Magnetoresistance of Three-Constituent Composites: Percolation Near a Critical Line
Scaling theory, duality symmetry, and numerical simulations of a random
network model are used to study the magnetoresistance of a
metal/insulator/perfect conductor composite with a disordered columnar
microstructure. The phase diagram is found to have a critical line which
separates regions of saturating and non-saturating magnetoresistance. The
percolation problem which describes this line is a generalization of
anisotropic percolation. We locate the percolation threshold and determine the
t = s = 1.30 +- 0.02, nu = 4/3 +- 0.02, which are the same as in
two-constituent 2D isotropic percolation. We also determine the exponents which
characterize the critical dependence on magnetic field, and confirm numerically
that nu is independent of anisotropy. We propose and test a complete scaling
description of the magnetoresistance in the vicinity of the critical line.Comment: Substantially revised version; description of behavior in finite

Non-fatal self-harm in Scottish military veterans: a retrospective cohort study of 57,000 veterans and 173,000 matched non-veterans
Purpose:
Although suicide risk in veterans has been widely studied, there is little information on the risk of non-fatal self-harm in this population. We used data from the Scottish Veterans Health Study to conduct an epidemiological analysis of self-harm in veterans, in comparison with people who have never served.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective, 30-year cohort study of 56,205 veterans born 1945–1985, and 172,741 people with no record of military service, and used Cox proportional hazard models to examine the association between veteran status and cumulative risk of non-fatal self-harm, overall and stratified by birth cohort, sex and length of service. We also examined mental and physical comorbidities, and association of suicide with prior self-harm.
Results:
There were 1620 (2.90%) first episodes of self-harm in veterans, compared with 4212 (2.45%) in non-veterans. The difference was statistically significant overall (unadjusted HR 1.27, 95% CI 1.21–1.35, p < 0.001). The risk was highest in the oldest veterans, and in the early service leavers who failed to complete initial training (unadjusted HR 1.69, 95% CI 1.50–1.91, p < 0.001). The risk reduced with longer service and in the intermediate birth cohorts but has increased again in the youngest cohort.
Conclusions:
The highest risk of non-fatal self-harm was in veterans with the shortest service, especially those who did not complete training or minimum engagement, and in the oldest birth cohorts, whilst those who had served the longest were at reduced risk. The risk has increased again in the youngest veterans, and further study of this subgroup is indicated
New Method to Calculate Electrical Forces Acting on a Sphere in an Electrorheological Fluid
We describe a method to calculate the electrical force acting on a sphere in
a suspension of dielectric spheres in a host with a different dielectric
constant, under the assumption that a spatially uniform electric field is
applied. The method uses a spectral representation for the total electrostatic
energy of the composite. The force is expressed as a certain gradient of this
energy, which can be expressed in a closed analytic form rather than evaluated
as a numerical derivative. The method is applicable even when both the spheres
and the host have frequency-dependent dielectric functions and nonzero
conductivities, provided the system is in the quasistatic regime. In principle,
it includes all multipolar contributions to the force, and it can be used to
calculate multi-body as well as pairwise forces. We also present several
numerical examples, including host fluids with finite conductivities. The force
between spheres approaches the dipole-dipole limit, as expected, at large
separations, but departs drastically from that limit when the spheres are
nearly in contact. The force may also change sign as a function of frequency

Preliminary results on SiO v=3 J=1-0 maser emission from AGB stars
We present the results of SiO maser observations at 43GHz toward two AGB
stars using the VLBA. Our preliminary results on the relative positions of the
different J=1-0 SiO masers (v=1,2 and 3) indicate that the current ideas on SiO
maser pumping could be wrong at some fundamental level. A deep revision of the

SiO masers from AGB stars in the vibrationally excited v=1,v=2, and v=3 states
The v=1 and v=2 J=1-0 (43 GHz), and v=1 J=2-1 (86 GHz) SiO masers are intense
in AGB stars and have been mapped using VLBI showing ring-like distributions.
Those of the v=1, v=2 J=1-0 masers are similar, but the spots are rarely
coincident, while the v=1 J=2-1 maser arises from a well separated region
farther out. These relative locations can be explained by models tools that
include the overlap of two IR lines of SiO and H2O. The v=3 J=1-0 line is not
directly affected by any line overlap and its spot structure and position,
relative to the other lines, is a good test to the standard pumping models. We
present single-dish and simultaneous VLBI observations of the v=1, v=2, and v=3
J=1-0 maser transitions of 28SiO in several AGB stars. The spatial distribution
of the SiO maser emission in the v=3 J=1-0 transition from AGB stars is
systematically composed of a series of spots that occupy a ring-like structure.
The overall ring structure is extremely similar to that found in the other 43
GHz transitions and is very different from the structure of the v=1 J=2-1
maser. The positions of the individual spots of the different 43 GHz lines are,
however, very rarely coincident, which in general is separated by about 0.3 AU
(between 1 and 5 mas). These results are very difficult to reconcile with
standard pumping models, which predict that the masers of rotational
transitions within a given vibrational state require very similar excitation
conditions, while the transitions of different vibrational states should appear
in different positions. However, models including line overlap tend to predict
v=1, v=2, v=3 J=1-0 population inversion to occur under very similar
conditions, while the requirements for v=1 J=2-1 appear clearly different, and

First-Principles Approach to Electrorotation Assay
We have presented a theoretical study of electrorotation assay based on the
spectral representation theory. We consider unshelled and shelled spheroidal
particles as an extension to spherical ones. From the theoretical analysis, we
find that the coating can change the characteristic frequency at which the
maximum rotational angular velocity occurs. The shift in the characteristic
frequency is attributed to a change in the dielectric properties of the
bead-coating complex with respect to those of the uncoated particles. By
adjusting the dielectric properties and the thickness of the coating, it is
possible to obtain good agreement between our theoretical predictions and the

Engineering Electromagnetic Properties of Periodic Nanostructures Using Electrostatic Resonances
Electromagnetic properties of periodic two-dimensional sub-wavelength
structures consisting of closely-packed inclusions of materials with negative
dielectric permittivity in a dielectric host with positive
can be engineered using the concept of multiple electrostatic
resonances. Fully electromagnetic solutions of Maxwell's equations reveal
multiple wave propagation bands, with the wavelengths much longer than the
nanostructure period. It is shown that some of these bands are described using
the quasi-static theory of the effective dielectric permittivity
, and are independent of the nanostructure period. Those bands
exhibit multiple cutoffs and resonances which are found to be related to each
other through a duality condition. An additional propagation band characterized
by a negative magnetic permeability develops when a magnetic moment is induced
in a given nano-particle by its neighbors. Imaging with sub-wavelength
resolution in that band is demonstrated
Early adoption of screening and the changing pattern of cervical cancer in UK Military women: evidence from the Scottish Veterans Health Study
Objective: To examine the risk of cervical cancer in a large national cohort of military veteran women followed up for up to 30 years.
Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 5235 veteran women born between 1945 and 1985, and 20 703 women with no record of service matched for age and area of residence, using Cox proportional hazard models to compare the overall risk of cervical cancer and by year of birth.
Results: During the follow-up period 1981–2012, there were 18 (0.34%) cases of cervical cancer in the veteran women compared with 81 (0.39%) in the non-veterans. The difference was not statistically significant overall (adjusted HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.59). When analysed by the year of birth, veteran women born in 1958 and earlier had a non-significantly higher risk than non-veterans (adjusted HR 1.24, 95% CI 0.68 to 2.26), while veteran women born after 1958 had a non-significant reduction in risk (adjusted HR 0.51, 95% CI 0.18 to 1.44).
Conclusions: Women born after 1958 who have served in the Armed Forces are at reduced risk of cervical cancer compared with women who have never served, and compared with older veteran women. Small numbers of cases precluded statistical significance. The change in risk pattern in veteran women coincided with the introduction of cervical screening in the Armed Forces, which predated the UK national programme, and provides evidence for the long-term effectiveness of the Armed Forces’ sexual health strategy. The impact of recent changes in the screening age, and of human papillomavirus immunisation, should be monitored in the future
A High Speed Network for Remote Observing from Caltech with the Keck Telescope
We are setting up a high speed (DS3) ATM network running from the dome of the 10-meter Keck Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii to the Caltech campus in Pasadena, California. This network will be used to support remote observing, remote diagnostics of problems, remote software development, and other related tasks. We discuss the motivation for this effort, the network architecture, and the current status of this project
