Excitable media in open and closed chaotic flows
We investigate the response of an excitable medium to a localized
perturbation in the presence of a two-dimensional smooth chaotic flow. Two
distinct types of flows are numerically considered: open and closed. For both
of them three distinct regimes are found, depending on the relative strengths
of the stirring and the rate of the excitable reaction. In order to clarify and
understand the role of the many competing mechanisms present, simplified models
of the process are introduced. They are one-dimensional baker-map models for
the flow and a one-dimensional approximation for the transverse profile of the

ON COMPUTER SIMULATION AS A COMPONENT IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH
Computer simulation is widely regarded as a useful activity during various phases of research. However, depending on its context, the meaning, definition, and focus of the term can vary: In traffic planning, for example, simulation is used to determine useful configurations of a road network, thus focusing on the environment. An entirely different perspective is used within multi-agent systems. In such settings, the environment of the agents remains static, while the interesting research questions concern the behavior of the agents themselves. The research focuses on the microscopic level and the resulting emergent behavior. This article puts such diverse meanings in the context of a research process that treats descriptive and prescriptive research as two sides of the same coin. We develop a framework to classify different types of simulation, based on the actual research activity they are intended to be used for. Two case studies supplement the framework
Time ordering and counting statistics
The basic quantum mechanical relation between fluctuations of transported
charge and current correlators is discussed. It is found that, as a rule, the
correlators are to be time-ordered in an unusual way. Instances where the
difference with the conventional ordering matters are illustrated by means of a
simple scattering model. We apply the results to resolve a discrepancy
concerning the third cumulant of charge transport across a quantum point

Braid group statistics implies scattering in three-dimensional local quantum physics
It is shown that particles with braid group statistics (Plektons) in
three-dimensional space-time cannot be free, in a quite elementary sense: They
must exhibit elastic two-particle scattering into every solid angle, and at
every energy. This also implies that for such particles there cannot be any
operators localized in wedge regions which create only single particle states
from the vacuum and which are well-behaved under the space-time translations
(so-called temperate polarization-free generators). These results considerably
strengthen an earlier "NoGo-theorem for 'free' relativistic Anyons".
As a by-product we extend a fact which is well-known in quantum field theory
to the case of topological charges (i.e., charges localized in space-like
cones) in d>3, namely: If there is no elastic two-particle scattering into some
arbitrarily small open solid angle element, then the 2-particle S-matrix is

Linear Paul trap design for an optical clock with Coulomb crystals
We report on the design of a segmented linear Paul trap for optical clock
applications using trapped ion Coulomb crystals. For an optical clock with an
improved short-term stability and a fractional frequency uncertainty of 10^-18,
we propose 115In+ ions sympathetically cooled by 172Yb+. We discuss the
systematic frequency shifts of such a frequency standard. In particular, we
elaborate on high precision calculations of the electric radiofrequency field
of the ion trap using the finite element method. These calculations are used to
find a scalable design with minimized excess micromotion of the ions at a level
at which the corresponding second- order Doppler shift contributes less than
10^-18 to the relative uncertainty of the frequency standard
A-dependence of nuclear transparency in quasielastic A(e,e'p) at high Q^2
The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e,e'p) reaction has been studied at
SLAC with H-2, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q^2 = 1, 3, 5, and
6.8 (GeV/c)^2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A,Q^2), a measure of the
average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without
interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with
momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. No significant

After revisiting some high points of particle physics and QFT of the two
decades from 1960 to 1980, I comment on the work by Jorge Andre Swieca. I
explain how it fits into the quantum field theory during these two decades and
draw attention to its relevance to the ongoing particle physics research. A
particular aim of this article is to direct thr readers mindfulness to the
relevance of what at the time of Swieca was called "the Schwinger Higgs
screening mechanism". which, together with recent ideas which generalize the
concept of gauge theories, has all the ingredients to revolutionize the issue

Inclusive electron scattering from nuclei at x≃1
The inclusive A(e,e′) cross section for x≃1 was measured on 2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering
