    Soil quality and farm profitability: A win-win situation

    Farmers are more likely to adopt and adapt improved soil management strategies if their efforts lead to an immediate economic benefit. An encouraging policy environment, as well as farmer organisation also stimulates the adoption of conservation practices. In Mexico, farmers are adapting their maize-based cropping systems to conservation agriculture, leading to both higher profits and soil conservation

    Participatory research: a catalyst for greater impact

    This paper discusses the notion of farmer empowerment as a primary objective of participatory research. The authors argue that agricultural technologies are adapted - not adopted – through a social and cultural process which includes the transformation of the technology. Farmer participation in agricultural research is important and necessary first of all to increase the efficiency and impact of agricultural research and technology development. This includes the identification of traits that can guide crop breeders’ work. Farmer empowerment is valuable and desirable, and while it can result from participatory research, direct empowerment per se should not be the main objective of participatory research conducted by research organizations. Of more importance is the empowerment of partner organizations and the identification of future research needs, i.e. the functional purposes of participatory approaches in agricultural research

    Editorial: Revisiting the role of business, technical and financial services in fostering rural entrepreneurship

    Over the past 15 or so years authors in Enterprise Development and Microfinance (EDM) have written extensively about the design and implementation of microfinance and its use by the poor, whether to respond to shocks and changing contexts, invest in education, or advance livelihood goals (Figure 1 overleaf). Coverage has ranged from the specifics of designing microfinance schemes, access to them by the poorest, and their impact on wellbeing and poverty. While the debate on microfinance is far from over, it is true that discussions have been more concerned with managing, saving, borrowing, and moving money, than about building viable businesses. Business development involving the poor, which in many cases focuses on rural small and medium enterprises (SMEs), requires us to address the demand for a range of services which, taken together, enhance the capacities of rural SMEs. Such services need to be affordable and reliable, and address the productive and business needs of SMEs, from small-scale processors to multi-tiered agricultural cooperatives. The issues are complex with lingering questions about how different types of service providers, from government agencies and NGOs to various private sector agents, can better design their services; and how, through adequate delivery mechanisms, the capacity and willingness of SMEs to employ such services can be strengthened. In this Editorial, we discuss some of the key issues for advancing rural entrepreneurship via improved services and provide an outlook for future discussions

The aim of this study was to assess blood aluminum concentrations (BACs) of inpatients receiving multichamber-bag (MCB) PN compared to those receiving compounded PN. Methods: available BACs were retrospectively gathered from patient charts of adult inpatients receiving PN from 2015 to 2020, and compared depending on the type of PN administered. Long-term PN patients, defined as ≥ 20 days of PN, receiving at least > 10 days of compounded PN, were compared to long-term patients receiving only MCB. Results: a total of 160 BACs were available from 110 patients. No differences were found according to type of PN (mean BAC: 3.11 ± 2.75 for MCB versus 3.58 ± 2.08 µg/L for compounded PN). Baseline total bilirubin, surgery and days with PN were related to higher BACs (coefficient: 0.30 [95 % CI, 0.18-0.42], 1.29 [95 % CI, 0.52-2.07], and 0.06 [95 % CI: 0.01-0.11], respectively). Regarding long-term PN, patients receiving only MCB (n = 21) showed lower BACs compared to the compounded PN (n = 17) [2.99 ± 1.55 versus 4.35 ± 2.17 µg/L, respectively; p < 0.05]. Conclusions: although there were no differences in BAC according to type of PN administered, in long-term PN, MCB PN was associated with lower BACs as compared to compounded PN.Antecedentes: la administración de nutrición parenteral (NP) contaminada con aluminio conduce a su acumulación. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las concentraciones de aluminio en sangre (CAS) en pacientes hospitalizados que recibieron NP elaboradas en el hospital o bolsas tricamerales. Métodos: se recogieron retrospectivamente las CAS disponibles de los pacientes hospitalizados con NP durante el período entre 2015 y 2020, comparándose los valores en función del tipo de NP administrada. Se comparan igualmente los valores de pacientes de larga duración, definida como ≥ 20 días de NP, que recibieron al menos > 10 días de NP elaborada frente aquellos de larga duración que recibieron solo NP tricameral. Resultados: se incluyeron un total de 160 CAS de 110 pacientes. No se encontraron diferencias con respecto al tipo de NP (CAS media: 3,11 ± 2,75 para la tricameral frente a 3,58 ± 2,08 µg/L para la elaborada). La bilirrubina total basal, la cirugía y los días con NP se relacionaron con un mayor valor de CAS (coeficiente: 0,30 [IC 95 %: 0,18-0,42], 1,29 [IC 95 %: 0,52-2,07] y 0,06 [IC 95 %: 0,01-0,11], respectivamente). En la NP a largo plazo, los pacientes que recibieron solo NP tricameral (n = 21) mostraron una CAS menor en comparación con el grupo que recibió al menos 10 NP elaboradas (n = 17) [2,99 ± 1,55 versus 4,35 ± 2,17 µg/L, respectivamente; p < 0,05].     Setting the agenda: Climate change adaptation and mitigation for food systems in the developing world

    New agricultural development pathways are required to meet climate change adaptation and mitigation needs in the food systems of low-income countries. A research and policy agenda is provided to indicate where innovation and new knowledge are needed. Adaptation requires identifying suitable crop varieties and livestock breeds, as well as building resilient farming and natural resources systems, institutions for famine and crop failure relief, and mechanisms for rapid learning by farmers. Mitigation requires transitioning to ‘low climate impact’ agriculture that reduces emissions while achieving food security, economic well-being and sustainability. Efficient interventions, incentives for large-scale shifts in practices, and monitoring systems are required. Integrated assessments of adaptation and mitigation are needed to better understand the synergies and trade-offs among outcomes

    Trans-disciplinary responses to climate change: lessons from rice-based systems in Asia

    Climate change will continue to have a largely detrimental impact on the agricultural sector worldwide because of predicted rising temperatures, variable rainfall, and an increase in extreme weather events. Reduced crop yields will lead to higher food prices and increased hardship for low income populations, especially in urban areas. Action on climate change is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13) and is linked to the Paris Climate Agreement. The research challenge posed by climate change is so complex that a trans-disciplinary response is required, one that brings together researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers in networks where the lines between “research” and “development” become deliberately blurred. Fostering such networks will require researchers, throughout the world, not only to work across disciplines but also to pursue new South–North and South–South partnerships incorporating policy-makers and practitioners. We use our diverse research experiences to describe the emergence of such networks, such as the Direct Seeded Rice Consortium (DSRC) in South and Southeast Asia, and to identify lessons on how to facilitate and strengthen the development of trans-disciplinary responses to climate change

    Estimating maize genetic erosion in modernized smallholder agriculture

    Replacement of crop landraces by modern varieties is thought to cause diversity loss. We studied genetic erosion in maize within a model system; modernized smallholder agriculture in southern Mexico. The local seed supply was described through interviews and in situ seed collection. In spite of the dominance of commercial seed, the informal seed system was found to persist. True landraces were rare and most informal seed was derived from modern varieties (creolized). Seed lots were characterized for agronomical traits and molecular markers. We avoided the problem of non-consistent nomenclature by taking individual seed lots as the basis for diversity inference. We defined diversity as the weighted average distance between seed lots. Diversity was calculated for subsets of the seed supply to assess the impact of replacing traditional landraces with any of these subsets. Results were different for molecular markers, ear- and vegetative/flowering traits. Nonetheless, creolized varieties showed low diversity for all traits. These varieties were distinct from traditional landraces and little differentiated from their ancestral stocks. Although adoption of creolized maize into the informal seed system has lowered diversity as compared to traditional landraces, genetic erosion was moderated by the distinct features offered by modern varieties
