    Utilization of LANDSAT imagery for mapping vegetation on the millionth scale

    A series of test sites were examined to determine if the information content of the LANDSAT imagery that may be obtained of these sites is sufficient to permit their mapping according to the vegetation classification system recently published by Unesco. These sites include examples from the humid tropics, arid and semi-arid subtropics and temperature zones: Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Mindoro Island in the Philippines, Great Smoky Mountains of the southeastern United States, East Tennessee Valley, interior of Western Australia, northeastern Uganda, and south-central Kansas. The results of the experiment were presented in the form of vegetation maps and annotated images which serve to illustrate the detectability of various formations. It was concluded that, for the test sites examined, the formations of the Unesco vegetation classification can be satisfactorily distinguished on LANDSAT MSS images, especially when used as color composites and judiciously chosen as to season

    Transonic transport study: Structures and aerodynamics

    The structural and aerodynamic aspects of a general study of advanced transonic transports are presented. Aircraft designed to cruise at Mach numbers of 0.90, 0.98, and 1.15 were comparatively analyzed. The wings of all three aircraft employ supercritical sections, and the two aircraft with the highest cruise Mach numbers also employ fuselage area ruling. Structural/aerodynamic characteristics and interactions are investigated both parametrically and with the aid of an automated configuration optimization program. The effects of replacing conventional aluminum airframe structure by advanced filamentary composite (carbon/epoxy) structure receive particular attention. The methods employed in the structural/aerodynamic analysis are discussed

    Recent studies of white dwarfs in open clusters have provided new constraints on the initial - final mass relationship (IFMR) for main sequence stars with masses in the range 2.5 - 6.5 Mo. We re-evaluate the ensemble of data that determines the IFMR and argue that the IFMR can be characterised by a mean initial-final mass relationship about which there is an intrinsic scatter. We investigate the consequences of the IFMR for the observed mass distribution of field white dwarfs using population synthesis calculations. We show that while a linear IFMR predicts a mass distribution that is in reasonable agreement with the recent results from the PG survey, the data are better fitted by an IFMR with some curvature. Our calculations indicate that a significant (~28%) percentage of white dwarfs originating from single star evolution have masses in excess of ~0.8 Mo, obviating the necessity for postulating the existence of a dominant population of high-mass white dwarfs that arise from binary star mergers.Comment: 5 pages, 2 color Postscript figures.     Information flow through a model of the C. elegans klinotaxis circuit

    Understanding how information about external stimuli is transformed into behavior is one of the central goals of neuroscience. Here we characterize the information flow through a complete sensorimotor circuit: from stimulus, to sensory neurons, to interneurons, to motor neurons, to muscles, to motion. Specifically, we apply a recently developed framework for quantifying information flow to a previously published ensemble of models of salt klinotaxis in the nematode worm C. elegans. The models are grounded in the neuroanatomy and currently known neurophysiology of the worm. The unknown model parameters were optimized to reproduce the worm's behavior. Information flow analysis reveals several key principles underlying how the models operate: (1) Interneuron class AIY is responsible for integrating information about positive and negative changes in concentration, and exhibits a strong left/right information asymmetry. (2) Gap junctions play a crucial role in the transfer of information responsible for the information symmetry observed in interneuron class AIZ. (3) Neck motor neuron class SMB implements an information gating mechanism that underlies the circuit's state-dependent response. (4) The neck carries non-uniform distribution about changes in concentration. Thus, not all directions of movement are equally informative. Each of these findings corresponds to an experimental prediction that could be tested in the worm to greatly refine our understanding of the neural circuit underlying klinotaxis. Information flow analysis also allows us to explore how information flow relates to underlying electrophysiology. Despite large variations in the neural parameters of individual circuits, the overall information flow architecture circuit is remarkably consistent across the ensemble, suggesting that information flow analysis captures general principles of operation for the klinotaxis circuit
