Structural distortion and the spin liquid state in Tb2Ti2O7

It is shown that a k=0, A_{2u} distortion of the terbium tetrahedral network in Tb2Ti2O7 accounts for the apparent isolation of single tetrahedra as seen in neutron scattering studies. Single tetrahedron collective spin states, rather than individual spins, account for the main features of the spin liquid state, namely, fluctuating local moments and the absence of long range order. Singlet and doublet collective spin ground states are considered. An effective interaction between tetrahedra on the fcc lattice is derived and found to be weak and anisotropic.Comment: 5 page

It is argued that the bracket of Anderson's canonical theory should have been antisymmetric otherwise serious controversies arise like violation of both hermiticity and the Leibniz rule of differentiation.Comment: 3 pages, LaTe

Performance of the modified Becke-Johnson potential

Very recently, in the 2011 version of the Wien2K code, the long standing shortcome of the codes based on Density Functional Theory, namely, its impossibility to account for the experimental band gap value of semiconductors, was overcome. The novelty is the introduction of a new exchange and correlation potential, the modified Becke-Johnson potential (mBJLDA). In this paper, we report our detailed analysis of this recent work. We calculated using this code, the band structure of forty one semiconductors and found an important improvement in the overall agreement with experiment as Tran and Blaha [{\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} 102, 226401 (2009)] did before for a more reduced set of semiconductors. We find, nevertheless, within this enhanced set, that the deviation from the experimental gap value can reach even much more than 20%, in some cases. Furthermore, since there is no exchange and correlation energy term from which the mBJLDA potential can be deduced, a direct optimization procedure to get the lattice parameter in a consistent way is not possible as in the usual theory. These authors suggest that a LDA or a GGA optimization procedure is used previous to a band structure calculation and the resulting lattice parameter introduced into the 2011 code. This choice is important since small percentage differences in the lattice parameter can give rise to quite higher percentage deviations from experiment in the predicted band gap value.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 5 Table

Detailed calculations of the contribution from off-shell effects to the quasiclassical tunneling of fusing particles are provided. It is shown that these effects change the Gamow rates of certain nuclear reactions in dense plasma by several orders of magnitude.Comment: 11 pages; change of content: added clarification of one of the important steps in the derivatio

    A Quantum-Classical Brackets from p-Mechanics

    Get PDF
We provide an answer to the long standing problem of mixing quantum and classical dynamics within a single formalism. The construction is based on p-mechanical derivation (quant-ph/0212101, quant-ph/0304023) of quantum and classical dynamics from the representation theory of the Heisenberg group. To achieve a quantum-classical mixing we take the product of two copies of the Heisenberg group which represent two different Planck's constants. In comparison with earlier guesses our answer contains an extra term of analytical nature, which was not obtained before in purely algebraic setup. Keywords: Moyal brackets, Poisson brackets, commutator, Heisenberg group, orbit method, representation theory, Planck's constant, quantum-classical mixingComment: LaTeX, 7 pages (EPL style), no figures; v2: example of dynamics with two different Planck's constants is added, minor corrections; v3: major revion, a complete example of quantum-classic dynamics is given; v4: few grammatic correction

Nucleon polarizabilities in the perturbative chiral quark model

The nucleon polarizabilities alpha(E) and beta(M) are studied in the context of the perturbative chiral quark model. We demonstrate that meson cloud effects are sufficient to explain the electric polarizability of nucleon. Contributions of excite quark states to the paramagnetic polarizability are dominant and cancel the diamagnetic polarizability arising from the chiral field. The obtained results are compared to data and other theoretical predictions.Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 2 table

    Time-Symmetric Quantum Theory of Smoothing

Smoothing is an estimation technique that takes into account both past and future observations, and can be more accurate than filtering alone. In this Letter, a quantum theory of smoothing is constructed using a time-symmetric formalism, thereby generalizing prior work on classical and quantum filtering, retrodiction, and smoothing. The proposed theory solves the important problem of optimally estimating classical Markov processes coupled to a quantum system under continuous measurements, and is thus expected to find major applications in future quantum sensing systems, such as gravitational wave detectors and atomic magnetometers.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, v2: accepted by PR

Dynamical coupled channel calculation of pion and omega meson production

A dynamical coupled channel approach is used to study π\pi and ω\omega--meson production induced by pions and photons scattering from the proton. Six intermediate channels including πN\pi N, ηN\eta N, πΔ\pi\Delta, σN\sigma N, ρN\rho N and ωN\omega N are employed to describe unpolarized and polarized data. Bare parameters in an effective hadronic Lagrangian are determined in a fit to data for πNπN\pi N \to \pi N, γNπN\gamma N \to \pi N, πpωn\pi^- p \to \omega n, and γpωp\gamma p \to \omega p reactions at center-of-mass energies from threshold to W<2.0W < 2.0 GeV. The TT matrix determined in these fits is used to calculate the photon beam asymmetry for ω\omega-meson production and the ωNωN\omega N \to\omega N total cross section and ωN\omega N scattering lengths.Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Phys. Slow spin relaxation in a highly polarized cooperative paramagnet

We report measurements of the ac susceptibility of the cooperative paramagnet Tb2Ti2O7 in a strong magnetic field. Our data show the expected saturation maximum in chi(T) and also an unexpected low frequency dependence (< 1 Hz) of this peak, suggesting very slow spin relaxations are occurring. Measurements on samples diluted with nonmagnetic Y3+ or Lu3+ and complementary measurements on pure and diluted Dy2Ti2O7 strongly suggest that the relaxation is associated with dipolar spin correlations, representing unusual cooperative behavior in a paramagnetic system.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

Structural Fluctuations in the Spin Liquid State of Tb2Ti2O7

High resolution X-ray scattering measurements on single crystal Tb2Ti2O7 reveal finite structural correlations at low temperatures. This geometrically frustrated pyrochlore is known to exhibit a spin liquid, or cooperative paramagnetic state, at temperatures below ~ 20 K. Parametric studies of structural Bragg peaks appropriate to the Fd3ˉ\bar{3}m space group of Tb2Ti2O7 reveal substantial broadening and peak intensity reduction in the temperature regime 20 K to 300 mK. We also observe a small, anomalous lattice expansion on cooling below a density maximum at ~ 18 K. These measurements are consistent with the development of fluctuations above a cooperative Jahn-Teller, cubic-tetragonal phase transition at very low temperatures.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publicatio
