Foreword to the Special Issue: "Towards the Multilingual Web of Data"

We are pleased to introduce this special issue on the topic of “Towards theMultilingualWeb of Data”, which we feel is a timely and valuable topic in our increasingly multilingual and interconnected world. TheWeb of Data has increasingly become a space where concepts are described not only with logic and ontologies but also with linguistic information in the form of multilingual lexicons, terminologies and thesauri. In particular, this has led to the creation of a growing cloud of linguistic linked open data, which bridges the world of ontologies with dictionaries, corpora and other linguistic resources. This raises several challenges, such as ontology localization, cross-lingual question answering, cross-lingual ontology and data matching, representation of lexical information on theWeb of Data, etc. Furthermore, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning for linked data can benefit from exploiting multilingual language resources, such as annotated corpora, wordnets, bilingual dictionaries, etc., if they are themselves formally represented and linked by following the linked data principles. A critical mass of language resources as linked data on the Web are leading to a new generation of linked data-aware NLP techniques and tools which, in turn, will serve as basis for a richer, multilingualWeb..

Same traits, different variance : Item-Level Variation Within Personality Measures

The few studies that examine variability indices have not considered how they are related to a selection of psychological outcomes, so we recruited 160 participants (age M = 24.16, SD = 9.54) who completed the IPIP-HEXACO personality questionnaire and several outcome measures. Heterogenous within-subject differences in item ratings were found for every trait/facet measured, with measurement error that remained stable across the questionnaire. Within-subject standard deviations, calculated as measures of individual variation in specific item ratings within a trait/facet, were related to outcomes including life satisfaction and depression. This suggests these indices represent valid constructs of variability, and that researchers administering behavior statement trait questionnaires with outcome measures should also apply item-level variability indices.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Integrating WordNet and Wiktionary with lemon

Nowadays, there is a significant quantity of linguistic data available on the Web. However, linguistic resources are often published using proprietary formats and, as such, it can be difficult to interface with one another and they end up confined in “data silos”. The creation of web standards for the publishing of data on the Web and projects to create Linked Data have lead to interest in the creation of resources that can be published using Web principles. One of the most important aspects of “Lexical Linked Data” is the sharing of lexica and machine readable dictionaries. It is for this reason, that the lemon format has been proposed, which we briefly describe. We then consider two resources that seem ideal candidates for the Linked Data cloud, namely WordNet 3.0 and Wiktionary, a large document based dictionary. We discuss the challenges of converting both resources to lemon , and in particular for Wiktionary, the challenge of processing the mark-up, and handling inconsistencies and underspecification in the source material. Finally, we turn to the task of creating links between the two resources and present a novel algorithm for linking lexica as lexical Linked Data

Collaborative semantic editing of linked data lexica.

The creation of language resources is a time-consuming process requiring the efforts of many people. The use of resources collaboratively created by non-linguists can potentially ameliorate this situation. However, such resources often contain more errors compared to resources created by experts. For the particular case of lexica, we analyse the case of Wiktionary, a resource created along wiki principles and argue that through the use of a principled lexicon model, namely lemon, the resulting data could be better understandable to machines. We then present a platform called lemon source that supports the creation of linked lexical data along the lemon model. This tool builds on the concept of a semantic wiki to enable collaborative editing of the resources by many users concurrently. In this paper, we describe the model, the tool and present an evaluation of its usability based on a small group of users

Visual BFI: an Exploratory Study for Image-based Personality Test

This paper positions and explores the topic of image-based personality test. Instead of responding to text-based questions, the subjects will be provided a set of "choose-your-favorite-image" visual questions. With the image options of each question belonging to the same concept, the subjects' personality traits are estimated by observing their preferences of images under several unique concepts. The solution to design such an image-based personality test consists of concept-question identification and image-option selection. We have presented a preliminary framework to regularize these two steps in this exploratory study. Subjective as well as objective evaluations have demonstrated the feasibility of image-based personality test in limited questions

Seroepidemiology of group A rotavirus in suburban São Paulo, Brazil

Age-specifc patterns of rotavirus infection were investigated using a randomly selected and representative sample of sera from a suburban community of São Paulo, Brazil screened for class-specifc antibodies to group A rotavirus. Age-serology of anti-rotavirus IgG showed primary infection predominant in young infants with a median age of around 18 months consistent with IgM serology suggesting highest rates of recent infection between ages 4 and 48 months. Anti-rotavirus serum IgA prevalence increased gradually with age. Paired samples from infants, collected 1 month apart, indicated high exposure rates with seroconversion occurring in several infants during the reported low transmission season. Between 5 and 10% of adults had elevated IgM levels indicative of recent infection and, potentially, of an important contribution adults may play to rotavirus transmission. Further understanding of the dynamics of rotavirus transmission within populations, at group and serotype level, would benefit the design and monitoring of future immunization programmes

In this contribution our objective is to define term variation, analyze the state of the art, and propose a new classification of term variants according to our representation purposes in lemon, a lexiconontology model to enrich ontologies with linguistic descriptions

Budget 2002: business taxation measures

Following the 2002 Budget, this Briefing Note examines some of the Chancellor's changes to business taxation. A number of Budget measures, including the research and development tax credit for large companies and the exemption of capital gains on the sale of subsidiaries, are welcome and should improve the efficiency of the UK's tax system. All of these measures were subject to extensive prior consultation. A number of other measures were not foreshadowed in the Pre-Budget Report. Three of these are examined here - the new 0% rate of corporation tax, the changes to North Sea taxation and the new anti-avoidance measures for stamp duty

Ontology Lexicalisation: The lemon Perspective

Ontologies (Guarino1998) capture knowledge but fail to capture the structure and use of terms in expressing and referring to this knowledge in natural language. The structure and use of terms is the concern of terminology as well as lexicology. In recent years, the relevance of terminology in knowledge representation has been recognized again (for example the advent of SKOS1) but less consideration has been given to lexical and linguistic issues in knowledge representation (Buitelaar2010)
