Temperature dependence of species concentrations near the substrate during diamond chemical vapor deposition
Measurements have been made of the temperature dependence of CH3, CH4, and C2H2 very near the substrate during filament-assisted diamond growth. CH3 was detected using (2+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), and CH4 and C2H2 concentrations were measured using sampling mass spectrometry. A strong dependence of the CH3 REMPI signal on substrate temperature was observed, which at low temperatures may be characterized as having an activation energy of approximately 4±1 kcal/mole. Methane and acetylene, on the other hand, are relatively independent of substrate temperature. These results are most likely due to recombination of methyl to methane or ethane in the cool gas layer near the substrate or on the surface at low substrate temperatures

Influence of design parameters on occurence of oil whirl
Oil whirl instability is a serious problem in oil lubricated journal bearings. The phenomenon is characterized by a subsynchronous vibration of the journal within the bush and is particularly apparent in turbogenerators, aeroengines and electric motors. A review is presented of previous papers on the subject of oil whirl, and a simple theory is described which was used to aid the design of an oil whirl test rig. Predictions of the onset of oil whirl made by the theory presented were found to agree with those of previous researchers. They showed that increasing the shaft flexibility, or the lubricant viscosity, and decreasing the bearing radial clearance tended to reduce the oil whirl onset speed thus making the system more unstable
Spaceborne CO2 laser communications systems
Projections of the growth of earth-sensing systems for the latter half of the 1980's show a data transmission requirement of 300 Mbps and above. Mission constraints and objectives lead to the conclusion that the most efficient technique to return the data from the sensing satellite to a ground station is through a geosynchronous data relay satellite. Of the two links that are involved (sensing satellite to relay satellite and relay satellite to ground), a laser system is most attractive for the space-to-space link. The development of CO2 laser systems for space-to-space applications is discussed with the completion of a 300 Mpbs data relay receiver and its modification into a transceiver. Measurement of the half-life of 198Au in a non-metal: High-precision measurement shows no host-material dependence
We have measured the half-life of the beta decay of 198Au to be 2.6948(9) d,
with the nuclide sited in an insulating environment. Comparing this result with
the half-life we measured previously with a metallic environment, we find the
half-lives in both environments to be the same within 0.04%, thus contradicting
a prediction that screening from a "plasma" of quasi-free electrons in a metal
increases the half-life by as much as 7%
Kinetic energy functional for Fermi vapors in spherical harmonic confinement
Two equations are constructed which reflect, for fermions moving
independently in a spherical harmonic potential, a differential virial theorem
and a relation between the turning points of kinetic energy and particle
densities. These equations are used to derive a differential equation for the
