Limits to Quantum Gravity Effects from Observations of TeV Flares in Active Galaxies
We have used data from the TeV gamma-ray flare associated with the active
galaxy Markarian 421 observed on 15 May 1996 to place bounds on the possible
energy-dependence of the speed of light in the context of an effective quantum
gravitational energy scale. The possibility of an observable time dispersion in
high energy radiation has recently received attention in the literature, with
some suggestions that the relevant energy scale could be less than the Planck
mass and perhaps as low as 10^16 GeV. The limits derived here indicate this
energy scale to be in excess of 4x10^16 GeV at the 95% confidence level. To the
best of our knowledge, this constitutes the first convincing limit on such
phenomena in this energy regime.Comment: 6 pages, including 2 figure
Role of early experience in the development of preference for low-quality food in sheep
Domestic ruminant selectivity induces floristic changes in pasturelands, risking sustainability and limiting the subsequent availability of susceptible plant species. Development of preferences for species of lower nutritional quality may help to overcome those problems. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that early experience of sheep with a low-quality food (LQF) in a nutritional enriched context increases preference for LQF in adulthood. We predicted a higher proportional consumption of LQF in experienced lambs (EL) than in inexperienced lambs (IL) in choice situations involving LQF and alternative foods. Additionally, we determined intake of LQF by EL and IL at different levels of high-quality food (HQF) availability. From 60 to 210 days of age, EL were fed in separated feed bunks mature oat hay (LQF) simultaneously with sunflower meal (SM) and corn grain (CG), whereas IL were fed alfalfa hay (HQF) simultaneously with SM and CG. After exposure, EL and IL were offered LQF in free choice situations involving alternative foods, and also at five levels of HQF availability (100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% of ad libitum intake). Proportional consumption of LQF was lower or similar in EL than IL. Intake of LQF was also lower or similar in EL than IL at all levels of HQF availability, except when the LQF was the only food available. Our results did not support the hypothesis that early experience with a LQF in a nutritional enriched context increases preference for LQF in adulthood. On the contrary, experience with LQF diminished subsequent preference for LQF in adulthood. It is proposed that, in the conditions of our study, continuous comparison between the LQF and the high-quality supplements (CG and SM) during the early exposure period lead to devaluation of LQF by EL through a simultaneous negative contrast effect.Fil: Catanese, Francisco Hernan. A characterization of varieties whose universal cover is a bounded symmetric domain without ball factors
We give two characterizations of varieties whose universal cover is a bounded symmetric domain without ball factors in terms of the existence of a holomorphic endomorphism of the tensor product of the tangent bundle with the cotangent bundle . To such a curvature type tensor \s one associates the first Mok characteristic cone , obtained by projecting on the intersection of with the space of rank 1 tensors. The simpler characterization requires that the projective scheme associated to be a finite union of projective varieties of given dimensions and codimensions in their linear spans which must be skew and generat
Correlated variability of Mkn 421 at X-ray and TeV wavelengths on timescales of hours
Mkn 421 was observed for about two days with BeppoSAX, prior to and partly
overlapping the start of a 1 week continuous exposure with ASCA in April 1998,
as part of a world-wide multiwavelength campaign. A pronounced, well defined,
flare observed in X-rays was also observed simultaneously at TeV energies by
the Whipple Observatory's 10 m gamma-ray telescope. These data provide the
first evidence that the X-ray and TeV intensities are well correlated on
time-scales of hours.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, presented at the VERITAS Workshop on the TeV
