    This study examines the influences of economic and non-economic variables on the size of U.S. sow breeding operations using a probit model. Data from a national survey of U.S. hog operations identifying two different size categories were used in this study. Findings indicate that factors such as operations located in Delta States, climate controlled facilities, specialized operation, breeding practices, and risk attitudes toward investments influence decisions to establish breeding operations with 500 or more sows.     Factors Influencing Salaries of Agricultural Economics Professionals at Land Grant Institutions

    Research in the mid 1900s suggested that salary gaps existed between men and women in academia. Though the research helped bring attention to salary gaps, less focus was on causes of salary differences. More recent research suggested differences in salaries were based on performance. A survey was sent to agricultural economics professionals at land grant intuitions to identify the factors that influence their salaries. Results of the ordered probit model suggest that seven variables can be used to explain salaries: having attained tenure, working at an 1862 institution, the amount of grant dollars, the number of journal articles, highest academic rank and the percentage of appointment that is in administration (positive influences) and importance of family time (negative influence). While some of that work has focused on agricultural economics professionals, little research could be found specifically relating to agricultural economic professionals in federal employment. A survey was sent to known agricultural economics professionals within USDA. The data from this survey are being used for two purposes. The first is to determine whether differences exist between men and women (and between employees in different agencies) in factors that influence job choice and potential problems in the workplace.     Challenges to the implementation of in situ simulation at HEMS bases: a qualitative study of facilitators’ expectations and strategies

    Introduction Facilitators play an essential role in simulation-based training on helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) bases. There is scant literature about the barriers to the implementation of simulation training in HEMS. The purpose of this explorative interview study was to identify factors that the local facilitators anticipated would challenge the smooth implementation of the program, and their strategies to overcome these before the national implementation of in situ simulation-based training locally, and subsequently, one year after the programme was initiated, to identify the actual challenges they had indeed experienced, and their solutions to overcome these. Methods A qualitative study with semi-structured group interviews of facilitators was undertaken before and after one year of simulation-based training on all HEMS bases and one Search and Rescue base. Systematic text condensation was used to extract facilitators’ expectations and experiences. Results Facilitators identified 17 themes in the pre-study-year interviews. Pedagogical, motivational and logistical issues were amongst the dominant themes. Other key themes included management support, dedicated time for the facilitators and ongoing development of the facilitator. In the post-study-year interviews, the same themes were identified. Despite anxiety about the perceptions of, and enthusiasm for, simulation training amongst the HEMS crews, our facilitators describe increasing levels of motivation over the study period. Conclusion Facilitators prognosticated the anticipated challenges to the successful implementation of simulation-based training on HEMS bases and suggested solutions for overcoming these challenges.     Shorter but thicker: analysis of internal growth bands in shells of intertidal vs. subtidal Antarctic limpets, Nacella concinna, reflects their environmental adaptation

    The limpet Nacella concinna is a dominant macroinvertebrate along the coastal Antarctic Peninsula with two ecotypes inhabiting intertidal and subtidal areas, respectively. The ecological aim of the study was to understand whether higher stress competence and migratory energy expenses in intertidal Antarctic limpets shorten their lifetime and limit the shell growth rate compared to their sublittoral conspecific. We evaluated shell morphometry, age and internal shell growth bands in a large number of intertidal and subtidal N. concinna shells in Potter Cove, South Shetland Islands. Comparisons of their morphometrics showed that intertidal limpets are relatively shorter and less wide, and have higher shell mass, i.e. at common shell height, intertidal shells are relatively thicker and heavier than those of subtidal specimens. Internal shell growth bands showed alternating wide opaque (faster growth in summer) and thin translucent bands (slow growth in winter). The maximum age read was close to 20-years for both groups. Comparisons of von Bertalanffy growth curves showed for shell length and shell width lower growth rate k in intertidal animals than in subtidal ones associated to a great variability, with no differences in other growth constants. However, when shell height vs. age is considered, no differences were observed for any growth parameter. Curtailed variability of growth rates in the intertidal population reflects either a limitation of the food reserves or feeding time, or an energy gap for shell growth due to the costs for migratory movements and stress defense

    Environmental assessment of bioethanol from onshore grown Ulva

    PosterBesides biofuels from microalgae, an emerging interest in using macroalgae as feedstock for biofuel production is observable. Macroalgae have the advantage that they are much easier to harvest than microalgae so that the problem of low feedstock concentration does not arise. The environmental performance of bioethanol from onshore grown green algae is assessed using literature data and initial laboratory scale data. The optimized system model allows for producing an environmentally efficient biofuel in comparison to fossil fuel and bioethanol from sugar cane. Handling the co-product by substitution instead of energy allocation significantly reduced the environmental impacts of the system and resulted in environmental bonuses in several impact categories. Thus, the management of the co-product in the LCA model (energy allocation vs. substitution) is a key step in the LCA, as it highly influences the impact assessment results

    National Implementation of In Situ Simulation-Based Training in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services: A Multicenter Study

    Objective Medical simulation is used in helicopter emergency services as a tool for training the crew. Using in situ simulation, we aimed to evaluate the degree of implementation, the barriers to completing simulation training, and the crew's attitude toward this form of training. Methods This was a 1-year prospective study on simulation at all 14 Norwegian helicopter emergency services bases and 1 search and rescue base. Local facilitators were educated and conducted simulations at their discretion. Results All bases agreed to participate initially, but 1 opted out because of technical difficulties. The number of simulations attempted at each base ranged from 1 to 46 (median = 17). Regardless of the base and the number of attempted simulations, participating crews scored self-evaluated satisfaction with this form of training highly. Having 2 local facilitators increased the number of attempted simulations, whereas facilitators’ travel distance to work seemed to make no difference on the number of attempted simulations. Conclusion Our study reveals considerable differences in the number of attempted simulations between bases despite being given the same prerequisites. The busiest bases completed fewer simulations than the rest of the bases. Our findings suggest that conditions related to the local facilitator are important for the successful implementation of simulation-based training in helicopter emergency services.publishedVersio
