Flowers of Story County

Noticing that the proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science do not contain any particular enumeration of the flowers of Story County, the writer is prompted to offer the following list from the herbarium of Vene C. Gambell, who was a student at Ames during the earlier part of the decade of 1880-90. Such a list, perhaps only partial, is thus afforded the academy, and a more permanent and accessible record given the earlier work of one of the brightest young students of science in the history of the state, who, had he been permitted to round out the ordinary span of life, would, doubtless, have attained a degree of scientific success worthy of the promises of his youthful attainments

In 1922, a deep well was drilled for the City of Davenport by the McCarthy Well Company of St. Paul, Minnesota. The log of the well was a follows

Winfield\u27s Deep Well

Winfield\u27s waterworks system was installed in 1914. The supply of water was from a drilled well about sixty-five feet in depth. Its purpose was fire protection. Its installation was just in time to cut short several fires which, uncontrolled, would have been very destructive. Its cost was saved several times in this manner during the next few years

Flowering Plants of Henry County

Henry County is the second from the Mississippi River on the east and the second county north of the Missouri state line on the south, thus placing it in the southeast part of the state of Iowa

The Deep Water-Well at Brighton

The town of Brighton is situated in the southwestern part of Washington County, Iowa, and according to the census of 1920 it has a population of 1,014. During the year 1919, the town installed water works and a sewer system with six miles of ditches and a disposal plant. The supply of water was from a well about sixty feet deep. This well failed to yield a sufficient supply of water, and resort was had to the well at the canning factory. This arrangement was not altogether satisfactory, particularly during the canning season when it, too, failed to yield a sufficient supply. Finally it was decided to drill a deep well

Some of the Flowering Plants of Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana

Calcasieu Parish is the largest county in the state of Louisiana. It is about sixty miles east and west, and about fifty miles north and south, and is located in the southwestern part of the state. It adjoins Texas on the west, and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico on the south by only one intervening county. It is bounded on the north by Vernon and Rapids Parishes; on the east by St. Landry, Acadia and Vermilion Parishes; on the south by Cameron Parish; and on the west by the state of Texas. The Sabine River forms its boundary line on the west. Bayou Nezpique and the Mermenteau River from the greater part of its eastern boundary

The salesman of wallpaper is frequently asked if such a sample will fade, or is confronted with the bold assertion that such a specimen will do so. Usually, he is unable to answer the question definitely, or to deny the charge. Not having noticed any observation on the subject of the stability of colors in wallpaper, the writer was prompted to make a few tests or experiments

The second installment from this list is submitted herewith. The third installment will be found in a later issue of the proceedings of the Academy

Deep Well at Morning Sun

For several years the town of Morning Sun had depended on shallow wells for the supply of water for its system of water works. This supply was found to be insufficient in later years, and in the fall of 1923 the drilling of a deep well was begun and was completed in the earlier part of 1924.
