Assessment of the Fluorescence and Auger Data Base used in Plasma Modeling
We have investigated the accuracy of the 1s-vacancy fluorescence data base of
Kaastra & Mewe (1993, A&AS, 97, 443) resulting from the initial atomic physics
calculations and the subsequent scaling along isoelectronic sequences. In
particular, we have focused on the relatively simple Be-like and F-like
1s-vacancy sequences. We find that the earlier atomic physics calculations for
the oscillator strengths and autoionization rates of singly-charged B II and Ne
II are in sufficient agreement with our present calculations. However, the
substantial charge dependence of these quantities along each isoelectronic
sequence, the incorrect configuration averaging used for B II, and the neglect
of spin-orbit effects (which become important at high-Z) all cast doubt on the
reliability of the Kaastra & Mewe data for application to plasma modeling.Comment: 19 pages with 6 figures, AAS TeX, accepted for publication in Ap
High Reynolds number tests of the CAST 10-2/DOA 2 airfoil in the Langley 0.3-meter transonic cryogenic tunnel, phase 1
A wind tunnel investigation of an advanced technology airfoil, the CAST 10-2/DOA 2, was conducted in the Langley 0.3 meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (0.3 m TCT). This was the first of a series of tests conducted in a cooperative National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Deutsche Forschungs- und Versuchsanstalt fur Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V. (DFVLR) airfoil research program. Test temperature was varied from 280 K to 100 K to pressures from slightly above 1 to 5.8 atmospheres. Mach number was varied from 0.60 to 0.80, and the Reynolds number (based on airfoil chord) was varied from 4 x 10 to the 8th power to 45 x 10 to the 6th power. This report presents the experimental aerodynamic data obtained for the airfoil and includes descriptions of the airfoil model, the 0.3 m TCT, the test instrumentation, and the testing procedures
Some characteristics of the solar flare event of February 16, 1984
In the morning of February 16, 1984 a solar cosmic ray event (GLE) was recorded by the world wide network of neutron monitors (NM). The counting rate vs. time profile of the Goose Bay NM (geog. lat. = 53.3 deg. N, deog. long. = 299.6 deg E) where the increase is expressed as percent of the counting rate of an equatorial sea level NM is presented. The Goose Bay NM was observed to have the maximum response to the solar particles. Its counting rate vs. time profile exhibits a rapid increase to maximum, has a large amplitude (approx. 170%) and decays rapidly to background in approx. 90 min. In Fig. 1 we also show the counting rate vs. time profile for the Tixie Bay NM (71.6 deg, 128.9 deg) which recorded an increase of only a few percent. Since the NMs at Goose Bay and Tixie Bay have asymptotic viewing directions approx. 180 deg apart in longitude, the anisotropy of the solar particle flux at Earth from these stations
Ferromagnetic imprinting of spin polarization in a semiconductor
We present a theory of the imprinting of the electron spin coherence and
population in an n-doped semiconductor which forms a junction with a
ferromagnet. The reflection of non-equilibrium semiconductor electrons at the
interface provides a mechanism to manipulate the spin polarization vector. In
the case of unpolarized excitation, this ballistic effect produces spontaneous
electron spin coherence and nuclear polarization in the semiconductor, as
recently observed by time-resolved Faraday rotation experiments. We investigate
the dependence of the spin reflection on the Schottky barrier height and the
doping concentration in the semiconductor and suggest control mechanisms for

Lunar particle shadows and boundary layer experiment: Plasma and energetic particles on the Apollo 15 and 16 subsatellites
The lunar particle shadows and boundary layer experiments aboard the Apollo 15 and 16 subsatellites and scientific reduction and analysis of the data to date are discussed with emphasis on four major topics: solar particles; interplanetry particle phenomena; lunar interactions; and topology and dynamics of the magnetosphere at lunar orbit. The studies of solar and interplanetary particles concentrated on the low energy region which was essentially unexplored, and the studies of lunar interaction pointed up the transition from single particle to plasma characteristics. The analysis concentrated on the electron angular distributions as highly sensitive indicators of localized magnetization of the lunar surface. Magnetosphere experiments provided the first electric field measurements in the distant magnetotail, as well as comprehensive low energy particle measurements at lunar distance
Quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases with large scattering length
Bose gases confined in highly-elongated harmonic traps are investigated over
a wide range of interaction strengths using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We
find that the properties of a Bose gas under tight transverse confinement are
well reproduced by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions. We point
out the existence of a unitary regime, where the properties of the quasi-1d
Bose gas become independent of the actual value of the 3d scattering length. In
this unitary regime, the energy of the system is well described by a hard rod
equation of state. We investigate the stability of quasi-1d Bose gases with
positive and negative 3d scattering length.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Film calibration for the Skylab/ATM S-056 X-ray telescope
The sensitometry and film calibration effort for the Skylab/ATM S-056 X-ray telescope is summarized. The apparatus and procedures used are described together with the two types of flight film used, Kodak SO-212 and SO-242. The sensitometry and processing of the flight film are discussed, and the results are presented in the form of the characteristic curves and related data. The use of copy films is also discussed

A nationwide survey of pharmacy students’ knowledge and perceptions regarding medical cannabis
Objective
The primary objective of this study was to compare knowledge and perceptions of medical cannabis (MC) between pharmacy students who attended schools where MC was legal and illegal.
Design
A nationwide anonymous survey regarding MC was distributed to pharmacy students. The survey consisted of the following sections: (1) demographics and personal factors, (2) knowledge assessment of indications and adverse effects of MC, and (3) perceptions assessment.
Setting and participants
Equal numbers of pharmacy schools were selected and sent surveys based on geographical regions, private versus public universities, and the state’s legal status of MC for first through fourth-year pharmacy students to complete.
Outcome measures
Student knowledge of MC indications and adverse effects were treated as quizzes. Median percentage correct and whether students passed the quizzes (≥ 70%) were evaluated based on the state’s legal status. Students’ perceptions were similarly compared.
Results
A total of 629 students accessed the survey. Most students who completed the survey attended pharmacy schools where MC was illegal (55%), were female (68%), and had personally tried cannabis (53%). Overall, 91% of students believed that MC should be legalized nationally. A low number of students correctly identify approved indications with 14.8% of students in states with MC legalization scoring greater than 70% compared with 15.9% of students in states without MC legalization (P = 0.748). Similar findings were seen in the side effects quiz with only 6.1% of students in states with legal MC scoring greater than 70% compared with 7.4% of students where MC is illegal (P = 0.569) There were minimal differences in students’ perceptions of MC based on the states’ legal status.
Conclusion
Our study continues to highlight that pharmacy students lack knowledge and preparation to counsel and educate on MC. With increasing state legalizations, pharmacy schools need to address this knowledge gap to ensure optimal patient care
