Developing sexual competence? Exploring strategies for the provision of effective sexualities and relationships education
School-based sexualities and relationships education (SRE) offers one of the most promising means of improving young people's sexual health through developing 'sexual competence'. In the absence of evidence on whether the term holds the same meanings for young people and adults (e.g. teachers, researchers, policy-makers), the paper explores 'adult' notions of sexual competence as construed in research data and alluded to in UK Government guidance on SRE, then draws on empirical research with young people on factors that affect the contexts, motivations and outcomes of sexual encounters, and therefore have implications for sexual competence. These data from young people also challenge more traditional approaches to sexualities education in highlighting disjunctions between the content of school-based input and their reported sexual experience. The paper concludes by considering the implications of these insights for developing a shared notion of what SRE is trying to achieve and suggestions for recognition in the content and approaches to SRE.</p
Deformation and chaining of flexible shells in a nematic solvent
A micrometer-scale elastic shell immersed in a nematic liquid crystal may be
deformed by the host if the cost of deformation is comparable to the cost of
elastic deformation of the nematic. Moreover, such inclusions interact and form
chains due to quadrupolar distortions induced in the host. A continuum theory
model using finite elements is developed for this system, using mesh
regularization and dynamic refinement to ensure quality of the numerical
representation even for large deformations. From this model, we determine the
influence of the shell elasticity, nematic elasticity and anchoring condition
on the shape of the shell and hence extract parameter values from an
experimental realization. Extending the model to multi-body interactions, we
predict the alignment angle of the chain with respect to the host nematic as a
function of aspect ratio, which is found to be in excellent agreement with
experiments and greatly improves upon previous theoretical predictions.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Exchange Narrowing Effects in the EPR Linewidth of Gd Diluted in Ce Compounds
Anomalous thermal behavior on the EPR linewidths of Gd impurities diluted in
Ce compounds has been observed. In metals, the local magnetic moment EPR
linewidth, \Delta H, is expected to increase linearly with the temperature. In
contrast, in Ce_{x}La_{1-x}Os_{2} the Gd EPR spectra show a nonlinear increase.
In this work, the mechanisms that are responsible for the thermal behavior of
the EPR lines in Ce_{x}La_{1-x}Os_{2} are examined. We show that the exchange
interaction between the local magnetic moments and the conduction electrons are
responsible for the narrowing of the spectra at low temperatures. At high
temperatures, the contribution to the linewidth of the exchange interaction
between the local magnetic moments and the ions has an exponential
dependence on the excitation energy of the intermediate valent ions. A complete
fitting of the EPR spectra for powdered samples is obtained.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
The B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile toxin alters the development and antigen-presenting capacity of dendritic cells
Escherichia coli’s heat-labile enterotoxin (Etx) and its non-toxic B subunit (EtxB) have been characterized as adjuvants capable of enhancing T cell responses to co-administered antigen. Here, we investigate the direct effect of intravenously administered EtxB on the size of the dendritic and mye-loid cell populations in spleen. EtxB treatment appears to enhance the development and turnover of dendritic and myeloid cells from precursors within the spleen. EtxB treatment also gives a dendritic cell (DC) population with higher viability and lower activation status based on the reduced expression of MHC-II, CD80 and CD86. In this respect, the in vivo effect of EtxB differs from that of the highly inflammatory mediator lipopolysaccharide. In in vi-tro bone marrow cultures, EtxB treatment was also found to enhance the development of DC from precursors dependent on Flt3L. In terms of the in vivo effect of EtxB on CD4 and CD8 T cell responses in mice, the interaction of EtxB directly with DC was demonstrated following conditional deple-tion of CD11c+ DC. In summary, all results are consistent with EtxB displaying adjuvant ability by enhancing the turnover of DC in spleen, leading to newly mature myeloid and DC in spleen, thereby increasing DC capacity to perform as antigen-presenting cells on encounter with T cells
'Selling it as a holistic health provision and not just about condoms ?' Sexual health services in school settings: current models and their relationship with sex and relationships education policy and provision
In this article we discuss the findings from a recent study of UK policy and practice in relation to sexual health services for young people, based in - or closely linked with - schools. This study formed part of a larger project, completed in 2009, which also included a systematic review of international research. The findings discussed in this paper are based on analyses of interviews with 51 service managers and questionnaire returns from 205 school nurses. Four themes are discussed. First, we found three main service permutations, in a context of very diverse and uneven implementation. Second, we identified factors within the school context that shaped and often constrained service provision; some of these also have implications for sex and relationships education (SRE). Third, we found contrasting approaches to the relationship between SRE input and sexual health provision. Fourth, we identified some specific barriers that need to be addressed in order to develop 'young people friendly' services in the school context. The relative autonomy available to school head teachers and governors can represent an obstacle to service provision - and inter-professional collaboration - in a climate where, in many schools, there is still considerable ambivalence about discussing 'sex' openly. In conclusion, we identify areas worthy of further research and development, in order to address some obstacles to sexual health service and SRE provision in schools
Orbital Kondo Effect in CeLaB: Scaling Analysis
Peculiarity of the Kondo effect in CeLaB is investigated on
the basis of the scaling equations up to third order. For the case where the
- charge fluctuation enters in addition to the - one, the
effective exchange interaction becomes anisotropic with respect to the orbital
pseudospins which represent the two different orbitals in the ground
state. Because of different characteristic energies for electric and magnetic
tensors, scaling with the single Kondo temperature does not apply to physical
quantities such as the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Possibility of
a bizzare phase is pointed out where the RKKY interaction leads to the spin
ordering without orbital ordering. This phase serves as a candidate of the

Protein kinase A signalling in ' Schistosoma mansoni ' cercariae and schistosomules
Cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase/protein kinase A regulates multiple processes in eukaryotes by phosphorylating diverse cellular substrates, including metabolic and signalling enzymes, ion channels and transcription factors. Here we provide insight into protein kinase A signalling in cercariae and 24h in vitro cultured somules of the blood parasite, Schistosoma mansoni, which causes human intestinal schistosomiasis. Functional mapping of activated protein kinase A using anti-phospho protein kinase A antibodies and confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed activated protein kinase A in the central and peripheral nervous system, oral-tip sensory papillae, oesophagus and excretory system of intact cercariae. Cultured 24h somules, which biologically represent the skin-resident stage of the parasite, exhibited similar activation patterns in oesophageal and nerve tissues but also displayed striking activation at the tegument and activation in a region resembling the germinal 'stem' cell cluster. The adenylyl cyclase activator, forskolin, stimulated somule protein kinase A activation and produced a hyperkinesia phenotype. The biogenic amines, serotonin and dopamine known to be present in skin also induced protein kinase A activation in somules, whereas neuropeptide Y or [Leu31,Pro34]-neuropeptide Y attenuated protein kinase A activation. However, neuropeptide Y did not block the forskolin-induced somule hyperkinesia. Bioinformatic investigation of potential protein associations revealed 193 medium confidence and 59 high confidence protein kinase A interacting partners in S. mansoni, many of which possess putative protein kinase A phosphorylation sites. These data provide valuable insight into the intricacies of protein kinase A signalling in S. mansoni and a framework for further physiological investigations into the roles of protein kinase A in schistosomes, particularly in the context of interactions between the parasite and the host
Crystal Distortion and the Two-Channel Kondo Effect
We study a simple model of the two-channel Kondo effect in a distorted
crystal. This model is then used to investigate the interplay of the Kondo and
Jahn-Teller effects, and also the Kondo effect in an impure crystal. We find
that the Jahn-Teller interaction modifies the characteristic energy scale of
the system below which non-Fermi-liquid properties of the model become
apparent. The modified energy scale tends to zero as the limit of a purely
static Jahn-Teller effect is approached. We find also that the non-Fermi-liquid
properties of the quadrupolar Kondo effect are not stable against crystal
distortion caused by impurities.Comment: 11 page
