Advanced sensitive measurement techniques used in the prediction method are described. These include: neutron activation analysis, radioactive tracer technique, and atomic absorption spectroscopy with a graphite tube furnace sampler.     A Geometrical Test of the Cosmological Energy Contents Using the Lyman-alpha Forest

    In this Letter we explore a version of the test of cosmological geometry proposed by Alcock and Paczynski (1979), using observations of the Lyman-alpha forest in the spectra of close quasar pairs. By comparing the correlations in absorption in one quasar spectrum with correlations between the spectra of neighboring quasars one can determine the relation of the redshift distance scale to the angle distance scale at the redshift of the absorbers, z24z \sim 2 - 4. Since this relationship depends on the parameters of the cosmological model, these parameters may be determined using the Lyman-alpha forest. While this test is relatively insensitive to the density parameter Ωm\Omega_m in a dust-dominated universe, it is more sensitive to the presence of a matter component with large negative pressure (such as a cosmological constant Λ\Lambda) and its equation of state. With only 25 pairs of quasar spectra at angular separations 0.520.5' - 2', one can discriminate between an Ωm=0.3\Omega_m = 0.3 open universe (Λ=0\Lambda=0) and an Ωm=0.3\Omega_m = 0.3 flat (Λ\Lambda-dominated) universe at the 4σ4-\sigma level. The S/N can be enhanced by considering quasar pairs at smaller angular separations, but requires proper modeling of nonlinear redshift space distortions.     Shuttle-launch triangular space station

    A triangular space station deployable in orbit is described. The framework is comprized of three trusses, formed of a pair of generally planar faces consistine of foldable struts. The struts expand and lock into rigid structural engagement forming a repetition of equilater triangles and nonfolding diagonal struts interconnecting the two faces. The struts are joined together by node fittings. The framework can be packaged into a size and configuration transportable by a space shuttle. When deployed, the framework provides a large work/construction area and ample planar surface area for solar panels and thermal radiators. A plurity of modules are secured to the framework and then joined by tunnels to make an interconnected modular display. Thruster units for the space station orientation and altitude maintenance are provided

    Global-String and Vortex Superfluids in a Supersymmetric Scenario

    The main goal of this work is to investigate the possibility of finding the supersymmetric version of the U(1)-global string model which behaves as a vortex-superfluid. To describe the superfluid phase, we introduce a Lorentz-symmetry breaking background that, in an approach based on supersymmetry, leads to a discussion on the relation between the violation of Lorentz symmetry and explicit soft supersymmetry breakings. We also study the relation between the string configuration and the vortex-superfluid phase. In the framework we settle down in terms of superspace and superfields, we actually establish a duality between the vortex degrees of freedom and the component fields of the Kalb-Ramond superfield. We make also considerations about the fermionic excitations that may appear in connection with the vortex formation.Comment: 9 pages.     The construction of identities in narratives about serious leisure occupations

    Engagement in occupation contributes to the shaping of identity throughout the human life. The act of telling about such engagement involves interaction based on symbolic meaning; the speaker constructing an identity by conveying how the occupation is personally meaningful. This study explored meaning in narratives told by people who engage in serious leisure occupations. A total of 78 narratives were extracted from interviews with 17 people who invest considerable time and other resources into their leisure. Analysis focused on the content, structure and performance of each narrative in order to explore meaning. The meanings were organised into a framework based around three dimensions: the located self, the active self and the changing self. Each dimension has facets that the individual might emphasise, constructing a unique identity. The framework offers a structured basis for conceptualising how occupation contributes to the shaping of the internalised self and the socially situated identity

    Characterization of disturbance sources for LISA: torsion pendulum results

    A torsion pendulum allows ground-based investigation of the purity of free-fall for the LISA test masses inside their capacitive position sensor. This paper presents recent improvements in our torsion pendulum facility that have both increased the pendulum sensitivity and allowed detailed characterization of several important sources of acceleration noise for the LISA test masses. We discuss here an improved upper limit on random force noise originating in the sensor. Additionally, we present new measurement techniques and preliminary results for characterizing the forces caused by the sensor's residual electrostatic fields, dielectric losses, residual spring-like coupling, and temperature gradients.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication Classical and Quantum Gravit

    Gravitational radiation observations on the moon

    A Laser‐Interferometer Gravitational‐Wave Observatory (LIGO) is planned for operation in the United States, with two antennas separated by several thousand kilometers. Each antenna would incorporate laser interferometers with 4 km arm lengths, operating in vacuum. The frequency range covered initially would be from a few tens of Hz to a few kHz, with possible extension to lower frequencies later. Similar systems are likely to be constructed in Europe, and there is a possibility of at least one system in Asia or Australia. It will be possible to determine the direction to a gravitational wave source by measuring the difference in the arrival times at the various antennas for burst signals or the phase difference for short duration nearly periodic signals. The addition of an antenna on the Moon, operating in support of the Earth‐based antennas, would improve the angular resolution for burst signals by about a factor 50 in the plane containing the source, the Moon, and the Earth. This would be of major importance in studies of gravitational wave sources. There is also a possibility of somewhat lower noise at frequencies near 1 Hz for a lunar gravitational wave antenna, because of lower gravity gradient noise and microseismic noise on the Moon. However, for frequencies near 0.1 Hz and below, a 10^7 km laser gravitational wave antenna in solar orbit would be much more sensitive

    Polyploid speciation entails substantial and rapid postzygotic reproductive isolation of nascent species that are initially sympatric with one or both parents. Despite strong postzygotic isolation, ecological niche differentiation has long been thought to be important for polyploid success. Using biogeographic data from across vascular plants, we tested whether the climatic niches of polyploid species are more differentiated than their diploid relatives and if the climatic niches of polyploid species differentiated faster than those of related diploids. We found that polyploids are often more climatically differentiated from their diploid parents than the diploids are from each other. Consistent with this pattern, we estimated that polyploid species generally have higher rates of multivariate niche differentiation than their diploid relatives.
