d study to determine the influence of glycerol and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on growing-finishing pig performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality. Pigs were blocked by weight and randomly allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments with 7 replications per treatment. Pigs were fed corn-soybean meal-based diets arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial with main effects of glycerol (0, 2.5, or 5%) and DDGS (0 or 20%). Overall (d 0 to 97), there were no glycerol × DDGS interactions (P > 0.12) for growth performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass fat iodine value (IV). Increasing glycerol did not affect (P > 0.14) ADG or F/G. Adding 20% DDGS to the diet did not affect ADG. However, pigs fed diets with 20% added DDGS had greater (P < 0.02) ADFI resulting in poorer (P < 0.01) F/G than pigs fed diets with no DDGS. For carcass characteristics, pigs fed increasing glycerol tended to have increased (linear, P < 0.11) yield. Pigs fed diets with added DDGS had increased (P < 0.01) jowl fat, belly fat, and backfat IV compared with pigs fed diets with no DDGS. However, increasing dietary glycerol tended to decrease (linear, P < 0.11) backfat IV. In conclusion, feeding pigs 20% DDGS worsened F/G and increased carcass fat IV, whereas feeding glycerol did not influence growth performance but tended to improve carcass yield and reduce backfat IV
