    Engaging Students by Developing Patterns from a Historic Garment

    Apparel construction courses provide opportunity for hands-on activities (McKeatchie, Pintrich, Lin, & Smith, 1987) and using a historic costume collection. Hands-on learning activities in apparel construction courses that incorporated history of costume has been found to enhance students\u27 critical thinking and analysis of skills (Banard, 2015). These skills are valuable in the fashion industry (Banard; Weaver, 2011). A hands-on teaching assignment was developed in which a flat pattern class made patterns from historic garments to prepare for the digitizing process and the proposed steps in product development. Purpose/Objective of Strategy The purpose/objective of this teaching strategy was to: 1. apply flat pattern skills to replicate a historic garment, 2. record the measurements needed to successfully replicate a historic garment, 3. critically evaluate patterns made from a historic garment, 4. demonstrate how to manipulate pattern pieces to create style lines or shape into garments via flat pattern methods, and 5. translate a design idea into a flat pattern. This class will be implemented in the curriculum

    Utilizing a Historic Costume Collection for a Synergistic Educational Experience

    This teaching strategy was developed in collaboration with a local community group who worked with university faculty on an event that involved raising funds for their scholarship award and bringing awareness to the university collection. The activity culminated in a fashion show featuring historic garments from the university collection rolled down a runway on a dress form, followed by an original apparel design that was inspired by the historic piece and made by a university student. The fashion show was similar to a mid-20th century fashion show with commentary on the style features of each garment. Students agreed that they enjoyed seeing their creations come to life, and modelling their own work. Students also realized the relevancy of a university costume collection and the amount of work is needed for a successful fashion show. Overall, the fashion show provided a sense of accomplishment and connection with their peers and community

CNEN/SP, was evaluated for the Ca, Fe, K, Mn, Na and Zn determinations in animal feed samples for ruminants through a proficiency test (PT) program. This PT program is organized by Embrapa Cattle Southeast to evaluate laboratories that analyze animal feed samples. Considering the fractions of satisfactory z-scores (%) of evaluated analytes to determine the laboratories performance, the general performance indicator obtained by IPEN ?     Signatures of the excitonic memory effects in four-wave mixing processes in cavity polaritons

    We report the signatures of the exciton correlation effects with finite memory time in frequency domain degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in semiconductor microcavity. By utilizing the polarization selection rules, we discriminate instantaneous, mean field interactions between excitons with the same spins, long-living correlation due to the formation of biexciton state by excitons with opposite spins, and short-memory correlation effects in the continuum of unbound two-exciton states. The DFWM spectra give us the relative contributions of these effects and the upper limit for the time of the exciton-exciton correlation in the unbound two-exciton continuum. The obtained results reveal the basis of the cavity polariton scattering model for the DFWM processes in high-Q GaAs microcavity.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
