WELFARE IMPLICATIONS OF THE WOOL ACT
A model of the U.S. sheep industry is estimated and simulated to determine the impact of the wool incentive program on actors in U.S. sheep product markets. The simulation analysis indicates that U.S. sheep producers and lamb and wool consumers are the programÂ’s gainers while lamb and wool exporters and taxpayers are its losers. Net societal losses averaged $26.4 million per year during the 1980-85 period, considering U.S. as well as exporter interests. This loss is about 2.5% of average U.S. consumer expenditures on lamb and wool over the period.Agricultural and Food Policy, Livestock Production/Industries,
Claim your online scholarly presence: ORCiD
Presented as a Small Group/Roundtable Discussion at 2020 IUSM Education Day.Claiming, maintaining, and tracking research output is crucial to a researcher’s continued visibility and impact. Tracking scholarly output and cultivating information about a researcher's work is made possible with online scholarly profile tools. As the most widely accepted unique identifier for authors, ORCiD IDs are increasingly required for: paper submissions to journals, grant submissions, and various NIH research training and career development awards. Attendees participated in hands on activities to set up profiles, and discover more information about tracking their impact going forward, and utilize existing connections between different scholarly profile tools. Learning objectives: • List reasons why maintaining scholarly profiles is important to researchers • Describe the benefits of several scholarly profile tools • Set up and/or update your scholarly profile(s
REVEALED COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE AND THE MEASUREMENT OF INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS FOR AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF WOOL EXPORTERS
Trade liberalization and laissez-faire economics are altering the structure of agricultural production and trade. The principle of comparative advantage, a classic tenet of economics, is a useful tool for understanding the future of world agriculture. This study employs a "Revealed Comparative Advantage" approach to investigate patterns of comparative advantage among six major wool exporting countries.International Relations/Trade,

Resource targets for advanced underground coal extraction systems
Resource targets appropriate for federal sponsorship of research and development of advanced underground coal mining systems are identified. A comprehensive examination of conventional and unconventional coals with particular attention to exceptionally thin and thick seams, steeply dipping beds, and multiple seam geometry was made. The results indicate that the resource of primary importance is flat lying bituminous coal of moderate thickness, under moderate cover, and located within the lower 48 states. Resources of secondary importance are the flat lying multiple seams and thin seams (especially those in Appalachia). Steeply dipping coals, abandoned pillars, and exceptionally thick western coals may be important in some regions of subregions, but the limited tonnage available places them in a position of tertiary importance
SUPPLY CHAIN INTEGRATION IN THE FOOD AND CONSUMER GOODS INDUSTRIES
The interorganizational structures necessary to implement and achieve the logistical performance improvements identified in the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) initiative and related supply chain management concepts are difficult to develop. Firms continue to struggle to implement integrated programs and techniques, particularly with respect to changing operating structures, relationships, and mindsets to facilitate true supply chain integration. This research explores the logistical strategies and structures used by selected food and consumer goods firms to integrate their supply chains. It illustrates effective integration strategies and identifies critical success factors and barriers to successful ECR implementation. A framework is used to guide managers in developing the competencies essential to integrating the supply chain and to establishing the relationships necessary to operate in an ECR environment. The framework, entitled Supply Chain 2000, depicts supply chain value creation as achieving synchronization and coordination across four critical supply chain flows: product/service; market accommodation; information; and cash.Industrial Organization,
IMPACT OF CHANGING CONSUMER PREFERENCES ON WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR BEEF STEAKS IN ALTERNATIVE RETAIL PACKAGING
The purpose of this study was to identify how consumer perceptions of selected attributes of beef steaks, individual consumer demographics and perceived changes in purchases of substitute meats affect willingness-to-pay for beef rib-eye steaks in the traditional overwrapped styrofoam tray and vacuum skin packages. A laboratory auction was used to obtain willingness-to-pay data. The results suggest that health related factors, particularly the concern regarding cholesterol, reduced the willingness-to-pay for beef rib-eye steaks, regardless of package type. For the vacuum skin package to be successful, information about the package is necessary, along with providing a consistent and quality product, particularly with respect to trim.Consumer/Household Economics,

Antecedents of support for social media content moderation and platform regulation: the role of presumed effects on self and others
This study examines support for regulation of and by platforms and provides insights into public perceptions of platform governance. While much of the public discourse surrounding platforms evolves at a policy level between think tanks, journalists, academics and political actors, little attention is paid to how people think about regulation of and by platforms. Through a representative survey study of US internet users (N = 1,022), we explore antecedents of support for social media content moderation by platforms, as well as for regulation of social media platforms by the government. We connect these findings to presumed effects on self (PME1) and others (PME3), concepts that lie at the core of third-person effect (TPE) and influence of presumed influence (IPI) scholarship. We identify third-person perceptions for social media content: Perceived negative effects are stronger for others than for oneself. A first-person perception operates on the platform level: The beneficial effects of social media platforms are perceived to be stronger for the self than for society. At the behavioral level, we identify age, education, opposition to censorship, and perceived negative effects of social media content on others (PME3) as significant predictors of support for content moderation. Concerning support for regulation of platforms by the government, we find significant effects of opposition to censorship, perceived intentional censorship, frequency of social media use, and trust in platforms. We argue that stakeholders involved in platform governance must take more seriously the attitudes of their constituents
Working Group 5: Measurements technology and active experiments
Technology issues identified by working groups 5 are listed. (1) New instruments are needed to upgrade the ability to measure plasma properties in space. (2) Facilities should be developed for conducting a broad range of plasma experiments in space. (3) The ability to predict plasma weather within magnetospheres should be improved and a capability to modify plasma weather developed. (4) Methods of control of plasma spacecraft and spacecraft plasma interference should be upgraded. (5) The space station laboratory facilities should be designed with attention to problems of flexibility to allow for future growth. These issues are discussed
A mathematical approach to clinical usage of ellipsoidal contact lenses
This paper presents a mathematical model by which successful ellipsoidal back surface hard contact lenses can be predicted. By treating the corneal surface as being ellipsoidal in nature, the amount of lens standoff along the anterior-posterior axis was calculated in both the vertical and horizontal meridians, and for an average of the two meridians. The vertical standoff data showed a grouping of the successful lenses that was statistically significant at the .005 level of confidence. Neither the horizontal nor the average standoff data showed groupings that were statistically significant
