In Situ Characterisation of Permanent Magnetic Quadrupoles for focussing proton beams
High intensity laser driven proton beams are at present receiving much
attention. The reasons for this are many but high on the list is the potential
to produce compact accelerators. However two of the limitations of this
technology is that unlike conventional nuclear RF accelerators lasers produce
diverging beams with an exponential energy distribution. A number of different
approaches have been attempted to monochromise these beams but it has become
obvious that magnetic spectrometer technology developed over many years by
nuclear physicists to transport and focus proton beams could play an important
role for this purpose. This paper deals with the design and characterisation of
a magnetic quadrupole system which will attempt to focus and transport
laser-accelerated proton beams.Comment: 20 pages, 42 figure
Composition Dependence of the Structure and Electronic Properties of Liquid Ga-Se Alloys Studied by Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulation
Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation is used to study the structure and
electronic properties of the liquid Ga-Se system at the three compositions
GaSe, GaSe and GaSe, and of the GaSe and GaSe crystals. The
calculated equilibrium structure of GaSe crystal agrees well with available
experimental data. The neutron-weighted liquid structure factors calculated
from the simulations are in reasonable agreement with recent neutron
diffraction measurements. Simulation results for the partial radial
distribution functions show that the liquid structure is closely related to
that of the crystals. A close similarity between solid and liquid is also found
for the electronic density of states and charge density. The calculated
electronic conductivity decreases strongly with increasing Se content, in

Cu-Doping Effects in CdI2Nanocrystals: The Role of Cu-Agglomerates
Cu-doping effects in CdI2nanocrystals are studied experimentally. We use the photostimulated second harmonic generation (PSSHG) as a tool to investigate the effects. It is found that the PSSHG increases with increasing Cu content up to 0.6% and then decreases due to the formation of the Cu-agglomerates. The PSSHG for the crystal with Cu content higher than 1% reduces to that for the undoped CdI2crystal. The results suggest that a crucial role of the Cu-metallic agglomerates is involved in the processes as responsible for the observed effects
Anisotropic, Intermediate Coupling Superconductivity in Cu0.03TaS2
The anisotropic superconducting state properties in Cu0.03TaS2 have been
investigated by magnetization, magnetoresistance, and specific heat
measurements. It clearly shows that Cu0.03TaS2 undergoes a superconducting
transition at TC = 4.03 K. The obtained superconducting parameters demonstrate
that Cu0.03TaS2 is an anisotropic type-II superconductor. Combining specific
heat jump = 1.6(4), gap ratio 2/kBTC = 4.0(9) and the estimated electron-phonon
coupling constant ~ 0.68, the superconductivity in Cu0.03TaS2 is explained
within the intermediate coupling BCS scenario. First-principles electronic
structure calculations suggest that copper intercalation of 2H-TaS2 causes a
considerable increase of the Fermi surface volume and the carrier density,
which suppresses the CDW fluctuation and favors the raise of TC.Comment: 16pages, 5figure
Non-stoichiometric silicon nitride for future gravitational wave detectors
Silicon nitride thin films were deposited at room temperature employing a custom ion beam deposition (IBD) system. The stoichiometry of these films was tuned by controlling the nitrogen gas flow through the ion source and a process gas ring. A correlation is established between the process parameters, such as ion beam voltage and ion current, and the optical and mechanical properties of the films based on post-deposition heat treatment. The results show that with increasing heat treatment temperature, the mechanical loss of these materials as well as their optical absorption decreases producing films with an extinction coefficient as low as k=6.2(±0.5)×10−7 at 1064 nm for samples annealed at 900 ∘C. This presents the lowest value for IBD SiN x within the context of gravitational wave detector applications. The mechanical loss of the films was measured to be ϕ=2.1(±0.6)×10−4 once annealed post deposition to 900 ∘C

Study of photo-proton reactions driven by bremsstrahlung radiation of high-intensity laser generated electrons
Photo-nuclear reactions were investigated using a high power table-top laser. The laser system at the University of Jena ( I similar to 3-5 x 10(19) W cm(-2)) produced hard bremsstrahlung photons ( kT similar to 2(9 MeV) via a laser-gas interaction which served to induce ( gamma, p) and ( gamma, n) reactions in Mg, Ti, Zn and Mo isotopes. Several ( gamma, p) decay channels were identified using nuclear activation analysis to determine their integral reaction yields
