    Investigations of fast neutron production by 190 GeV/c muon interactions on different targets

    The production of fast neutrons (1 MeV - 1 GeV) in high energy muon-nucleus interactions is poorly understood, yet it is fundamental to the understanding of the background in many underground experiments. The aim of the present experiment (CERN NA55) was to measure spallation neutrons produced by 190 GeV/c muons scattering on carbon, copper and lead targets. We have investigated the energy spectrum and angular distribution of spallation neutrons, and we report the result of our measurement of the neutron production differential cross section.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures ep

    Kanamycin resistance during in vitro development of pollen from transgenic tomato plants

    Effects of kanamycin on pollen germination and tube growth of pollen from non-transformed plants and from transgenic tomato plants containing a chimaeric kanamycin resistance gene were determined. Germination of pollen was not affected by the addition of kanamycin to the medium in both genotypes. Kanamycin, however, severely affected tube growth of pollen from non-transformed plants, while pollen from plants containing the chimaeric gene were less sensitive and produced significantly longer tubes at kanamycin concentrations between 200-400 mg l-1. Apparently, this resistance for kanamycin correlates with the expression of the chimaeric gene during male gametophytic development.

    Network Protein Interaction in the Link between Stroke and Periodontitis Interplay: A Pilot Bioinformatic Analysis

    The clinical interaction between stroke and periodontitis has been consistently studied and confirmed. Hence, exploring potentially new protein interactions in this association using bioinformatic strategies presents potential interest. In this exploratory study, we conducted a protein–protein network interaction (PPI) search with documented encoded proteins for both stroke and periodontitis. Genes of interest were collected via GWAS database. The STRING database was used to predict the PPI networks, first in a sensitivity purpose (confidence cut-off of 0.7), and then with a highest confidence cut-off (0.9). Genes over-representation was inspected in the final network. As a result, we foresee a prospective protein network of interaction between stroke and periodontitis. Inflammation, pro-coagulant/pro-thrombotic state and, ultimately, atheroma plaque rupture is the main biological mechanism derived from the network. These pilot results may pave the way to future molecular and therapeutic studies to further comprehend the mechanisms between these two conditions

    INTRODUCTION: Lymphoproliferative disorders, particularly non-Hodgkin's and Hodgkin's lymphomas, are rare in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. The use of thiopurines and infection by Epstein-Barr virus are well-known cofactors that can raise its prevalence. Other risk factors such as disease activity and biological treatment are the subject of discussion, without enough data in the literature to confirm a potential association. METHODS: We report a case of Hodgkin's lymphoma in a patient who had been treated with azathioprine and was on long-term monotherapy with infliximab. CONCLUSIONS: We stress the importance of recognizing the possible occurrence of a lymphoproliferative disorder in association with anti-tumor necrosis factor-α therapy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Characterisation of polycaprolactone scaffolds made by melt electrospinning writing for pelvic organ prolapse correction - a pilot study

    Additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies enable personalised treatments using custom-made prosthetics, implants and other medical devices. This research aimed to characterise novel biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) implants for pelvic organ prolapse repair, produced using melt electrospinning technology. PCL mesh filaments were printed in 5 configurations: 240 µm, 160 µm, three layers of 80 µm, two layers of 80 µm and one layer of 80 µm. Material sterilisation, degradation, mechanical behaviour, and geometric variation due to applied loads were studied. Polypropylene (PP) Restorelle mesh was used as a reference in this study and vaginal tissue as a baseline. Sterilisation by UV irradiation+ EtOH 70% did not affect the specimens. A significant weight loss was observed in 80 µm deposited fibers at 90 - and 180 - days of degradation, losing 10% of weight in neutral solution to 27% in acidic. All printed PCL deposited fibers had functional loss at 180 - day degradation in acidic solution (pH 4.2) (p < 0.05). PCL printed meshes were classified as ultra-lightweight, except lightweight 240 µm filament mesh. PCL meshes closely match the biomechanical properties of vaginal tissues, particularly in the comfort zone, unlike the Restorelle implant. The 3D printed mesh pores appeared to be stable compared to those of Restorelle meshes that had been used clinically until the FDA pulled its approval. Based on the pilot study results, improved implant designs will be studied, and in vitro experiments on the cell adhesion and growth response will be conducted
