Bottomonium Production at the Tevatron and the LHC
Inclusive bottomonium hadroproduction at the Tevatron is firstly examined in
a Monte Carlo framework with the colour-octet mechanism implemented in the
event generation. We extract some NRQCD colour-octet matrix elements relevant
for hadroproduction. Remarkably we find a quite small
contribution (compatible with zero) from feeddown of states
produced through the colour-octet mechanism: indirect production
via decays should be mainly ascribed to the colour-singlet model.
Finally we extrapolate to LHC energies to predict prompt
production rates.Comment: LaTeX, 11 pages, 6 EPS figure
Testing models with non-minimal Higgs sector through the decay t->q+WZ
We study the contribution of charged Higgs boson to the rare decay of the top
quark t->q+WZ (q=d,s,b) in models with Higgs sector that includes doublets and
triplets. Higgs doublets are needed to couple charged Higgs with quarks,
whereas the Higgs triplets are required to generate the non-standard vertex HWZ
at tree-level. It is found that within a model that respect the custodial SU(2)
symmetry and avoids flavour changing neutral currents by imposing discrete
symmetries, the decay mode t->b+WZ, can reach a branching ratio of order
0.0178, whereas the decay modes t->(d,s)+WZ, can reach a similar branching
ratio in models where flavour changing neutral currents are suppressed by
flavour symmetries.Comment: Typeset using REVTEX and EPSF, 5 pag, 2 figure
Can multi-TeV (top and other) squarks be natural in gauge mediation?
We investigate whether multi-TeV (1-3 TeV) squarks can be natural in models
of gauge mediated SUSY breaking. The idea is that for some boundary condition
of the scalar (Higgs and stop) masses, the Higgs (mass), evaluated at the
renormalization scale GeV, is not very sensitive to (boundary
values of) the scalar masses (this has been called ``focussing'' in recent
literature). Then, the stop masses can be multi-TeV without leading to
fine-tuning in electroweak symmetry breaking. {\em Minimal} gauge mediation
does {\em not} lead to this focussing (for all values of and the
messenger scale): the (boundary value of) the Higgs mass is too small compared
to the stop masses. Also, in minimal gauge mediation, the gaugino masses are of
the same order as the scalar masses so that multi-TeV scalars implies multi-TeV
gauginos (especially gluino) leading to fine-tuning. We discuss ideas to {\em
increase} the Higgs mass relative to the stop masses (so that focussing can be
achieved) and also to {\em suppress} gaugino masses relative to scalar masses
(or to modify the gaugino mass relations) in {\em non-minimal} models of gauge
mediation -- then multi-TeV (top and other) squarks can be natural. Specific
models of gauge mediation which incorporate these ideas and thus have squarks
(and in some cases, the gluino) heavier than a TeV without resulting in
fine-tuning are also studied and their collider signals are contrasted with
those of other models which have multi-TeV squarks.Comment: LaTeX, 29 pages, 9 eps figures. Replacing an earlier version. In

Limits on excited tau leptons masses from leptonic tau decays
We study the effects induced by excited leptons on the leptonic tau decay at
one loop level. Using a general effective lagrangian approach to describe the
couplings of the excited leptons, we compute their contributions to the
leptonic decays and use the current experimental values of the branching ratios
to put limits on the mass of excited states and the substructure scale.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
H-dibaryons and Primordial Nucleosynthesis
The apparent discrepancy between abundances of light nuclides predicted by
the standard Big-Bang and observational data is explained, by assuming the
presence of metastable H dibaryons at the nucleosynthesis era. These dibaryons
could be formed out of a small fraction of strange quarks at the moment of the
confinement transition. For a primordial deuterium abundance of the order of 3
10^{-5}, the measured differences in the 4He abundances requires a relative
abundance of H dibaryons of the order of n_H/n_B = 0.07, decaying in a
timescale of the order of 10^5 s.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, to appear in PR
The decay Z -> neutrino antineutrino photon in the Standard Model
A complete study of the one-loop induced decay Z -> neutrino antineutrino
photon is presented within the framework of the Standard Model. The advantages
of using a nonlinear gauge are stressed. We have found that the main
contributions come from the electric dipole and the magnetic dipole transitions
of the Z gauge boson and the neutrino, respectively. We obtain a branching
ratio B=7.16E-10, which is about four orders of magnitude smaller than the
bound recentely obtained by the L3 collaboration and thus it leaves open a
window to search for new physics effects in single-photon decays of the Z
boson.Comment: REVTEX,15 pp, 5 eps figures, Approved for publication in Physical

Effective String Theory of Vortices and Regge Trajectories
Starting from a field theory containing classical vortex solutions, we obtain
an effective string theory of these vortices as a path integral over the two
transverse degrees of freedom of the string. We carry out a semiclassical
expansion of this effective theory, and use it to obtain corrections to Regge
trajectories due to string fluctuations.Comment: 27 pages, revtex, 3 figures, corrected an error with the cutoff in

Estimating sigma-meson couplings from D \to 3\pi decays
Using recent experimental evidence from E791 on the sigma meson in D \to 3\pi
decays, we study the relevant couplings in D \to \sigma \pi and \sigma \to \pi\
pi within the accepted theoretical framework for non leptonic D decays. We also
review the linear sigma model, finding that it gives a description which is
consistent with the experimental data.Comment: 6 pages, no figures. Final version accepted for publication as a

Flavor changing single top quark production channels at e^+e^- colliders in the effective Lagrangian description
We perform a global analysis of the sensitivity of LEP2 and e^+e^- colliders
with a c.m. energy in the range 500 - 2000 GeV to new flavor-changing single
top quark production in the effective Lagrangian approach. The processes
considered are sensitive to new flavor-changing effective vertices such as Ztc,
htc, four-Fermi tcee contact terms as well as a right-handed Wtb coupling. We
show that e^+ e^- colliders are most sensitive to the physics responsible for
the contact tcee vertices. For example, it is found that the recent data from
the 189 GeV LEP2 run can be used to rule out any new flavor physics that can
generate these four-Fermi operators up to energy scales of \Lambda > 0.7 - 1.4
TeV, depending on the type of the four-Fermi interaction. We also show that a
corresponding limit of \Lambda > 1.3 - 2.5 and \Lambda > 17 - 27 TeV can be
reached at the future 200 GeV LEP2 run and a 1000 GeV e^+e^- collider,
respectively. We note that these limits are much stronger than the typical
limits which can be placed on flavor diagonal four-Fermi couplings. Similar
results hold for \mu^+\mu^- colliders and for tu(bar) associated production.
Finally we briefly comment on the necessity of measuring all flavor-changing
effective vertices as they can be produced by different types of heavy physics.Comment: 34 pages, plain latex, 7 figures embadded in the text using epsfig.

The NuTeV Anomaly, Neutrino Mixing, and a Heavy Higgs Boson
Recent results from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab and the deviation of the
Z invisible width, measured at LEP/SLC, from its Standard Model (SM) prediction
suggest the suppression of neutrino-Z couplings. Such suppressions occur
naturally in models which mix the neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states. We
postulate a universal suppression of the Z-nu-nu couplings by a factor of
(1-epsilon) and perform a fit to the Z-pole and NuTeV observables with epsilon
and the oblique correction parameters S and T. Compared to a fit with S and T
only, inclusion of epsilon leads to a dramatic improvement in the quality of
the fit. The values of S and T preferred by the fit can be obtained within the
SM by a simple increase in the Higgs boson mass. However, if the W mass is also
included in the fit, a non-zero U parameter becomes necessary which cannot be
supplied within the SM. The preferred value of epsilon suggests that the seesaw
mechanism may not be the reason why neutrinos are so light.Comment: 19 pages, REVTeX4, 8 postscript figures. Updated references. Typos
