    Fak, van Dijk and Wills (FDW) question our interpretation of elastic neutron-scattering experiments in the antiferromagnetic phase of UPt_3. They state that our analysis is incorrect because we average over magnetic structures that are disallowed by symmetry. We disagree with FDW and reply to their criticism. FDW also point out that we have mistaken the magnetic field direction in the experiment reported by N. H. van Dijk et al. [Phys. Rev. B 58, 3186 (1998)]. We correct this error and note that our previous conclusion is also valid for the correct field orientation.Comment: 3 page

    Potato processors discharge large volumes of wastewater that contain large amounts of organic matter, suspended solids, and various inorganic constituents including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (1, 2, 3). Until recently, the wastewater was discharged into rivers and streams, but governmental regulations now prohibit this practice. The potato processors must either treat their wastewater to meet established quality standards before discharging it into streams or find an alternative disposal method.     © 2020 The Author(s) Self-referential processing (i.e., self-schemas that guide processing of self-descriptive information) emerges early in youth, with deeper encoding of negative self-descriptors and/or shallower encoding of positive self-descriptors causally linked to depression. However, the relationship between depressogenic self-schemas and brain structure is unclear. We investigated associations between self-schemas and regional grey matter volume (GMV) in 84 never-depressed preadolescents oversampled for depression risk based on maternal depression history. Self-schemas were assessed using a Self-Referent Encoding Task (SRET) and regional GMV was indexed via voxel-based morphometry analysis of structural magnetic resonance imaging data. Youths’ positive self-schemas were associated with greater regional GMV within the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), while negative self-schemas were associated with smaller regional GMV within vlPFC and PCC, areas important to emotion regulation and self-referential processing. These associations remained significant after controlling for youths’ concurrent depressive symptoms. Exploratory mediation analysis suggested that adolescents’ depressogenic self-schemas may mediate associations between GMV and depressive symptoms. Our findings suggest that the observed GMV variations within vlPFC and PCC may serve as neurobiological markers of depressogenic self-schemas during preadolescence

    Treatment and Disposal of Potato Wastewater by Irrigation

    Irrigation with potato processing waste water was studied for 3 years at five locations in southern Idaho. Three of the potato processors surface irrigated and two sprinkled land planted to perennial grasses. The processing season began in October and continued into the following summer. Samples of 24-hour composited waste water and soil water, extracted from depths of 15 to 150 cm, were obtained monthly throughout the year. Analyses were made on all water samples of sufficient volume for chemical oxygen demand (COD), NO3 , total N, total P, ortho P, hydrolyzable P, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Cl, HCO3 , SO4 , electrical conductivity, and pH. Water applications ranged from 160 to 490 cm per year, total N from 1,000 to 2,200 kg, P from 150 to 630 kg, and K from 2,250 to 6,700 kg K/hectare year. COD decreased 95 to 100 percent after passage of the water through 150 cm of soil because of biological activity and filtration. Nitrates were low in one field with a shallow water table because of denitrification that resulted from low redox potentials. Phosphorus concentrations increased 50 to 100 parts per million in the surface 30 cm of soil but not measurably below that depth. K, Na, Ca, and Mg changed in proportion to the amounts applied in the waste water. Irrigation with potato processing waste water provides a means of utilizing part of the nutrients that. would otherwise be wasted and solves a difficult environmental pollution problem

    There have long been concerns about the use of physical restraint in residential care. This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study which explores the experiences of children, young people and residential workers about physical restraint. The research identifies the dilemmas and ambiguities for both staff and young people, and participants discuss the situations where they feel physical restraint is appropriate as well as their concerns about unjustified or painful restraints. They describe the negative emotions involved in restraint but also those situations where, through positive relationships and trust, restraint can help young people through unsafe situations

    Antiferromagnetic Domains and Superconductivity in UPt3

    We explore the response of an unconventional superconductor to spatially inhomogeneous antiferromagnetism (SIAFM). Symmetry allows the superconducting order parameter in the E-representation models for UPt3 to couple directly to the AFM order parameter. The Ginzburg-Landau equations for coupled superconductivity and SIAFM are solved numerically for two possible SIAFM configurations: (I) abutting antiferromagnetic domains of uniform size, and (II) quenched random disorder of `nanodomains' in a uniform AFM background. We discuss the contributions to the free energy, specific heat, and order parameter for these models. Neither model provides a satisfactory account of experiment, but results from the two models differ significantly. Our results demonstrate that the response of an E_{2u} superconductor to SIAFM is strongly dependent on the spatial dependence of AFM order; no conclusion can be drawn regarding the compatibility of E_{2u} superconductivity with UPt3 that is independent of assumptions on the spatial dependence of AFMComment: 12 pages, 13 figures, to appear in Phys.     Magnetic Order in YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} Superconductors

    Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction has been used to search for magnetic order in YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} superconductors. Most of the measurements were made on a high quality crystal of YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.6_{6.6}. It is shown that this crystal has highly ordered ortho-II chain order, and a sharp superconducting transition. Inelastic scattering measurements display a very clean spin-gap and pseudogap with any intensity at 10 meV being 50 times smaller than the resonance intensity. The crystal shows a complicated magnetic order that appears to have three components. A magnetic phase is found at high temperatures that seems to stem from an impurity with a moment that is in the aa-bb plane, but disordered on the crystal lattice. A second ordering occurs near the pseudogap temperature that has a shorter correlation length than the high temperature phase and a moment direction that is at least partly along the c-axis of the crystal. Its moment direction, temperature dependence, and Bragg intensities suggest that it may stem from orbital ordering of the dd-density wave (DDW) type. An additional intensity increase occurs below the superconducting transition. The magnetic intensity in these phases does not change noticeably in a 7 Tesla magnetic field aligned approximately along the c-axis. Searches for magnetic order in YBa2_2Cu3_3O7_{7} show no signal while a small magnetic intensity is found in YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.45_{6.45} that is consistent with c-axis directed magnetic order.     We discuss possible magnetic structures in UPt3_3 based on our analysis of elastic neutron-scattering experiments in high magnetic fields at temperatures T<TNT<T_N. The existing experimental data can be explained by a single-{\bf q} antiferromagnetic structure with three independent domains. For modest in-plane spin-orbit interactions, the Zeeman coupling between the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the magnetic field induces a rotation of the magnetic moments, but not an adjustment of the propagation vector of the magnetic order. A triple-{\bf q} magnetic structure is also consistent with neutron experiments, but in general leads to a non-uniform magnetization in the crystal.     Ab initio Quantum and ab initio Molecular Dynamics of the Dissociative Adsorption of Hydrogen on Pd(100)

    The dissociative adsorption of hydrogen on Pd(100) has been studied by ab initio quantum dynamics and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. Treating all hydrogen degrees of freedom as dynamical coordinates implies a high dimensionality and requires statistical averages over thousands of trajectories. An efficient and accurate treatment of such extensive statistics is achieved in two steps: In a first step we evaluate the ab initio potential energy surface (PES) and determine an analytical representation. Then, in an independent second step dynamical calculations are performed on the analytical representation of the PES. Thus the dissociation dynamics is investigated without any crucial assumption except for the Born-Oppenheimer approximation which is anyhow employed when density-functional theory calculations are performed. The ab initio molecular dynamics is compared to detailed quantum dynamical calculations on exactly the same ab initio PES. The occurence of quantum oscillations in the sticking probability as a function of kinetic energy is addressed. They turn out to be very sensitive to the symmetry of the initial conditions. At low kinetic energies sticking is dominated by the steering effect which is illustrated using classical trajectories. The steering effects depends on the kinetic energy, but not on the mass of the molecules. Zero-point effects lead to strong differences between quantum and classical calculations of the sticking probability. The dependence of the sticking probability on the angle of incidence is analysed; it is found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The results show that the determination of the potential energy surface combined with high-dimensional dynamical calculations, in which all relevant degrees of freedon are taken into account, leads to a detailed understanding of the dissociation dynamics of hydrogen at a transition metal surface.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, subm. to Phys.     Spin fluctuations in nearly magnetic metals from ab-initio dynamical spin susceptibility calculations:application to Pd and Cr95V5

    We describe our theoretical formalism and computational scheme for making ab-initio calculations of the dynamic paramagnetic spin susceptibilities of metals and alloys at finite temperatures. Its basis is Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory within an electronic multiple scattering, imaginary time Green function formalism. Results receive a natural interpretation in terms of overdamped oscillator systems making them suitable for incorporation into spin fluctuation theories. For illustration we apply our method to the nearly ferromagnetic metal Pd and the nearly antiferromagnetic chromium alloy Cr95V5. We compare and contrast the spin dynamics of these two metals and in each case identify those fluctuations with relaxation times much longer than typical electronic `hopping times'Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures.
