The Exact Ground State of the Frenkel-Kontorova Model with Repeated Parabolic Potential: II. Numerical Treatment
A procedure is described for efficiently finding the ground state energy and
configuration for a Frenkel-Kontorova model in a periodic potential, consisting
of N parabolic segments of identical curvature in each period, through a
numerical solution of the convex minimization problem described in the
preceding paper. The key elements are the use of subdifferentials to describe
the structure of the minimization problem; an intuitive picture of how to solve
it, based on motion of quasiparticles; and a fast linear optimization method
with a reduced memory requirement. The procedure has been tested for N up to

Combining Thesaurus Knowledge and Probabilistic Topic Models
In this paper we present the approach of introducing thesaurus knowledge into
probabilistic topic models. The main idea of the approach is based on the
assumption that the frequencies of semantically related words and phrases,
which are met in the same texts, should be enhanced: this action leads to their
larger contribution into topics found in these texts. We have conducted
experiments with several thesauri and found that for improving topic models, it
is useful to utilize domain-specific knowledge. If a general thesaurus, such as
WordNet, is used, the thesaurus-based improvement of topic models can be

Choice of Consistent Family, and Quantum Incompatibility
In consistent history quantum theory, a description of the time development
of a quantum system requires choosing a framework or consistent family, and
then calculating probabilities for the different histories which it contains.
It is argued that the framework is chosen by the physicist constructing a
description of a quantum system on the basis of questions he wishes to address,
in a manner analogous to choosing a coarse graining of the phase space in
classical statistical mechanics. The choice of framework is not determined by
some law of nature, though it is limited by quantum incompatibility, a concept
which is discussed using a two-dimensional Hilbert space (spin half particle).
Thus certain questions of physical interest can only be addressed using
frameworks in which they make (quantum mechanical) sense. The physicist's
choice does not influence reality, nor does the presence of choices render the
theory subjective. On the contrary, predictions of the theory can, in
principle, be verified by experimental measurements. These considerations are
used to address various criticisms and possible misunderstandings of the
consistent history approach, including its predictive power, whether it
requires a new logic, whether it can be interpreted realistically, the nature
of ``quasiclassicality'', and the possibility of ``contrary'' inferences.Comment: Minor revisions to bring into conformity with published version.

Collision of High Frequency Plane Gravitational and Electromagnetic Waves
We study the head-on collision of linearly polarized, high frequency plane
gravitational waves and their electromagnetic counterparts in the
Einstein-Maxwell theory. The post-collision space-times are obtained by solving
the vacuum Einstein-Maxwell field equations in the geometrical optics
approximation. The head-on collisions of all possible pairs of these systems of
waves is described and the results are then generalised to non-linearly
polarized waves which exhibit the maximum two degrees of freedom of

MAGMO: Coherent magnetic fields in the star forming regions of the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm tangent
We present the pilot results of the `MAGMO' project, targeted observations of
ground-state hydroxyl masers towards sites of 6.7-GHz methanol maser emission
in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm tangent, Galactic longitudes 280 degrees
to 295 degrees. The `MAGMO' project aims to determine if Galactic magnetic
fields can be traced with Zeeman splitting of masers associated with star
formation. Pilot observations of 23 sites of methanol maser emission were made,
with the detection of ground-state hydroxyl masers towards 11 of these and six
additional offset sites. Of these 17 sites, nine are new detections of sites of
1665-MHz maser emission, three of them accompanied by 1667-MHz emission. More
than 70% of the maser features have significant circular polarization, whilst
only ~10% have significant linear polarization (although some features with up
to 100% linear polarization are found). We find 11 Zeeman pairs across six
sites of high-mass star formation with implied magnetic field strengths between
-1.5 mG and +3.8 mG and a median field strength of +1.6 mG. Our measurements of
Zeeman splitting imply that a coherent field orientation is experienced by the
maser sites across a distance of 5.3+/-2.0 kpc within the Carina-Sagittarius
