    The vacuum energy of a scalar field in a spherically symmetric background field is considered. It is expressed through the Jost function of the corresponding scattering problem. The renormalization is discussed in detail and performed using the uniform asymptotic expansion of the Jost function.     Collision-Induced Decay of Metastable Baby Skyrmions

    Many extensions of the standard model predict heavy metastable particles which may be modeled as solitons (skyrmions of the Higgs field), relating their particle number to a winding number. Previous work has shown that the electroweak interactions admit processes in which these solitons decay, violating standard model baryon number. We motivate the hypothesis that baryon-number-violating decay is a generic outcome of collisions between these heavy particles. We do so by exploring a 2+1 dimensional theory which also possesses metastable skyrmions. We use relaxation techniques to determine the size, shape and energy of static solitons in their ground state. These solitons could decay by quantum mechanical tunneling. Classically, they are metastable: only a finite excitation energy is required to induce their decay. We attempt to induce soliton decay in a classical simulation by colliding pairs of solitons. We analyze the collision of solitons with varying inherent stabilities and varying incident velocities and orientations. Our results suggest that winding-number violating decay is a generic outcome of collisions.     Trophic Ecology of Meso- and Bathypelagic Predatory Fishes in the Gulf of Mexico

    The trophic ecology of eight circumglobal meso- and bathypelagic fishes (Anoplogaster cornuta, Chauliodus sloani, Coccorella atlantica, Gigantura chuni, G. indica, Omosudis lowii, Photostomias guernei, and Stomias affinis) with contrasting vertical migration habits (vertical migrators vs. non-migrators) were examined using stable isotope analysis (SIA). Mean δ13C values of these predators were similar among species, ranging from –18.17 to –18.99 ‰, suggesting that all species are supported by a similar carbon source. This finding was supported by mixing-model analysis; all of these deep-living predators received the majority (\u3e73%) of their carbon from epipelagic food resources. Mean δ15N values of the predators ranged from 9.18 to 11.13 ‰, resulting in trophic position estimates between the third and fourth trophic level, although significant shifts in δ15N with increasing body size suggest that some of these species undergo ontogenetic shifts in trophic position. Bayesian standard ellipses, used to estimate isotopic niche areas, differed in size among species, with those occupying the highest relative trophic positions possessing the largest isotopic niches. These results, which provide the first trophic descriptions using dietary tracers for several of these species, offer insight into the trophic structure of deep-sea ecosystems and will help inform the construction of ecosystem-based models

    We consider the breaking of the grand unification group SO(10)SO(10) to the standard model gauge group through several chains containing two intermediate stages. Using the values of the gauge coupling constants at scale MZM_Z derived from recent LEP data, we determine the range of their intermediate and unification scales.     Static solitons with non-zero Hopf number

    We investigate a generalized non-linear O(3) σ\sigma-model in three space dimensions where the fields are maps S3S2S^3 \mapsto S^2. Such maps are classified by a homotopy invariant called the Hopf number which takes integer values. The model exhibits soliton solutions of closed vortex type which have a lower topological bound on their energies. We explicitly compute the fields for topological charge 1 and 2 and discuss their shapes and binding energies.     “Dial Up and Lock In”: Asymmetric organo-Brønsted acid catalysis incorporating stable isotopes

    An operationally simple organo-Brønsted-acid-catalyzed asymmetric and regioselective “dial up and lock in” of one or more stable isotopes into organic compounds is unknown. Here, we describe a newly designed, chemically versatile protocol mediating single- or multiple-isotope incorporation into aziridines via a one-pot, three-component, two-step process. By exploiting easy-to-generate isotope-derived starting materials, it allows complete control of isotope positioning, affords >95 atom % isotope incorporation, and generates cis-aziridines with excellent optical activities and regioselectivities. Demonstrating a “low entry point,” and thus easy access to a broad range of researchers, it requires no specialist laboratory equipment and employs readily attainable reaction conditions. Demonstrating their utility, the aziridines are easily transformed into sought-after chiral non-racemic α-amino acids appended with one to three (or more) identical or different isotopes. The widespread use of these compounds ensures that our methodology will be of interest to biological, medicinal, pharmaceutical, agrochemical, biotechnology, materials, and process chemists alike

    CP Violation from Surface Terms in the Electroweak Theory without Fermions

    We consider the effect of adding a CP-odd, theta FFdual-term to the electroweak Lagrangian without fermions. This term affects neither the classical nor perturbatively quantum physics, but can be observed through non-perturbative quantum processes. We give an example of such a process by modifying the theory so that it supports Higgs-winding solitons and showing that the rates of decay of these solitons to specific final states are CP violating.     Cognitive pharmacy services at a pediatric nephrology and hypertension clinic

    Purpose: Pediatric patients require special attention from pediatric pharmacists. This is particularly true for pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) as the number of their medications and the complexity of their treatment increase with disease progression. However, there is paucity of information describing pediatric cognitive pharmacy services in this setting. The objective of this study is to identify the potential roles of a clinical pharmacist as a provider in a pediatric nephrology and hypertension clinic. Methods: Pediatric patients (≤18 years of age) who chronically took at least one medication were consecutively enrolled at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Clinic from 1 August 2007 to 15 April 2008. Demographic information and the interventions performed during the clinic visit by a clinical pharmacist were examined. Results: Three hundred and seventy-four visits made in 283 participants were evaluated. The mean (SD) number of cognitive pharmacy interventions per patient was 2.3 (1.0) on the first visit, with medication counseling and verification of current medications comprising the most common activity (85). The mean (SD) number of medications per patient was 5.7 (4.8) and of medications counseled per visit was 4.0 (3.4). Medication adherence was investigated in 141 (38) visits. Pretransplant education on medications was performed in 3 of the patients. Discrepancies of medications were discovered in 12 of the 374 visits. Conclusion: Pediatric cognitive pharmacy services to patients at the UNC pediatric nephrology clinic were feasible, which improved the quality of services and promoted better outcomes for these complex patients

    Plasma zonulin levels in childhood nephrotic syndrome

Objective: We conducted this study to test the hypothesis that plasma zonulin levels are elevated in pediatric patients with nephrotic syndrome compared to healthy controls. Study Design: Plasma zonulin levels were measured by ELISA in 114 children enrolled in the NEPTUNE study. Clinical and laboratory data were retrieved from the NEPTUNE database. Results: The median age of the patients was 10 (IQR = 5 to 14) years, 59 were male, 64 had minimal change disease, 47 focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, median eGFR was 96 (IQR = 80 to 114) ml/min/1.73 m2, and median urine protein:creatinine ratio was 0.5 (IQR = 0.1 to 3.4) (g:g). The plasma zonulin level was 14.2 ± 5.0 vs. 10.2 ± 2.5 ng/ml in healthy adults in a report using the same assay kit, P = 0.0025. These findings were confirmed in an independent cohort of children with nephrotic syndrome compared to healthy age-matched controls, P = 0.01. Zonulin concentrations did not differ in children with minimal change disease vs. focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, frequently relapsing vs. steroid-dependent vs. steroid-resistant clinical course, and were not influenced by the immunosuppressive treatment regimen. There was no relationship between plasma zonulin levels and the absolute or percentage change in proteinuria from enrollment until the time of the zonulin assay. Conclusion: Plasma zonulin levels are elevated in childhood nephrotic syndrome regardless of level of proteinuria or specific treatment. The cause of the high plasma zonulin levels and whether zonulin contributes to glomerular injury requires further study
