    CR-39 (PADC) nuclear track detectors are among the most widespread devices used for personal neutron dosimetry; however, some issues related to the variable material quality of the CR-39 polymer hinder the performance of CR-39-based dosemeters. For this reason, the Working Group 2 (WG2) of the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has recently launched the CR-39 Quality task, a project aimed at improving and harmonising personal neutron dosimetry with CR-39 in Europe. Whitin this task, a close collaboration among researchers, individual monitoring services and dosemeter grade CR-39 manufacturers is achieved, thus facilitating the direct dialog between producer and consumer to reach an optimised material for personal neutron dosimetry applications

    The lens of the eye: exposures in the UK medical sector and mechanistic studies of radiation effects

    The recommendation from the International Commission on Radiological Protection that the occupational equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye should be reduced to 20 mSv year−1, averaged over 5 years with no year exceeding 50 mSv, has stimulated a discussion on the practicalities of implementation of this revised dose limit, and the most appropriate risk and protection framework to adopt. This brief paper provides an overview of some of the drivers behind the move to a lower recommended dose limit. The issue of implementation in the medical sector in the UK has been addressed through a small-scale survey of doses to the lens of the eye amongst interventional cardiologists and radiologists. In addition, a mechanistic study of early and late post-irradiation changes in the lens of the eye in in-vivo-exposed mice is outlined. Surveys and studies such as those described can contribute to a deeper understanding of fundamental and practical issues, and therefore contribute to a robust evidence base for ensuring adequate protection of the eye while avoiding undesirable restrictions to working practices

    On June 30th, 2016, the “First EURADOS Stakeholder Workshop” was held at the Helmholtz Center Munich (HMGU) in Neuherberg, Germany. The workshop was jointly organized by the HMGU and the EURADOS Office in conjunction with the 57th EURADOS Council meeting, which took place on June 29th and July 1st, also at the HMGU. In the frame of the “European Joint Programme for the Integration of Radiation Protection Research”, the CONCERT project funded by the European Commission is supposed to provide an umbrella structure for radiation protection research in Europe. In this project, EURADOS leads Task 2.4 on the “Development of Strategic Research Agenda, roadmap and priorities for research on dosimetry”. While a first version of the EURADOS Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) has already been published, this workshop was intended to develop the SRA further by asking for feedback and input from international organisations with interest in the dosimetry of ionizing radiation
