Dynamics of Epidemics
This article examines how diseases on random networks spread in time. The
disease is described by a probability distribution function for the number of
infected and recovered individuals, and the probability distribution is
described by a generating function. The time development of the disease is
obtained by iterating the generating function. In cases where the disease can
expand to an epidemic, the probability distribution function is the sum of two
parts; one which is static at long times, and another whose mean grows
exponentially. The time development of the mean number of infected individuals
is obtained analytically. When epidemics occur, the probability distributions
are very broad, and the uncertainty in the number of infected individuals at
any given time is typically larger than the mean number of infected

Legal Planning of Petroleum Production: Two Years of Proration
PRORATION of production of the major mid-continental oil pools in the United States has now been in general operation for well over two years. By proration the oil-producing states, acting through administrative commissions, have set production quotas for each pool as a whole and allocated these quotas among the variously owned wells within the pools. During the early part of this period,the daily output of crude was slashed from some 2,500,000 to approximately2,100,000 barrels -the overhanging weight of vast immediate potential production was largely lifted from the market -the statistical position of the industry was further improved by the withdrawal of some 70,000,000 barrels of stocks from storage -and the price of the product soared more than 500% from a dead low of a few cents to slightly over one dollar per barrel
Laser velocimetry technique applied to the Langley 0.3 meter transonic cryogenic tunnel
A low power laser velocimeter operating in the forward scatter mode was used to measure free stream mean velocities in the Langley 0.3 Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel. Velocity ranging from 51 to 235 m/s was measured. Measurements were obtained for a variety of nominal tunnel conditions: Mach numbers from 0.20 to 0.77, total temperatures from 100 to 250 K, and pressures from 101 to 152 kPa. Particles were not injected to augment the existing Mie scattering materials. Liquid nitrogen droplets were the existing liqht scattering material. Tunnel vibrations and thermal effects had no detrimental effects on the optical system

Association between daily antiretroviral pill burden and treatment adherence, hospitalisation risk, and other healthcare utilisation and costs in a US medicaid population with HIV
Objectives: Lower pill burden leads to improved antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among HIV patients. Simpler dosing regimens have not been widely explored in real-world populations. We retrospectively assessed ART adherence, all-cause hospitalisation risk and costs, and other healthcare utilisation and costs in Medicaid enrollees with HIV treated with ART as a once-daily single-tablet regimen (STR) or two or more pills per day (2+PPD). Design: Patients with an HIV diagnosis from 2005 to 2009 receiving complete ART (ie, two nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors plus a third agent) for ≥60 days as STR or 2+PPD were selected and followed until the first of (1) discontinuation of the complete ART, (2) loss of enrolment or (3) end of database. Adherence was measured using the medication possession ratio. Monthly all-cause healthcare utilisation and costs were observed from regimen initiation until follow-up end. Results: Of the 7381 patients who met inclusion criteria, 1797 were treated with STR and 5584 with 2+PPD. STR patients were significantly more likely to reach 95% adherence and had fewer hospitalisations than 2+PPD patients (both p<0.01). STR patients had mean (SD) total monthly costs of 4962); 2+PPD patients had 5811; p<0.001). Hospital costs accounted for 53.8% and pharmacy costs accounted for 32.5% of this difference. Multivariate analyses found that STR led to a 23% reduction in hospitalisations and a 17% reduction in overall healthcare costs. ART adherence appears to be a key mechanism mediating hospitalisation risk, as patients with ≥95% adherence (regardless of regimen type) had a lower hospitalisation rate compared with <95% adherence. Conclusions: While it was expected that STR patients would have lower pharmacy costs, we also found that STR patients had fewer hospitalisations and lower hospital costs than 2+PPD patients, resulting in significantly lower total healthcare costs for STR patients
Random Networks with Tunable Degree Distribution and Clustering
We present an algorithm for generating random networks with arbitrary degree
distribution and Clustering (frequency of triadic closure). We use this
algorithm to generate networks with exponential, power law, and poisson degree
distributions with variable levels of clustering. Such networks may be used as
models of social networks and as a testable null hypothesis about network
structure. Finally, we explore the effects of clustering on the point of the
phase transition where a giant component forms in a random network, and on the

The immediate early gene Egr3 Is required for hippocampal induction of Bdnf by electroconvulsive stimulation
Early growth response 3 (Egr3) is an immediate early gene (IEG) that is regulated downstream of a cascade of genes associated with risk for psychiatric disorders, and dysfunction of Egr3 itself has been implicated in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. As an activity-dependent transcription factor, EGR3 is poised to regulate the neuronal expression of target genes in response to environmental events. In the current study, we sought to identify a downstream target of EGR3 with the goal of further elucidating genes in this biological pathway relevant for psychiatric illness risk. We used electroconvulsive stimulation (ECS) to induce high-level expression of IEGs in the brain, and conducted expression microarray to identify genes differentially regulated in the hippocampus of Egr3-deficient (-/-) mice compared to their wildtype (WT) littermates. Our results replicated previous work showing that ECS induces high-level expression of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf) in the hippocampus of WT mice. However, we found that this induction is absent in Egr3-/- mice. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) validated the microarray results (performed in males) and replicated the findings in two separate cohorts of female mice. Follow-up studies of activity-dependent Bdnf exons demonstrated that ECS-induced expression of both exons IV and VI requires Egr3. In situ hybridization demonstrated high-level cellular expression of Bdnf in the hippocampal dentate gyrus following ECS in WT, but not Egr3-/-, mice. Bdnf promoter analysis revealed eight putative EGR3 binding sites in the Bdnf promoter, suggesting a mechanism through which EGR3 may directly regulate Bdnf gene expression. These findings do not appear to result from a defect in the development of hippocampal neurons in Egr3-/- mice, as cell counts in tissue sections stained with anti-NeuN antibodies, a neuron-specific marker, did not differ between Egr3-/- and WT mice. In addition, Sholl analysis and counts of dendritic spines in golgi-stained hippocampal sections revealed no difference in dendritic morphology or synaptic spine density in Egr3-/-, compared to WT, mice.
