Right Hepatic Artery Pseudoaneurysm Thirteen Months Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

    Get PDF
A Hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare vascular complication of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We report a case that presented thirteen months following elective surgery and was treated successfully by endovascular coil embolisation. This case represents the latest presentation post surgery without the development of life threatening clinical rupture

Realistic simulations of single-spin nondemolition measurement by magnetic resonance force microscopy

A requirement for many quantum computation schemes is the ability to measure single spins. This paper examines one proposed scheme: magnetic resonance force microscopy, including the effects of thermal noise and back-action from monitoring. We derive a simplified equation using the adiabatic approximation, and produce a stochastic pure state unraveling which is useful for numerical simulations.Comment: 33 pages LaTeX, 9 figure files in EPS format. Entanglement of two-mode Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the entaglement characteristics of two general bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates - a pair of tunnel-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates and the atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate. We argue that the entanglement is only physically meaningful if the system is viewed as a bipartite system, where the subsystems are the two modes. The indistinguishibility of the particles in the condensate means that the atomic constituents are physically inaccessible and thus the degree of entanglement between individual particles, unlike the entanglement between the modes, is not experimentally relevant so long as the particles remain in the condensed state. We calculate the entanglement between the modes for the exact ground state of the two bimodal condensates and consider the dynamics of the entanglement in the tunnel-coupled case.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review A, to be presented at the third UQ Mathematical Physics workshop, Oct. 4-6; changes made in response to referee comment

Interference in a Spherical Phase-Space and Asymptotic-Behavior of the Rotation Matrices

    Get PDF
We extend the interference in the phase-space algorithm of Wheeler and Schleich [W. P. Schleich and J. A. Wheeler, Nature 326, 574 (1987)] to the case of a compact, spherical topology in order to discuss the large j limits of the angular momentum marginal probability distributions. These distributions are given in terms of the standard rotation matrices. It is shown that the asymptotic distributions are given very simply by areas of overlap in the classical spherical phase-space parametrized by the components of angular momentum. The results indicate the very general validity of the interference in phase-space concept for computing semiclassical limits in quantum mechanics

Experimental requirements for Grover's algorithm in optical quantum computation

The field of linear optical quantum computation (LOQC) will soon need a repertoire of experimental milestones. We make progress in this direction by describing several experiments based on Grover's algorithm. These experiments range from a relatively simple implementation using only a single non-scalable CNOT gate to the most complex, requiring two concatenated scalable CNOT gates, and thus form a useful set of early milestones for LOQC. We also give a complete description of basic LOQC using polarization-encoded qubits, making use of many simplifications to the original scheme of Knill, Laflamme, and Milburn.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Testing Broken U(1) Symmetry in a Two-Component Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present a scheme for determining if the quantum state of a small trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is a state with well defined number of atoms, a Fock state, or a state with a broken U(1) gauge symmetry, a coherent state. The proposal is based on the observation of Ramsey fringes. The population difference observed in a Ramsey fringe experiment will exhibit collapse and revivals due to the mean-field interactions. The collapse and revival times depend on the relative strength of the mean-field interactions for the two components and the initial quantum state of the condensate.Comment: 20 Pages RevTex, 3 Figure

Feedback-control of quantum systems using continuous state-estimation

We present a formulation of feedback in quantum systems in which the best estimates of the dynamical variables are obtained continuously from the measurement record, and fed back to control the system. We apply this method to the problem of cooling and confining a single quantum degree of freedom, and compare it to current schemes in which the measurement signal is fed back directly in the manner usually considered in existing treatments of quantum feedback. Direct feedback may be combined with feedback by estimation, and the resulting combination, performed on a linear system, is closely analogous to classical LQG control theory with residual feedback.Comment: 12 pages, multicol revtex, revised and extende

Single Spin Measurement using Single Electron Transistors to Probe Two Electron Systems

    Get PDF
We present a method for measuring single spins embedded in a solid by probing two electron systems with a single electron transistor (SET). Restrictions imposed by the Pauli Principle on allowed two electron states mean that the spin state of such systems has a profound impact on the orbital states (positions) of the electrons, a parameter which SET's are extremely well suited to measure. We focus on a particular system capable of being fabricated with current technology: a Te double donor in Si adjacent to a Si/SiO2 interface and lying directly beneath the SET island electrode, and we outline a measurement strategy capable of resolving single electron and nuclear spins in this system. We discuss the limitations of the measurement imposed by spin scattering arising from fluctuations emanating from the SET and from lattice phonons. We conclude that measurement of single spins, a necessary requirement for several proposed quantum computer architectures, is feasible in Si using this strategy.Comment: 22 Pages, 8 Figures; revised version contains updated references and small textual changes. Classical dynamics of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of nonlinear maser processes

The stability analysis of a generalized Dicke model, in the semi-classical limit, describing the interaction of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate driven by a quantized field in the presence of Kerr and spontaneous parametric processes is presented. The transitions from Rabi to Josephson dynamics are identified depending on the relative value of the involved parameters. Symmetry-breaking dynamics are shown for both types of coherent oscillations due to the quantized field and nonlinear optical processes.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Branching Fractions for D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi-, and a Search for CP Violation in D0 Decays

    Using the large hadroproduced charm sample collected in experiment E791 at Fermilab, we have measured ratios of branching fractions for the two-body singly-Cabibbo-suppressed charged decays of the D0: (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.109 +- 0.003 +- 0.003, (D0 -> pipi)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.040 +- 0.002 +- 0.003, and (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> pipi) = 2.75 +- 0.15 +- 0.16. We have looked for differences in the decay rates of D0 and D0bar to the CP eigenstates K+K- and pi+pi-, and have measured the CP asymmetry parameters A_CP(K+K-) = -0.010 +- 0.049 +- 0.012 and A_CP(pi+pi-) = -0.049 +- 0.078 +- 0.030, both consistent with zero.Comment: 10 Postscript pages, including 2 figures.
