Recoil and Threshold Corrections in Short-distance Cross Sections
We identify and resum corrections associated with the kinematic recoil of the
hard scattering against soft-gluon emission in single-particle inclusive cross
sections. The method avoids double counting and conserves the flow of partonic
energy. It reproduces threshold resummation for high-p_T single-particle cross
sections, when recoil is neglected, and Q_T-resummation at low Q_T, when
higher-order threshold logarithms are suppressed. We exhibit explicit resummed
cross sections, accurate to next-to-leading logarithm, for electroweak
annihilation and prompt photon inclusive cross sections.Comment: minor modifications of the text, some references added. 51 pages,

Slow dynamics and aging of a confined granular flow
We present experimental results on slow flow properties of a granular
assembly confined in a vertical column and driven upwards at a constant
velocity V. For monodisperse assemblies this study evidences at low velocities
() a stiffening behaviour i.e. the stress necessary to obtain
a steady sate velocity increases roughly logarithmically with velocity. On the
other hand, at very low driving velocity (), we evidence a
discontinuous and hysteretic transition to a stick-slip regime characterized by
a strong divergence of the maximal blockage force when the velocity goes to
zero. We show that all this phenomenology is strongly influenced by surrounding
humidity. We also present a tentative to establish a link between the granular
rheology and the solid friction forces between the wall and the grains. We base
our discussions on a simple theoretical model and independent grain/wall
tribology measurements. We also use finite elements numerical simulations to
confront experimental results to isotropic elasticity. A second system made of
polydisperse assemblies of glass beads is investigated. We emphasize the onset
of a new dynamical behavior, i.e. the large distribution of blockage forces
evidenced in the stick-slip regime
Vector boson production at hadron colliders: hard-collinear coefficients at the NNLO
We consider QCD radiative corrections to vector-boson production in hadron
collisions. We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) result of the
hard-collinear coefficient function for the all-order resummation of
logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momenta. The
coefficient function controls NNLO contributions in resummed calculations at
full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The same coefficient
function is used in applications of the subtraction method to perform

Model Independent Evolution of Transverse Momentum Dependent Distribution Functions (TMDs) at NNLL
We discuss the evolution of the eight leading twist transverse momentum
dependent parton distribution functions, which turns out to be universal and
spin independent. By using the highest order perturbatively calculable
ingredients at our disposal, we perform the resummation of the large logarithms
that appear in the evolution kernel of transverse momentum distributions up to
next-to-next-to-leading logarithms (NNLL), thus obtaining an expression for the
kernel with highly reduced model dependence. Our results can also be obtained
using the standard CSS approach when a particular choice of the
prescription is used. In this sense, and while restricted to the perturbative
domain of applicability, we consider our results as a "prediction" of the
correct value of which is very close to . We
explore under which kinematical conditions the effects of the non-perturbative
region are negligible, and hence the evolution of transverse momentum
distributions can be applied in a model independent way. The application of the
kernel is illustrated by considering the unpolarized transverse momentum

Differential Cross Section for Higgs Boson Production Including All-Orders Soft Gluon Resummation
The transverse momentum distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs
boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on
the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and
incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels.
Using an impact-parameter -space formalism, we include all-orders
resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our
resummed results merge smoothly at large with the fixed-order
expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no
need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with
respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input
at low . We provide distributions for Higgs boson masses
from to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity
grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range ~GeV. We provide analogous results
for boson production, for which we compute GeV. The
harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because
there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in

Joint resummation in electroweak boson production
We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism
to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This
formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large
threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact
parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation
procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section
for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly
in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine
the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement
these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse

A simple event weighting technique for optimizing the measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan dilepton pairs at hadron colliders
We describe a simple technique for optimizing the extraction of the
forward-backward asymmetry () of Drell-Yan lepton pairs (,) produced in and collisions at hadron colliders.
The method employs simple event weights which are functions of the rapidity and
decay angle of the lepton pair. It yields the best estimate of the
acceptance corrected parton level () forward backward asymmetry as a
function of final state dilepton mass (). Typically, when
compared to the simple count method, the technique reduces the statistical
errors by 20% for , and 40% for collisions, respectively. The
technique can be used to search for new high mass and large width Z' bosons
which may be best detected through the observation of deviations from the
Standard Model expectation for the forward-backward asymmetry. In addition, we

Tevatron Run-1 Z Boson Data and Collins-Soper-Sterman Resummation Formalism
We examine the effect of the Z-boson transverse momentum distribution
measured at the Run-1 of the Tevatron on the nonperturbative function of the
Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, which resums large logarithmic terms
from multiple soft gluon emission in hadron collisions. The inclusion of the
Tevatron Run-1 Z-boson data strongly favors a Gaussian form of the CSS
nonperturbative function, when combined with the other low energy Drell-Yan
