Research pressure instrumentation for NASA Space Shuttle main engine, modification no. 5
The objective of the research project described is to define and demonstrate methods to advance the state of the art of pressure sensors for the space shuttle main engine (SSME). Silicon piezoresistive technology was utilized in completing tasks: generation and testing of three transducer design concepts for solid state applications; silicon resistor characterization at cryogenic temperatures; experimental chip mounting characterization; frequency response optimization and prototype design and fabrication. Excellent silicon sensor performance was demonstrated at liquid nitrogen temperature. A silicon resistor ion implant dose was customized for SSME temperature requirements. A basic acoustic modeling software program was developed as a design tool to evaluate frequency response characteristics

The purpose of Modification No. 5 of this contract is to expand the scope of work (Task C) of this research study effort to develop pressure instrumentation for the SSME. The objective of this contract (Task C) is to direct Honeywell's Solid State Electronics Division's (SSED) extensive experience and expertise in solid state sensor technology to develop prototype pressure transducers which are targeted to meet the SSME performance design goals and to fabricate, test and deliver a total of 10 prototype units. SSED's basic approach is to effectively utilize the many advantages of silicon piezoresistive strain sensing technology to achieve the objectives of advanced state-of-the-art pressure sensors in terms of reliability, accuracy and ease of manufacture. More specifically, integration of multiple functions on a single chip is the key attribute of this technology which will be exploited during this research study

The horofunction boundary of the Hilbert geometry
We investigate the horofunction boundary of the Hilbert geometry defined on
an arbitrary finite-dimensional bounded convex domain D. We determine its set
of Busemann points, which are those points that are the limits of
`almost-geodesics'. In addition, we show that any sequence of points converging
to a point in the horofunction boundary also converges in the usual sense to a
point in the Euclidean boundary of D. We prove that all horofunctions are
Busemann points if and only if the set of extreme sets of the polar of D is

Ten myths about character, virtue and virtue education – plus three well-founded misgivings
Initiatives to cultivate character and virtue in moral education at school continue to provoke sceptical responses. Most of those echo familiar misgivings about the notions of character, virtue and education in virtue – as unclear, redundant, old-fashioned, religious, paternalistic, anti-democratic, conservative, individualistic, relative and situation dependent. I expose those misgivings as ‘myths’, while at the same time acknowledging three better-founded historical, methodological and practical concerns about the notions in question
Ex-nihilo: Obstacles Surrounding Teaching the Standard Model
The model of the Big Bang is an integral part of the national curriculum for
England. Previous work (e.g. Baxter 1989) has shown that pupils often come into
education with many and varied prior misconceptions emanating from both
internal and external sources. Whilst virtually all of these misconceptions can
be remedied, there will remain (by its very nature) the obstacle of ex-nihilo,
as characterised by the question `how do you get something from nothing?' There
are two origins of this obstacle: conceptual (i.e. knowledge-based) and
cultural (e.g. deeply held religious viewpoints). The article shows how the
citizenship section of the national curriculum, coming `online' in England from

Perspectives on the Missiological Legacy of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation
Upon the occasion of the 500th anniversary Martin Luther’s publication of his 95 theses, this composite article brings together five perspectives on the missiological legacy of the reformer and the subsequent Protestant Reformation. The blend of voices makes clear that Luther and the subsequent Protestant Reformation do not have a simple missiological legacy but rather various legacies: theological, ecclesiological, political, and practical; some of which co-exist, and even collide, in the same ecclesiastical community. The scandalous legacy of a splintered and splintering church remains. Yet, demonstrations of mutual recognition, reciprocal respect, and genuine fellowship can be found in certain missiological circles
