Gravitational wave searches using the DSN (Deep Space Network)
The Deep Space Network Doppler spacecraft link is currently the only method available for broadband gravitational wave searches in the 0.01 to 0.001 Hz frequency range. The DSN's role in the worldwide search for gravitational waves is described by first summarizing from the literature current theoretical estimates of gravitational wave strengths and time scales from various astrophysical sources. Current and future detection schemes for ground based and space based detectors are then discussed. Past, present, and future planned or proposed gravitational wave experiments using DSN Doppler tracking are described. Lastly, some major technical challenges to improve gravitational wave sensitivities using the DSN are discussed
The Endowment Effect in a Public Good Experiment
Previous tests of the endowment effect have usually observed WTA-WTP disparities. Here, a public good experiment is employed. Both account framing and duration framing treatments are introduced to alter subjects’ perceived control over an initial endowment. Results do not indicate that preferences shift in a way consistent with the endowment effect.endowment effect, public good, willingness to pay

Towards an understanding of nanometric dielectrics
Dielectric studies are described aimed at providing an understanding of the charge storage and transport of an epoxy resin containing TiO2 nanoparticles. Comparative results for conventionally filled composites are given, and the results discussed in terms of the underlying physics. It is shown that nanometric fillers mitigate the interfacial polarization characteristic of conventional materials with a reduction in the internal field accumulations
Optical fiber coupling method and apparatus
Systems are described for coupling a pair of optical fibers to pass light between them, which enables a coupler to be easily made, and with simple equipment, while closely controlling the characteristics of the coupler. One method includes mounting a pair of optical fibers on a block having a large hole therein, so the fibers extend across the hole while lying adjacent and parallel to one another. The fibers are immersed in an etchant to reduce the thickness of cladding around the fiber core. The fibers are joined together by applying a liquid polymer so the polymer-air interface moves along the length of the fibers to bring the fibers together in a zipper-like manner, and to progressively lay a thin coating of the polymer on the fibers
Development of Heterogeneous Photosensitized Transition Metal Oxide Water-Splitting Catalysts on Silica Support
The research presented in this manuscript describes the development of photosensitized inexpensive catalysts based on readily available materials. The investigation covers synthesis and characterization of photosensitizers based on porphyrins, mechanical and thermal coating of solid support with semiconducting transition metal oxides, photosensitization of the semiconducting layer, and characterization of the photoelectrochemical properties displayed by the new materials. The process of water oxidation is of primary interest here, with little emphasis put on reduction of protons to gaseous hydrogen. Photoelectrochemically produced protons serve as a probe of effectiveness of the catalysts. Several systems are described, and two catalysts are identified as the most efficient
Phenomenology of loop quantum cosmology
After introducing the basic ingredients of Loop Quantum Cosmology, I will
briefly discuss some of its phenomenological aspects. Those can give some
useful insight about the full Loop Quantum Gravity theory and provide an answer
to some long-standing questions in early universe cosmology.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures; Invited talk in the First Mediterranean

A new record of Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) on the North Island, New Zealand
The filamentous green alga Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) was recorded for the first time on the North Island of New Zealand at mokoroa Estuary, Tauranga Harbour. This species is previously known within New Zealand from only two records, both from the South Island. In Tauranga Harbour, this species was restricted to anoxic estuarine sediments where mangrove forests had been mulched, and mulchate left in situ. Percursaria percursa was found intertwined with Ulva spp. and Rhizoclonium spp. Surveys of other North and South Island estuaries suggest that this alga, although occurring as part of nuisance green algal blooms in Tauranga Harbour, has only colonized human-impacted locations, and has not yet been observed in natural' estuarine ecosystems in New Zealand. As this species was found intertwined with other mat-forming filamentous green algae, it can easily be misidentified in the field, leading to both over- and under-reporting of species occurrence
Enhanced backscatter of optical beams reflected in turbulent air
Optical beams propagating through air acquire phase distortions from
turbulent fluctuations in the refractive index. While these distortions are
usually deleterious to propagation, beams reflected in a turbulent medium can
undergo a local recovery of spatial coherence and intensity enhancement
referred to as enhanced backscatter (EBS). Using a combination of lab-scale
experiments and simulations, we investigate the EBS of optical beams reflected
from corner cubes and rough surfaces, and identify the regimes in which EBS is
most distinctly observed.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
