Conceptual design studies of candidate V/STOL lift fan commercial short haul transport for 1980 - 1985 V/STOL lift fan study
Conceptual designs of V/STOL lift fan commercial short haul transport aircraft for the 1980-85 time period were studied to determine their technical and economic feasibility. The engine concepts included both integral and remote fans. The scope of the study included definition of the hover control concept for each propulsion system, aircraft design, aircraft mass properties, cruise performance, noise and ride qualities evaluation. Economic evaluating was also studied on a basis of direct operating costs and route structure
Choreography, controversy and child sex abuse: Theoretical reflections on a cultural criminological analysis of dance in a pop music video
This article was inspired by the controversy over claims of ‘pedophilia!!!!’ undertones and the ‘triggering’ of memories of childhood sexual abuse in some viewers by the dance performance featured in the music video for Sia’s ‘Elastic Heart’ (2015). The case is presented for acknowledging the hidden and/or overlooked presence of dance in social scientific theory and cultural studies and how these can enhance and advance cultural criminological research. Examples of how these insights have been used within other disciplinary frameworks to analyse and address child sex crime and sexual trauma are provided, and the argument is made that popular cultural texts such as dance in pop music videos should be regarded as significant in analysing and tracing public perceptions and epistemologies of crimes such as child sex abuse
Documentary criminology: Girl Model as a case study
Visual and cultural criminology are integrated with documentary filmmaking to develop a theoretically grounded, practice-based approach called ‘documentary criminology’. The first section establishes the need for documentary filmmaking in criminology and outlines methodological opportunities. The second section examines theoretically the aesthetics and substance of documentary criminology. The third section takes the film Girl Model (Redmon and Sabin, 2011) as a case study to demonstrate how documentary criminology embedded in lived experience (in this case, the experience of scouts that recruit young Russian girls, purportedly for the modelling industry) can depict sensuous immediacy. The final section contrasts the aesthetic and ethical consequences of documentary criminology within Carrabine’s (2012, 2014) concept of ‘just’ images to a documentary filmmaking approach that remains interpretively open-ended. Residual absorption at zero temperature in d-wave superconductors
In a d-wave superconductor with elastic impurity scattering, not all the
available optical spectral weight goes into the condensate at zero temperature,
and this leads to residual absorption. We find that for a range of impurity
parameters in the intermediate coupling regime between Born (weak) and unitary
(strong) limit, significant oscillator strength remains which exhibits a cusp
like behavior of the real part of the optical conductivity with upward
curvature as a function of frequency, as well as a quasilinear temperature
dependence of the superfluid density. The calculations offer an explanation of
recent data on ortho-II YBaCuO which has been considered

Frequency Dependent Viscosity Near the Critical Point: The Scale to Two Loop Order
The recent accurate measurements of Berg, Moldover and Zimmerli of the
viscoelastic effect near the critical point of xenon has shown that the scale
factor involved in the frequency scaling is about twice the scale factor
obtained theoretically. We show that this discrepancy is a consequence of using
first order perturbation theory. Including two loop contribution goes a long

Suppression of Raf-1 kinase activity and MAP kinase signalling by RKIP
Raf-1 phosphorylates and activates MEK-1, a kinase that activates the extracellular signal regulated kinases (ERK). This kinase cascade controls the proliferation and differentiation of different cell types. Here we describe a Raf-1-interacting protein, isolated using a yeast two-hybrid screen. This protein inhibits the phosphorylation and activation of MEK by Raf-1 and is designated RKIP (Raf kinase inhibitor protein). In vitro, RKIP binds to Raf-1, MEK and ERK, but not to Ras. RKIP co-immunoprecipitates with Raf-1 and MEK from cell lysates and colocalizes with Raf-1 when examined by confocal microscopy. RKIP is not a substrate for Raf-1 or MEK, but competitively disrupts the interaction between these kinases. RKIP overexpression interferes with the activation of MEK and ERK, induction of AP-1-dependent reporter genes and transformation elicited by an oncogenically activated Raf-1 kinase. Downregulation of endogenous RKIP by expression of antisense RNA or antibody microinjection induces the activation of MEK-, ERK- and AP-1-dependent transcription. Many-body aspects of positron annihilation in the electron gas
We investigate positron annihilation in electron liquid as a case study for
many-body theory, in particular the optimized Fermi Hypernetted Chain (FHNC-EL)
method. We examine several approximation schemes and show that one has to go up
to the most sophisticated implementation of the theory available at the moment
in order to get annihilation rates that agree reasonably well with experimental
data. Even though there is basically just one number to look at, the
electron-positron pair distribution function at zero distance, it is exactly
this number that dictates how the full pair distribution behaves: In most
cases, it falls off monotonously towards unity as the distance increases. Cases
where the electron-positron pair distribution exhibits a dip are precursors to
the formation of bound electron--positron pairs. The formation of
electron-positron pairs is indicated by a divergence of the FHNC-EL equations,
from this we can estimate the density regime where positrons must be localized.
This occurs in our calculations in the range 9.4 <= r_s <=10, where r_s is the

Genetic studies of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus: lack of association with seven genetic markers
Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, a disease of complex aetiology, has been reported to be nonrandomly associated with several polymorphic markers in human populations. These data, plus evidence of a high prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus in American Indians and mixed populations, such as Mexican-Americans, which is only partially attributable to the prevalence of obesity in these populations, makes it imperative that the nature of such associations be clarified in relation to genetic susceptibility to Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The present paper reports the results of tests of association between Type 2 diabetes mellitus and seven polymorphic markers: the blood groups - ABO, Rhesus, Duffy and Kell (K and KP) - haptoglobin and group specific component; among Anglo and Hispanic populations in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, USA. The sample population consisted of 788 individuals of which 398 were Anglo subjects (97 Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 301 normal individuals) and 390 Hispanic subjects (191 Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 199 normal individuals). Association between Type 2 diabetes mellitus and genetic markers in patients was tested using the G2 statistic within each ethnic class using normal frequencies as a comparison. Results of the tests indicated that only the Kell blood group was significantly associated with Type 2 diabetes mellitus at a 5% level among the Anglo subjects (G2=5.16, 1df). This significant value can be explained by chance alone, if multiple comparisons are taken into account. Our tests have not shown the previously reported haptoglobin or Rhesus blood group associations seen in Mexican-Americans in San Antonio, Texas
