    Law School Education in the 21st Century: Adding Information Technology Instruction to the Curriculum

    For the past 120 years, legal education in the United States has been fundamentally unchanged, even while the practice of law has been revolutionized by information technology. The ideal of the Socratic Method is still dominant in first year and many upperclass courses. Clinical and practice courses have expanded since the early-1980s; however, although state-of-the-art technology is now commonplace in law offices, most federal courthouses, and some state courtrooms, until now, there has been little effort to contextualize the importance of technology for law students. The authors review the availability of courses covering use of technology in law practice at American law schools and set out their own proposal for such a course at Duke University School of Law

    Ablation of silicate particles in high-speed continuum and transition flow with application to the collection of interplanetary dust particles

    A model for the ablation and deceleration of spheres in continuum and slip flow is presented. Experiments were conducted in which initially spherical 7.1 micron diameter soda-lime glass particles were launched from vacuum at ~4500 m s^(-1) through a 0.5 mil (13 micron) plastic film into a capture chamber containing xenon at 0.1 and 0.2 atm and 295 K. Samples of ablated particles were collected and inspected using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the ratio of the ablated particle radius (R_f) to the initial radius (R_0) depends on the gas pressure such that at 0.1 atm, R_f/R_0 = 0.67 ± 0.08, and at 0.2 atm, R_f/R_0 = 0.88 ± 0.08. The model agrees with these results if the heat of ablation Q is set to 1.5 ± 0.2 MJ kg^(-1). This value of Q approximately corresponds to the energy needed to raise the particle temperature from 295 to 1300 K, the working point of soda-lime glass. This indicates that the mechanism of ablation is melting and blowing of material from the particle's surface

    The frequency of epstein-barr virus infection and associated lymphoproliferative syndrome after transplantation and its manifestations in children

    Twenty cases of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated lymphoproliferative syndrome (LPS), defined by the presence of EBV nuclear antigen and/or EBV DNA in tissues, were diagnosed in 1467 transplant recipients in Pittsburgh from 1981—1985. The frequency of occurrence in pediatric transplant recipients was 4% (10/ 253), while in adults it was 0.8% (10/1214) (P < .0005). The frequency of LPS in adults declined after 1983 coincidental with the introduction of cyclosporine monitoring. However there was no apparent decline of LPS in children. We describe these ten pediatric cases and one additional case of LPS in a child who received her transplant before 1981. The frequency of EBV infection in 92 pediatric liver recipients was 63%. Of these subjects, 49% were sero-negative and 77% of those acquired primary infection. Of 11 cases of pediatric EBV-associated LPS, 10 were in children who had primary infection shortly before or after transplantation. These results reinforce the impor-tance of primary EBV infection in producing LPS, which was previously shown in adults. Children are at greater risk because they are more likely to be seronegative for EBV and to acquire primary infection. Three clinical types of LPS were recognized in children. The first (5 cases) was a self-limited mononucleo-sislike syndrome. The second syndrome (4 cases) began similarly, but then progressed over the next two months to widespread lymphoproliferation in internal organs and death.     Ages of the Whitewater and Fairhaven tills in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana

    Alloisoleucine/isoleucine (aIle/Ile) ratios obtained from fossil mollusc shells collected at localities in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana, where they occur in silt beds associated with the Whitewater and Fairhaven tills, indicate a pre-Wisconsinan age for these tills, which had previously been thought to be early or middle Wisconsinan. The aIle/Ile ratios in shells from beneath the buried soil (Sidney soil) and till exposed near Sidney, Ohio, are most similar to values in shells obtained from Illinoian sediments at Clough Creek in Hamilton County, Ohio; Mechanicsburg southwest, Illinois; and Trousdale Mine in Vermillion Co., Indiana. The first well-developed weathering profile in the sequence above the implied Illinoian age silt at the Sidney cut, therefore, probably represents Sangamonian, early and middle Wisconsinan weathering. Molluscs from an organic silt, exposed near the base of the Bantas Fork cutbank section, also have aIle/Ile ratios that are similar to those measured in shell recovered from the silt at the Sidney cut and from the silt inclusion in inferred Illinoian till at Clough Creek. These data indicate that the organic silt is pre-Wisconsinan. Therefore, the Fairhaven Till, which overlies the silt at the Bantas Fork locality, could be pre-Wisconsinan and the weathering profile developed in the Fairhaven Till may be correlative with the Sangamon Soil of Illinois. The New Paris Interstade silt overlies Whitewater Till at the American Aggregates quarry at Richmond, Indiana. Shells from the silt have aIle/Ile ratios that are intermediate between those obtained from inferred Illinoian age sediments at Bantas Fork, Sidney cut, and Clough Creek, and magnetically reversed sediments at Handley Farm, near Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana. These data suggest a pre-Illinoian age for the silt unit and the underlying Whitewater Till

    Observations of dislocations in zinc by chemical etching

    A new chemical etch has been found to be effective for revealing dislocations intersecting the basal planes of zinc. The etch works for surface whose orientation is within 0.5° of the basal plane. Evidence is available that there is a one-to-one correspondence between etch figures and dislocations. Crystals with densities as high as 10^7 dislocations per cm^2 have been successfully etched

    Incorporating Acupuncture Into American Healthcare: Initiating a Discussion on Implementation Science, the Status of the Field, and Stakeholder Considerations

    Introduction: The field of implementation science is the study of methods that promote the uptake of evidence-based interventions into healthcare policy and practice. While acupuncture has gained significant traction in the American healthcare landscape, its journey has been somewhat haphazard and non-linear. Methods: In June 2019, a group of thirty diverse stakeholders was convened by the Society for Acupuncture Research with the support of a Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, Eugene Washington Engagement Award. This group of stakeholders represented a diverse mix of patients, providers, academicians, researchers, funders, allied health professionals, insurers, association leaders, certification experts, and military program developers. The collective engaged in discussion that explored acupuncture\u27s status in healthcare, including reflections on its safety, effectiveness, best practices, and the actual implementation of acupuncture as seen from diverse stakeholder viewpoints. Objectives: A primary goal was to consider how to utilize knowledge from the field of implementation science more systematically and intentionally to disseminate information about acupuncture and its research base, through application of methods known to implementation science. The group also considered novel challenges that acupuncture may present to known implementation processes. Findings: This article summarizes the initial findings of this in-person meeting of stakeholders and the ongoing discussion among the subject matter experts who authored this report. The goal of this report is to catalyze greater conversation about how the field of implementation science might intersect with practice, access, research, and policymaking pertaining to acupuncture. Core concepts of implementation science and its relationship to acupuncture are introduced, and the case for acupuncture as an Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is established. The status of the field and current environment of acupuncture is examined, and the perspectives of four stakeholder groups--patients, two types of professional practitioners, and researchers--are explored in more detail
