Continuum modelling of granular particle flow with inelastic inter-particle collisions
The kinetic theory of granular flow is a successful model for gas-solid flows. However, inelastic collisions between particles, among other mechanisms, cause agglomeration of particles, which may be the reason why undue sensitivity of the model to any slight inelasticity in inter-particle collisions has been seen previously. In contrast to a dry (i.e. no interstitial gas) granular system, this tendency to agglomerate in a gas driven two-phase system may be countered by the carrier gas turbulence. In this paper, a heuristic model for particle gas turbulence interaction is introduced within the scope of a generalized kinetic theory model which incorporates the carrier fluid effect on particulate stresses. The numerical results for the flow of granular particles in vertical pipes, which considers slightly inelastic inter-particle collisions, are in reasonably good agreement with published experimental data. Even in this relatively simple model, the results indicate that the interactions between the particle phase and gas turbulence need to be appropriately addressed in any kinetic theory based model for gas solid flows
On polynomials orthogonal with respect to certain Sobolev inner products
AbstractWe are concerned with polynomials {pn(λ)} that are orthogonal with respect to the Sobolev inner product ă f, g ăλ = â fg dÏ + λ â fâČgâČ dÏ, where λ is a non-negative constant. We show that if the Borel measures dÏ and dÏ obey a specific condition then the Pn(λ)'s can be expanded in the polynomials orthogonal with respect to dÏ in such a manner that, subject to correct normalization, the expansion coefficients, except for the last, are independent of n and are themselves orthogonal polynomials in λ. We explore several examples and demonstrate how our theory can be used for efficient evaluation of Sobolev-Fourier Coefficients
Enhancing Tc in field-doped Fullerenes by applying uniaxial stress
Capitalizing on the two-dimensional nature of superconductivity in
field-effect doped C60, we show that it should be possible to increase the
transition temperature Tc by applying uniaxial stress perpendicular to the gate
electrode. This method not only holds the promise of substantially enhancing Tc
(by about 30 K per GPa), but also provides a sensitive check of the current
understanding of superconductivity in the doped Fullerenes.Comment: 3 pages RevTe
Thermal Giant Graviton with Non-commutative Dipole Field
Using the type II near-extremal 3D-branes solution we apply the T-duality and
smeared twist to construct the supergravity backgrounds which dual to the 4D
finite temperature non-commutative dipole field theories. We first consider the
zero-temperature system in which, depending on the property of dipole vectors
it may be N=2, N=1 or N=0 theory. We investigate the rotating D3-brane
configurations moving on the spactimes and show that, for the cases of N=2 and
N =1 the rotating D3-brane could be blowed up to the stable spherical
configuration which is called as giant graviton and has a less energy than the
point-like graviton. The giant graviton configuration is stable only if its
angular momentum was less than a critical value of which is an increasing
function of the dipole strength. For the case of non-supersymmetric theory,
however, the spherical configuration has a larger energy than the point-like
graviton. We also find that the dipole field always render the dual giant
graviton to be more stable than the point-like graviton. The relation of dual
giant graviton energy with its angular momentum, which in the AdS/CFT
correspondence being the operator anomalous dimension is obtained. We
furthermore show that the temperature does not change the property of the giant

Marginal deformation of N=4 SYM and Penrose limits with continuum spectrum
We study the Penrose limit about a null geodesic with 3 equal angular momenta
in the recently obtained type IIB solution dual to an exactly marginal
-deformation of N=4 SYM. The resulting background has non-trivial NS
3-form flux as well as RR 5- and 3-form fluxes. We quantise the light-cone
Green-Schwarz action and show that it exhibits a continuum spectrum. We show
that this is related to the dynamics of a charged particle moving in a Landau
plane with an extra interaction induced by the deformation. We interpret the

Phosphorus supply affects seedling growth of mycorrhizal but not cluster-root forming jarrah-forest species
Aims
Fertiliser is often used to kick-start ecological restoration despite growing evidence of the potentially negative impacts on plant diversity. Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest species growing on nutrient (especially phosphorus) impoverished soils in southwestern Australia have a suite of adaptations for phosphorus (P) acquisition, including the formation of cluster roots, and associations with mycorrhizal fungi. Here we investigated how escalating P supply, along with a stoichiometric adjustment of nitrogen (N) supply, impacted the growth and nutrition of a wide range of jarrah forest seedlings.
Methods
In a pot experiment, we measured seedling biomass and nutritional responses of 12 jarrah forest species to a gradient of P supply in relation to N supply, and for the mycorrhizal species, inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
Results
Three cluster-root forming species did not respond to increasing P, probably because they were reliant on seed P. Generally, mycorrhizal species showed a positive biomass response to increasing P when N was available. Mycorrhizas benefited seedling growth at low P (9 mg P added per kg of jarrah forest soil) when N was also available, and were parasitic to seedling growth at high P (243 mg P/ kg soil) without additional N.
Conclusions
These results highlight importance of P and N supply in determining the nature of the symbiosis between plants and mycorrhizal fungi. Since P supply has the potential to reduce plant growth, for a range of species, our results suggest careful consideration of fertiliser amounts for ecological restoration of ecosystems adapted to nutrient poor soils
Giant Gravitons - with Strings Attached (III)
We develop techniques to compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of
operators in the super Yang-Mills theory that are dual to open
strings ending on boundstates of sphere giant gravitons. Our results, which are
applicable to excitations involving an arbitrary number of open strings,
generalize the single string results of hep-th/0701067. The open strings we
consider carry angular momentum on an S embedded in the S of the
AdSS background. The problem of computing the one loop anomalous
dimensions is replaced with the problem of diagonalizing an interacting Cuntz
oscillator Hamiltonian. Our Cuntz oscillator dynamics illustrates how the
Chan-Paton factors for open strings propagating on multiple branes can arise

Evaluation of non-chemical seed treatment methods for the control of Alternaria dauci and A. radicina on carrot seeds
The current study was initiated to evaluate the efficacy of physical methods (hot water, aerated steam, electron treatment) and agents of natural origin (resistance inducers, plant derived products, micro-organisms) as seed treatments of carrots for control of Alternaria dauci and A. radicina. Control of both Alternaria species by seed treatment with the resistance inducers was generally poor. Results were also not satisfactory with most of the formulated commercial micro-organism preparations. Based on the average of five field trials, one of these, BA 2552 (Pseudomonas chlororaphis), provided a low but significant increase in plant stand. Among the experimental micro-organisms, the best results were obtained with Pseudomonas sp. strain MF 416 and Clonostachys rosea strain IK726. A similar level of efficacy was provided by seed treatment with an emulsion (1%) of thyme oil in water. Good and consistent control was generally achieved with the physical methods aerated steam, hot water and electron treatment. Aerated steam treatment was, apart from the thiram-containing chemical standard, the best single treatment, and its performance may at least partially be due to extensive pre-testing, resulting in dosages optimally adapted to the respective seed lot. In some of the experiments the effect of the hot water treatment, which was tested at a fixed, not specifically adapted dosage, was significantly improved when combined with a Pseudomonas sp. MF 416 or C. rosea IK726 treatment. The results are discussed in relation to the outcome of experiments in which the same seed treatment methods and agents were tested in other seed-borne vegetable pathosystems
Non-holomorphic multi-matrix gauge invariant operators based on Brauer algebra
We present an orthogonal basis of gauge invariant operators constructed from
some complex matrices for the free matrix field, where operators are expressed
with the help of Brauer algebra. This is a generalisation of our previous work
for a signle complex matrix. We also discuss the matrix quantum mechanics
relevant to N=4 SYM on S^{3} times R. A commuting set of conserved operators
whose eigenstates are given by the orthogonal basis is shown by using enhanced

Universality of Nonperturbative Effects in c<1 Noncritical String Theory
Nonperturbative effects in c<1 noncritical string theory are studied using
the two-matrix model. Such effects are known to have the form fixed by the
string equations but the numerical coefficients have not been known so far.
Using the method proposed recently, we show that it is possible to determine
the coefficients for (p,q) string theory. We find that they are indeed finite
in the double scaling limit and universal in the sense that they do not depend
on the detailed structure of the potential of the two-matrix model.Comment: 17 page
