Swarm optimization for adaptive phase measurements with low visibility
Adaptive feedback normally provides the greatest accuracy for optical phase
measurements. New advances in nitrogen vacancy centre technology have enabled
magnetometry via individual spin measurements, which are similar to optical
phase measurements but with low visibility. The adaptive measurements that
previously worked well with high-visibility optical interferometry break down
and give poor results for nitrogen vacancy centre measurements. We use advanced
search techniques based on swarm optimisation to design better adaptive
measurements that can provide improved measurement accuracy with low-visibility
interferometry, with applications in nitrogen vacancy centre magnetometry.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, comments welcom
Signature extension for sun angle, volume 1
The author has identified the following significant results. Within a restricted zenith sun angle range of 35 - 50 degrees, it was empirically observed that canopy reflectance is mainly Lambertian. Reflectance changes with crop stage were simple shifts in scale in the sun angle range. It was noted that sun angle variations depend on canopy characteristics. Effects of the vegetative canopy were most pronounced at the larger solar zenith angles (20 %). The linear sun angle correction coefficients demonstrate a dependency on both crop stage (15-20 %) and crop type (10-20 %). The use of canopy reflectance modeling allowed for the generation of a simulated data set over an extremely broad envelope of sun angles
Nodal domain distributions for quantum maps
The statistics of the nodal lines and nodal domains of the eigenfunctions of
quantum billiards have recently been observed to be fingerprints of the
chaoticity of the underlying classical motion by Blum et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett.,
Vol. 88 (2002), 114101) and by Bogomolny and Schmit (Phys. Rev. Lett., Vol. 88
(2002), 114102). These statistics were shown to be computable from the random
wave model of the eigenfunctions. We here study the analogous problem for
chaotic maps whose phase space is the two-torus. We show that the distributions
of the numbers of nodal points and nodal domains of the eigenvectors of the
corresponding quantum maps can be computed straightforwardly and exactly using
random matrix theory. We compare the predictions with the results of numerical
computations involving quantum perturbed cat maps.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Second version: minor correction
Assessing the performance of protective winter covers for outdoor marble statuary: pilot investigation
Outdoor statuary in gardens and parks in temperate climates has a tradition of being covered during the winter, to protect against external conditions. There has been little scientific study of the environmental protection that different types of covers provide. This paper examines environmental conditions provided by a range of covers used to protect marble statuary at three sites in the UK. The protection required depends upon the condition of the marble. Although statues closely wrapped and with a layer of insulation provide good protection, this needs to be considered against the potential physical damage of close wrapping a fragile deteriorated surface
Charge order in Magnetite. An LDA+ study
The electronic structure of the monoclinic structure of FeO is
studied using both the local density approximation (LDA) and the LDA+. The
LDA gives only a small charge disproportionation, thus excluding that the
structural distortion should be sufficient to give a charge order. The LDA+
results in a charge disproportion along the c-axis in good agreement with the
experiment. We also show how the effective can be calculated within the
augmented plane wave methods
Nonclassical Degrees of Freedom in the Riemann Hamiltonian
The Hilbert-Polya conjecture states that the imaginary parts of the zeros of
the Riemann zeta function are eigenvalues of a quantum hamiltonian. If so,
conjectures by Katz and Sarnak put this hamiltonian in Altland and Zirnbauer's
universality class C. This implies that the system must have a nonclassical
two-valued degree of freedom. In such a system, the dominant primitive periodic
orbits contribute to the density of states with a phase factor of -1. This
resolves a previously mysterious sign problem with the oscillatory
contributions to the density of the Riemann zeros.Comment: 4 pages, no figures; v3-6 have minor corrections to v2, v2 has a more

The design of digital-adaptive controllers for VTOL aircraft
Design procedures for VTOL automatic control systems have been developed and are presented. Using linear-optimal estimation and control techniques as a starting point, digital-adaptive control laws have been designed for the VALT Research Aircraft, a tandem-rotor helicopter which is equipped for fully automatic flight in terminal area operations. These control laws are designed to interface with velocity-command and attitude-command guidance logic, which could be used in short-haul VTOL operations. Developments reported here include new algorithms for designing non-zero-set-point digital regulators, design procedures for rate-limited systems, and algorithms for dynamic control trim setting
Modern digital flight control system design for VTOL aircraft
Methods for and results from the design and evaluation of a digital flight control system (DFCS) for a CH-47B helicopter are presented. The DFCS employed proportional-integral control logic to provide rapid, precise response to automatic or manual guidance commands while following conventional or spiral-descent approach paths. It contained altitude- and velocity-command modes, and it adapted to varying flight conditions through gain scheduling. Extensive use was made of linear systems analysis techniques. The DFCS was designed, using linear-optimal estimation and control theory, and the effects of gain scheduling are assessed by examination of closed-loop eigenvalues and time responses
Adiabatic pumping in a Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor weak link
We present a formalism to study adiabatic pumping through a superconductor -
normal - superconductor weak link. At zero temperature, the pumped charge is
related to the Berry phase accumulated, in a pumping cycle, by the Andreev
bound states. We analyze in detail the case when the normal region is short
compared to the superconducting coherence length. The pumped charge turns out
to be an even function of the superconducting phase difference. Hence, it can
be distinguished from the charge transferred due to the standard Josephson
effect.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; Fig. 2 replaced, minor changes in the tex
