Design of experiments for non-manufacturing processes : benefits, challenges and some examples
Design of Experiments (DoE) is a powerful technique for process optimization that has been widely deployed in almost all types of manufacturing processes and is used extensively in product and process design and development. There have not been as many efforts to apply powerful quality improvement techniques such as DoE to improve non-manufacturing processes. Factor levels often involve changing the way people work and so have to be handled carefully. It is even more important to get everyone working as a team. This paper explores the benefits and challenges in the application of DoE in non-manufacturing contexts. The viewpoints regarding the benefits and challenges of DoE in the non-manufacturing arena are gathered from a number of leading academics and practitioners in the field. The paper also makes an attempt to demystify the fact that DoE is not just applicable to manufacturing industries; rather it is equally applicable to non-manufacturing processes within manufacturing companies. The last part of the paper illustrates some case examples showing the power of the technique in non-manufacturing environments
Deuterium Abundance in the Most Metal-Poor Damped Lyman alpha System: Converging on Omega_baryons
The most metal-poor DLA known to date, at z = 2.61843 in the spectrum of the
QSO Q0913+072, with an oxygen abundance only about 1/250 of the solar value,
shows six well resolved D I Lyman series transitions in high quality echelle
spectra recently obtained with the ESO VLT. We deduce a value of the deuterium
abundance log (D/H) = -4.56+/-0.04 which is in good agreement with four out of
the six most reliable previous determinations of this ratio in QSO absorbers.
We find plausible reasons why in the other two cases the 1 sigma errors may
have been underestimated by about a factor of two. The addition of this latest
data point does not change significantly the mean value of the primordial
abundance of deuterium, suggesting that we are now converging to a reliable
measure of this quantity. We conclude that = -4.55+/-0.03 and
Omega_b h^2 (BBN) = 0.0213+/-0.0010 (68% confidence limits). Including the
latter as a prior in the analysis of the five year data of WMAP leads to a
revised best-fitting value of the power-law index of primordial fluctuations
n_s = 0.956+/-0.013 (1 sigma) and n_s < 0.990 with 99% confidence. Considering
together the constraints provided by WMAP 5, (D/H)_p, baryon oscillations in
the galaxy distribution, and distances to Type Ia supernovae, we arrive at the
current best estimates Omega_b h^2 = 0.0224+/-0.0005 and n_s = 0.959+/-0.013.Comment: 13 pages, 8 Figures. Revised version following referee's comments.

Marketing Policy Options for Consumer Price Mitigation Actions in the 2008/09 Maize Marketing Season in Zambia.
1) Maize prices are rising rapidly in 2008 and are fast approaching import parity levels. 2) Maize traders, millers and farmers all agree that Zambia will likely require imports by early 2009 in order to avoid domestic maize supply shortages. 3) Official food balance sheets appear to have underestimated the demand for maize this year. They may also have slightly overestimated the size of the 2007/08 maize crop. Hence the slow government recognition of the need for maize imports. 4) As of late September 2008, neither the Government of Zambia (GRZ) nor the private sector have arranged to import maize from South Africa. Trade sources suggest informal imports from Tanzania are helping to relieve the likely shortfall. 5) Zambian policy makers face a delicate balancing act: they need to maintain remunerative prices for farmers, in order to stimulate maize supply response during the coming 2008/09 production season, while at the same time moderating maize meal price increases to protect urban consumers and the many rural households who are net buyers of maize. 6) The time to respond to this balancing act challenge is now rather than later in the marketing season when costs of supplies and transport will increase. 7) Several policy actions offer potential win/win options for balancing these twin concerns:food security, food policy, Zambia, maize, marketing, Crop Production/Industries, Q20,
The integration of Industry 4.0 and Lean Management: A systematic review and constituting elements perspective
This paper explores the prevalent themes for integrating Industry 4.0 and Lean Management to provide a red thread concerning ‘what’ and ‘how’ to execute their integration. Furthermore, gaps in current literature are identified, and an agenda for future research is developed. The research is based on a systematic literature review of 111 papers that were published in academic journals between 2015 and 2021. In contrast to previous reviews, we focus on constituting elements of Lean Management and Industry 4.0 to offer a perspective closely related to practical implementations. The findings suggest Total Productive Maintenance as one exemplary constituting element representing the ‘what’ level and Change Management as a discipline with answers concerning the ‘how’ level. The paper offers a holistic view for practitioners facing the need for an integrated implementation of Industry 4.0 and Lean Management. Prevalent themes can be included in organisational transformation efforts to increase success rates in change projects. Deriving gaps in the current literature and developing an agenda for future research focused on operational concepts offers possibilities for further research with high practical relevance
A Systematic Review of the Integration of Industry 4.0 with Quality-related Operational Excellence Methodologies
This study examines the common themes for integrating Industry 4.0 with quality-related Operational Excellence methodologies to provide a comprehensive overview of ‘what’ and ‘how’ to combine them in an initial integration process. In addition, the gaps in the present literature are aggregated, and a research plan for the future is proposed. The study is based on a systematic review of 37 papers published in academic journals between 2015 and 2021. Unlike previous reviews, this study concentrates on the ‘what’ and ‘how’ level of Total Quality Management, Lean Six Sigma, and Business Process Management as quality-related Operational Excellence methodologies integrated with Industry 4.0 to provide a practical perspective when executing their integration and implementation. Findings indicate a strong technical and data-driven integration focus across the three themes. Furthermore, modes of action as moderators of success were derived as initial variables to be included in quality-driven Industry 4.0 transitions. Identifying gaps in the present literature and defining a research agenda centred on operational principles opens up opportunities for future study with significant practical value
Effect of Lunar Dust Simulant on Human Epithelial Cell Lines
The purpose of this project is to assess the potential toxicity of lunar dust to cause the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by human lung cells. Some of this dust is on the scale of 1-2 micrometers and could enter the lungs when astronauts track dust into the habitat and inhale it. This could be a serious problem as NASA plans on going back to the moon for an extended period of time. Literature shows that quartz, which has a known cytoxicity, can cause acute cases of silicosis within 6 months, and in most cases cause silicosis after 3 years. The activation of lunar dust through impacts creates surface based radicals which, upon contact with water create hydroxl radicals and peroxyl radicals which are very reactive and potentially might even be as cytotoxic as quartz. These radicals could then react with lung cells to produce pro-inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-6 and interleukin-8, and TNF-alpha

Integration of Industry 4.0 technologies into Lean Six Sigma DMAIC: a systematic review
This review examines which Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies are suitable for improving Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tasks and the benefits of integrating these technologies into improvement projects. Also, it explores existing integration frameworks and discusses their relevance. A quantitative analysis of 692 papers and an in-depth analysis of 41 papers revealed that “Analyse” is by far the best-supported DMAICs phase through techniques such as Data Mining, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things, and Process Mining. This paper also proposes a DMAIC 4.0 framework based on multiple technologies. The mapping of I4.0 related techniques to DMAIC phases and tools is a novelty compared to previous studies regarding the diversity of digital technologies applied. LSS practitioners facing the challenges of increasing complexity and data volumes can benefit from understanding how I4.0 technology can support their DMAIC projects and which of the suggested approaches they can adopt for their context

The Bell Laboratories (13)CO Survey: Longitude-Velocity Maps
A survey is presented of the Galactic plane in the J=1-0 transition of
(13)CO. About 73,000 spectra were obtained with the 7 m telescope at Bell
Laboratories over a ten-year period. The coverage of survey is (l, b) = (-5 to
117, -1 to +1), or 244 square degrees, with a grid spacing of 3' for |b| < 0.5,
and a grid spacing of 6' for |b| > 0.5. The data presented here have been
resampled onto a 3' grid. For 0.68 km/s channels, the rms noise level of the
survey is 0.1 K on the scale. The raw data have been transformed into
FITS format, and all the reduction processes, such as correcting for emission
in the reference positions, baseline removal and interpolation were conducted
within IRAF using the FCRAO task package and additional programs. The reduced
data are presented here in the form of longitude-velocity color maps at each
latitude. These data allow identification and classification of molecular
clouds with masses in excess of ~ 1,000 solar masses throughout the first
quadrant of the Galaxy. Spiral structure is manifested by the locations of the
