    ‘Race’ and inequality in postcolonial urban settings Examples from Peru, Jamaica, and Indonesia

    In this essay we present three case studies of Peru, Jamaica and Indonesia to illustrate the use of the concept of race in daily life in relation to labour, popular culture and beauty respectively. These cases demonstrate how the use of the concept of race changes in the transition from a colonial into a postcolonial setting, depending on the role of the state and nation building. In Peru, we see a clear continuation of racialized thinking; thinking and speaking in terms of ‘race’ is still the norm. In Jamaica we find a process of inversion: the concept of race is maintained as a frame of societal analysis, but blackness is revalidated and has become a prerequisite for national and cultural belonging. In Indonesia racialized categorizations have disappeared almost completely as ‘race’ has become subjected to the development rhetoric, which just allows limited space for ethnic manifestations.     Distributed Path Computation without Transient Loops: An Intermediate Variables Approach

    Paths with loops, even transient ones, pose significant stability problems in networks. As a result, much effort has been devoted over the past thirty years to designing distributed algorithms capable of avoiding loops. We present a new algorithm, Distributed path computation with Intermediate Variables (DIV), that guarantees that no loops, transient or steady-state, can ever form. DIV’s novelty is in that it is not restricted to shortest paths, can easily handle arbitrary sequences of changes and updates, and provably outperforms earlier approaches in several key metrics. In addition, when used with distance-vector style path computation algorithms, DIV also prevents counting-to-infinity; hence further improving convergence. The paper introduces DIV and its key properties. Simulation quantifying its performance gains are also presented

    From Tetraquark to Hexaquark: A Systematic Study of Heavy Exotics in the Large NcN_c Limit

    A systematic study of multiquark exotics with one or Nc−1N_c-1 heavy quarks in the large NcN_c limit is presented. By binding a chiral soliton to a heavy meson, either a normal NcN_c-quark baryon or an exotic (Nc+2)(N_c+2)-quark baryon is obtained. By replacing the heavy quark with Nc−1N_c-1 heavy antiquarks, exotic (2Nc−2)(2N_c-2)-quark and 2Nc2N_c-quark mesons are obtained. When Nc=3N_c = 3, they are just the normal triquark baryon QqqQqq, the exotic pentaquark baryon QqˉqˉqˉqˉQ\bar q\bar q\bar q\bar q, tetraquark di-meson QˉQˉqq\bar Q \bar Q qq and the hexaquark di-baryon QˉQˉqˉqˉ barqqˉ\bar Q \bar Q \bar q \bar q\ bar q \bar q respectively. Their stabilities and decays are also discussed. In particular, it is shown that the ``heavy to heavy'' semileptonic decays are described by the Isgur--Wise form factors of the normal baryons.Comment: 14 pages in REVTeX, no Figure

    Termination of the Phase of Quintessence by Gravitational Back-Reaction

    We study the effects of gravitational back-reaction in models of Quintessence. The effective energy-momentum tensor with which cosmological fluctuations back-react on the background metric will in some cases lead to a termination of the phase of acceleration. The fluctuations we make use of are the perturbations in our present Universe. Their amplitude is normalized by recent measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background, their slope is taken to be either scale-invariant, or characterized by a slightly blue tilt. In the latter case, we find that the back-reaction effect of fluctuations whose present wavelength is smaller than the Hubble radius but which are stretched beyond the Hubble radius by the accelerated expansion during the era of Quintessence domination can become large. Since the back-reaction effects of these modes oppose the acceleration, back-reaction will lead to a truncation of the period of Quintessence domination.     A brief review is first presented of attempts to predict stable multiquark states within current models of hadron spectroscopy.     Comments on the Quark Content of the Scalar Meson f0(1370)f_0(1370)

    Based on the measurements of (Ds+,D+)→f0(1370)π+(D_s^+,D^+)\to f_0(1370)\pi^+ we determine, in a model independent way, the allowed ssˉs\bar s content in the scalar meson f0(1370)f_0(1370). We find that, on the one hand, if this isoscalar resonance is a pure nnˉn\bar n state [ nnˉ≡(uuˉ+ddˉ)/2]n\bar n\equiv(u\bar u+d\bar d)/\sqrt{2} ], a very large WW-annihilation term will be needed to accommodate Ds+→f0(1370)π+D_s^+\to f_0(1370)\pi^+. On the other hand, the ssˉs\bar s component of f0(1370)f_0(1370) should be small enough to avoid excessive Ds+→f0(1370)π+D_s^+\to f_0(1370)\pi^+ induced from the external WW-emission. Measurement of f0(1370)f_0(1370) production in the decay Ds+→K+K−π+D_s^+\to K^+K^-\pi^+ will be useful to test the above picture. For the decay D0→f0(1370)Kˉ0D^0\to f_0(1370)\bar K^0 which is kinematically barely or even not allowed, depending on the mass of f0(1370)f_0(1370), we find that the finite width effect of f0(1370)f_0(1370) plays a crucial role on the resonant three-body decay D0→f0(1370)Kˉ0→π+π−Kˉ0D^0\to f_0(1370)\bar K^0\to\pi^+\pi^-\bar K^0.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
