Committed to quality in physical activity programmes for elderly people – The customer results

    Get PDF
There has been a growing concern in conceiving physical activity (PA) programmes for elderly people since the evidence indicates that this type of health promotion interventions may reduce the deleterious effects of the aging process. In Portugal, the Public Administration is the sector that offers the largest supply of goods and services and as such, it is the sector that must devote most attention to Quality Some studies support the EFQM Excellence Model as an operational framework for Total Quality Management. Excellent Results with respect to Performance, Customers, People and Society are achieved through Leadership driving Policy and Strategy that is delivered through People, Partnerships and Resources, as well as Processes. Consequently, the EFQM Model might be used as a self-assessment instrument, to discern the strengths of the programmes, as well as areas in which improvement can be made. The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the existence of customers’ outcomes measurement in Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people, comparing it with programmes’ characteristics and 2) to analyse the associations between the different evaluated items. Data were collected by an on-line questionnaire sent to 26 Coordinators of PA Programmes. Descriptive statistics were used in order to characterize de PA programmes and the participants’ outcome measurement items. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s Exact Test and Pearson’s Qui-square test. 57,7 % of the programmes recorded participants’ outcome measures at regular intervals. Most of them (73,3%; p 0.05) were free of charge programmes. Statistically significant associations were found between the following outcomes items: cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, balance and body composition. Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people showed a feeble attention on participants’ outcome measures, even though the measurement process represents one of the most important components of customer results from an exercise programme. Furthermore, there are significant differences between customers’ outcome measures chosen by each programme.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influence of the external pressure on the quantum correlations of molecular magnets

The study of quantum correlations in solid state systems is a large avenue for research and their detection and manipulation are an actual challenge to overcome. In this context, we show by using first-principles calculations on the prototype material KNaCuSi4_{4}O10_{10} that the degree of quantum correlations in this spin cluster system can be managed by external hydrostatic pressure. Our results open the doors for research in detection and manipulation of quantum correlations in magnetic systems with promising applications in quantum information science

Procedure for Sr and Nd isotope analysis in the terrigenous component of marine sediments

In this paper, an experimental procedure for measuring 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios in the detrital fraction of marine sediments is presented. Since these sediments commonly include a significant biogenic carbonate fraction, several methodologies were tested in order to leach the carbonates without compromising the composition of the terrigenous component. The extraction with 5N acetic acid for 12 hours, at room temperature, reveals (a) to be effective in the removal of carbonates, and (b) to preserve detrital phases that incorporate important amounts of REE. The applicability of this chemical procedure is illustrated with analyses done on samples from a core collected in the Galician continental slope. The results for both radiogenic decay systems, on one hand, are consistent with the isotope signature of material resulting from the erosion of continental crust and, one the other hand, allow the identification of several episodes of modification of the source areas involved

The aims of this study were (1) to analyse the influence of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and parental overweight status (POS) and socioeconomic status (SES) on abdominal obesity. This study was comprised of 779 adolescents (12-18 years). Waist-height ratio (WHtR), 20 m shuttle-run test to ascertain CRF, POS according to World Health Organization recommendations and SES of parents using level of education were analysed. Using WHtR, the prevalence of abdominal obesity was 21.3% (23.5% girls and 17.9% boys; p = 0.062). Regardless of gender, participants who belonged to the WHtR risk group had significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower CRF scores than the WHtR non-risk group; 84.4% of girls who belonged to the WHtR risk group had one or two overweight parents (p ≤ 0.05). Boys with low CRF (OR: 6.43; CI: 3.33-12.39) were more likely to belong to the WHtR risk group compared with their lean peers. Girls with low CRF (OR: 1.78; CI: 1.14-2.78) and with at least one overweight parent (OR: 2.50; CI: 1.07-5.85) or two overweight parents (OR: 4.90; CI: 2.08-11.54) were associated with the risk of abdominal obesity. This study highlights the influence of adolescents' family on abdominal obesity, especially in girls. Further, the data suggested that low CRF was a strong predictor of risk values of abdominal obesity in adolescence

Pigmented spots in the skin and mucosa (lentigines) can be found in various diseases called familial lentiginosis syndromes; Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is one of them. It is characterized by the association of mucocutaneous melanin pigmentation and hamartomatous gastrointestinal polyps. Patients with PJS are at increased risk of intussusception and cancer development (gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal tumors). We present a 5-year-old girl with pigmented macules of perioral and perinasal skin, lips, and buccal mucosa and review lentiginoses and the surveillance of PJS

The determination of the apsidal angles and Bertrand's theorem

We derive an expression for the determination of the apsidal angles that holds good for arbitrary central potentials. Then we discuss under what conditions the apsidal angles remain independent of the mechanical energy and angular momentum in the central force problem. As a consequence, an alternative and non-perturbative proof of Bertrand's theorem is obtained.Comment: Latex file, one figure; submitted for publicatio

The use of biomarkers to evaluate the toxicity of metaldehyde and methiocarb baits to the terrestrial isopod porcellionides pruinosus Brandt, 1833

    Get PDF
Biochemical indicators (biomarkers) are known to provide early warning signs of environmental pollution or stress conditions to the organisms, by measuring cellular or molecular responses of the target organism to xenobiotic agents. In this study, the terrestrial isopod Porcellionides pruinosus was exposed to these two molluscicides and three different enzymes, glutathione Stransferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and catalase (CAT) were analyzed to evaluate the effects of the application of the two molluscicides in single exposures and binary mixtures tests. Results indicate that the carbamate methiocarb inhibited significantly AChE activity, but no effects were observed in CAT and GST levels. The exposure to the metaldehyde had no effects on AChE, but a decrease in the higher exposure period was observed in GST levels as well as a general increase in CAT activity. The combined exposure of the two molluscicides resulted in a general decrease in AChE and CAT activity, but no visible effects were observed in terms of GST. The use of several biomarkers was a suitable tool to understand the mode of action of these two molluscicides in this isopod species
