Shape coexistence and the role of axial asymmetry in 72Ge

    Get PDF
The quadrupole collectivity of low-lying states and the anomalous behavior of the 02+ and 23+ levels in 72Ge are investigated via projectile multi-step Coulomb excitation with GRETINA and CHICO-2. A total of forty six E2 and M1 matrix elements connecting fourteen low-lying levels were determined using the least-squares search code, gosia. Evidence for triaxiality and shape coexistence, based on the model-independent shape invariants deduced from the Kumar-Cline sum rule, is presented. These are interpreted using a simple two-state mixing model as well as multi-state mixing calculations carried out within the framework of the triaxial rotor model. The results represent a significant milestone towards the understanding of the unusual structure of this nucleus

Triaxiality near the 110Ru ground state from Coulomb excitation

    Get PDF
A multi-step Coulomb excitation measurement with the GRETINA and CHICO2 detector arrays was carried out with a 430-MeV beam of the neutron-rich 110Ru (t1/2=12 s) isotope produced at the CARIBU facility. This represents the first successful measurement following the post-acceleration of an unstable isotope of a refractory element. The reduced transition probabilities obtained for levels near the ground state provide strong evidence for a triaxial shape; a conclusion confirmed by comparisons with the results of beyond-mean-field and triaxial rotor model calculations

A comparison of the community psychology and medical models: Teaching attitudes toward deviance to high school students

There is increased recognition of the importance of early intervention as part of a comprehensive system of community psychology. Moreover, emphasis on intervention at the system level is recommended to maximize effectiveness. However, in designing early intervention systemrelated programs, the content of the intervention is a critical, though often ignored, feature. This study compared a traditional medical model content with a community psychology-oriented content in teaching attitudes toward deviance to high school students. Results indicated that the significant changes in attitudes differed markedly between groups exposed to the divergent explanatory models, and that, in general, the community psychology model produced more favorable outcomes

Mental health attitudes of professionals in training

Attention focused on the attitudes of 140 psychology students toward the mentally ill and community care, on the dual assumptions (a) that relevant professional groups must share a basically humanistic and tolerant approach, and (b) that tertiary institutions have a significant role to play in the inculcation of such attitudes. It was demonstrated that the attitudes of second, third, and fourth year students were less authoritarian and more inclined toward mental health ideology than the attitudes of first year students. Comparisons were drawn between the present study and a recent investigation into the attitudes of secondary school students. Results were discussed within the framework of limitations imposed by the nature of the study and the implications for future research. 1977 Australian Psychological Societ
