Latest results from the PHOBOS experiment
Over the past years PHOBOS has continued to analyze the large datasets
obtained from the first five runs of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)
at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The two main analysis streams have been
pursued. The first one aims to obtain a broad and systematic survey of global
properties of particle production in heavy ion collisions. The second class
includes the study of fluctuations and correlations in particle production.
Both type of studies have been performed for a variety of the collision
systems, covering a wide range in collision energy and centrality. The uniquely
large angular coverage of the PHOBOS detector and its ability to measure
charged particles down to very low transverse momentum is exploited. The latest
physics results from PHOBOS, as presented at Quark Matter 2008 Conference, are

The relationship between intercultural teaching competence and school and classroom level characteristics
The increasing levels of diversity in primary education make it essential to identify factors that influence Intercultural Teaching Competence (ITC). This study investigates which factors of Educational Effectiveness Research contribute to five dimensions of ITC: openness, classroom management, enriched lesson design, social initiative, and storytelling. Therewith, it contributes to the literature of both fields. Data collected through a cross-sectional survey among 155 Dutch primary school teachers were examined with linear regression analyses. The results showed that some characteristics at the classroom level have a strong significant relationship with dimensions of Intercultural Teaching Competence, whereas school characteristics did not
Harmonic lattice behavior of two-dimensional colloidal crystals
Using positional data from video-microscopy and applying the equipartition
theorem for harmonic Hamiltonians, we determine the wave-vector-dependent
normal mode spring constants of a two-dimensional colloidal model crystal and
compare the measured band-structure to predictions of the harmonic lattice
theory. We find good agreement for both the transversal and the longitudinal
mode. For , the measured spring constants are consistent with the

The in-medium isovector pi N amplitude from low energy pion scattering
Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV positive and
negative pions by Si, Ca, Ni and Zr have been measured as part of a study of
the pion-nucleus potential across threshold. The `anomalous' repulsion in the
s-wave term was observed, as is the case with pionic atoms. The extra repulsion
can be accounted for by a chiral-motivated model where the pion decay constant
is modified in the medium. Unlike in pionic atoms, the anomaly cannot be

Through the Looking Glass:How the COVID-19 Pandemic Changed International Branch Campuses’ Academic Experience and Home Campus Relationship
This study examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the academic experience at international branch campuses (IBCs) and has changed the relationship between the IBC and the home campus. Semi-structured interviews with 26 leaders, academic staff, and students at seven IBCs in Malaysia revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the experience at IBCs in unique ways, including collaboration and communication with the home campus; increasing campus-specific resources for student wellbeing; and playing a larger role in student enrollment, recruitment, and mobility initiatives. Findings provide useful insights for higher education institutions (HEIs) engaged in transnational education (TNE)
Making the Grade:Do International Branch Campuses and Their Home Campuses Differ in International Student Satisfaction With the Academic Experience?
This study investigates differences in academic satisfaction among undergraduate international students studying at international branch campuses (IBCs) and their home campuses, considering student stage of study, gender, and institution. It draws on data from 2,145 undergraduate international students enrolled at four home campuses and their six affiliated IBCs that responded to the 2018 International Student Barometer (ISB). Results indicate that international students studying at IBCs were significantly less satisfied with their academic experience-including constructs of academic and teaching quality, academic environment, and academic engagement-than international students studying at the associated home campuses. Results have important implications for how institutions carry out internationalization amid uncertain times; in particular, ensuring that the unique experiences of students are understood and considered in the planning and provision of transnational education
The Spectrum of Strings on Warped AdS_3 x S^3
String theory on NS-NS AdS_3 x S^3 admits an exactly marginal deformation
which breaks the SL(2,R)_R x SL(2,R)_L isometry of AdS_3 down to SL(2,R)_R x
U(1)_L. The holographic dual is an exotic and only partially understood type of
two-dimensional CFT with a reduced unbroken global conformal symmetry group. In
this paper we study the deformed theory on the string worldsheet. It is found
to be related by a spectral flow which is nonlocal in spacetime to the
undeformed worldsheet theory. An exact formula for the spectrum of massive

Small world yields the most effective information spreading
Spreading dynamics of information and diseases are usually analyzed by using
a unified framework and analogous models. In this paper, we propose a model to
emphasize the essential difference between information spreading and epidemic
spreading, where the memory effects, the social reinforcement and the
non-redundancy of contacts are taken into account. Under certain conditions,
the information spreads faster and broader in regular networks than in random
networks, which to some extent supports the recent experimental observation of
spreading in online society [D. Centola, Science {\bf 329}, 1194 (2010)]. At
the same time, simulation result indicates that the random networks tend to be
favorable for effective spreading when the network size increases. This
challenges the validity of the above-mentioned experiment for large-scale
systems. More significantly, we show that the spreading effectiveness can be
sharply enhanced by introducing a little randomness into the regular structure,
namely the small-world networks yield the most effective information spreading.
Our work provides insights to the understanding of the role of local clustering

Open Wilson Lines and Group Theory of Noncommutative Yang-Mills Theory in Two Dimensions
The correlation functions of open Wilson line operators in two-dimensional
Yang-Mills theory on the noncommutative torus are computed exactly. The
correlators are expressed in two equivalent forms. An instanton expansion
involves only topological numbers of Heisenberg modules and enables extraction
of the weak-coupling limit of the gauge theory. A dual algebraic expansion
involves only group theoretic quantities, winding numbers and translational
zero modes, and enables analysis of the strong-coupling limit of the gauge
theory and the high-momentum behaviour of open Wilson lines. The dual
expressions can be interpreted physically as exact sums over contributions from
