Dasein, The Early Years: Heideggerian Reflections on Childhood
Like most philosophers, Heidegger gave little attention to childhood, but his philosophical emphasis on pre-reflective practice and understanding seems uniquely qualified to help make sense of a child’s experience and development. Moreover, it seems to me that many central Heideggerian concepts are best defended, exemplified, and articulated by bringing child development into the discussion. A Heideggerain emphasis on pre-theoretical world-involvement opens up a rich array of phenomena for studying child development, which can improve upon standard theories that have over-emphasized exclusive conditions or criteria. I begin by laying out some basic features of Heidegger’s conception of being-in-the-world as a preparation for understanding the world of the child. Then I will briefly discuss some of Heidegger’s remarks on childhood, followed by some reflections on language acquisition and the correlation of anxiety and meaning
The wear characteristics of a high power diode laser generated glaze on the ordinary Portland cement surface of concrete
The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) surface layer of concrete, which was glazed using a high power diode laser (HPDL), has been tested in order to determine the wear characteristics of the glaze. The work showed that the generation of a surface glaze resulted in the considerable enhancement of the wear characteristics over an untreated OPC surface of concrete. Within both normal and corrosive (detergent, NaOH and HNO3) environmental conditions the wear rate of the HPDL generated glaze was 3.5 mg.cm-2.h-1. In contrast, the untreated OPC surface of concrete exhibited a wear rate of 9.8 - 114.8 mg.cm-2.h-1 when exposed to the various reagents. Life assessment testing revealed that the laser glazed OPC surfaces effected an increase in actual wear life of 1.3 to 17.7 times over the untreated OPC surface of concrete, depending upon the corrosive environment. The reasons for these marked improvements in the wear resistance and wear life of the HPDL generated glaze over the untreated OPC surface of concrete can be attributed to firstly, the vitrification of the OPC surface after HPDL treatment which subsequently created a much more dense and consolidated surface, and secondly, the generation of a surface with improved microstructure and phase which is more resistant in corrosive environments
The heavy top quark and supersymmetry
Three aspects of supersymmetric theories are discussed: electroweak symmetry
breaking, the issues of flavor, and gauge unification. The heavy top quark
plays an important, sometimes dominant, role in each case. Additional
symmetries lead to extensions of the standard model which can provide an
understanding for many of the outstanding problems of particle physics. A
broken supersymmetric extension of spacetime allows electroweak symmetry
breaking to follow from the dynamics of the heavy top quark; an extension of
isospin provides a constrained framework for understanding the pattern of quark
and lepton masses; and a grand unified extension of the standard model gauge
group provides an elegant understanding of the gauge quantum numbers of the
components of a generation. Experimental signatures for each of these
additional symmetries are discussed.Comment: 60 pages, 1 ps file; lectures delivered at the 1995 SLAC Summer

Provider Education & Requirements for Opioid Prescriptions
Nationally, there has been a surge in the opioid prescription crisis with associated overdose deaths. Vermont is no exception, with increasing opioid overdose related deaths within the last 10 years. A sample (n=111) of opioid addiction patients at the Community Health Centers of Burlington (CHCB) have demonstrated that 25% have their initial use due to provider prescription. New Vermont regulations to decrease opioid prescriptions are inefficient. The goal of this project is to implement a streamlined intervention to improve provider education and comfort regarding new Vermont state opioid prescribing regulations.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1326/thumbnail.jp
