Leaving College: Why Students Withdrew from a University
The purpose of this study was to determine the reasons why students withdrew during a semester from a mid-sized, comprehensive university located in the Midwest. Six hundred forty-five students were asked to complete the ACT Withdrawing/Non-returning Student Survey during the 1992-93 academic year and summer semester. Three hundred sixty-five completed surveys were returned for a 57% response rate.
Respondents indicated many different reasons for leaving which varied by year in school and whether or not the respondent was a graduate or undergraduate student. There was no typical withdrawing student and there were many reasons students withdrew over which the university has little or no control. The report concludes with a discussion of Vincent Tinto\u27s (1993) ideas concerning institutional departure.
The retention and persistence of students in higher education has been the focus of serious intellectual inquiry for many years. Various concepts of institutional departure, persistence and models for programmatic interventions to reduce departure have been developed. (For example, see Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991; Stage & Rushin, 1993; Steele, Kennedy, & Gordon, 1993; Tinto, 1993; Wolfe, 1993.) The purpose of this study was to focus on one aspect of student attrition, and. to investigate the reasons and general trends as . to why students withdrew during a semester from a midsized comprehensive university located in the Midwest. This information could then be used to guide institutional action
Tethered Ru(II) catalysts containing a RuâI bond
Two new iodide-containing derivatives of the widely-adopted arene/Ru(II)/TsDPEN catalysts have been prepared and fully characterised, including through X-ray crystallography. They have been evaluated as catalysts for the asymmetric reduction of acetophenone under both transfer (ATH) and pressure hydrogenation (AH) conditions. The iodide-containing complexes are equally efficient in the ATH reaction, but less active in the AH reaction compared to the chloride derivatives

Optically pure heterobimetallic helicates from self-assembly and click strategies
Single diastereomer, diamagnetic, octahedral Fe(II) tris chelate complexes are synthesised that contain three pendant pyridine proligands pre-organised for coordination to a second metal. They bind Cu(I) and Ag(I) with coordination geometry depending on the identity of the metal and the detail of the ligand structure, but for example homohelical (ÎFe,ÎCu) configured systems with unusual trigonal planar Cu cations are formed exclusively in solution as shown by VT-NMR and supported by DFT calculations. Similar heterobimetallic tris(triazole) complexes are synthesised via clean CuAAC reactions at a tris(alkynyl) complex, although here the configurations of the two metals differ (ÎFe,ÎCu), leading to the first optically pure heterohelicates. A second series of Fe complexes perform less well in either strategy as a result of lack of preorganisation
Fan-Slicer: A Pycuda Package for Fast Reslicing of Ultrasound Shaped Planes
Fan-Slicer (https://github.com/UCL/fan-slicer) is a Python package that enables the fast sampling (slicing) of 2D ultrasound-shaped images from a 3D volume. To increase sampling speed, CUDA kernel functions are used in conjunction with the Pycuda package. The main features include functions to generate images from both 3D surface models and 3D volumes. Additionally, the package also allows for the sampling of images from curvilinear (fan shaped planes) and linear (rectangle shaped planes) ultrasound transducers. Potential uses of Fan-slicer include the generation of large datasets of 2D images from 3D volumes and the simulation of intra-operative data among others

Eguchi-Hanson Solitons in Odd Dimensions
We present a new class of solutions in odd dimensions to Einstein's equations
containing either a positive or negative cosmological constant. These solutions
resemble the even-dimensional Eguchi-Hanson-(A)dS metrics, with the added
feature of having Lorentzian signatures. They are asymptotic to
(A)dS. In the AdS case their energy is negative relative to that of
pure AdS. We present perturbative evidence in 5 dimensions that such metrics
are the states of lowest energy in their asymptotic class, and present a
conjecture that this is generally true for all such metrics. In the dS case
these solutions have a cosmological horizon. We show that their mass at future

In this paper we study symmetry reductions of a class of nonlinear fourth

equation may be thought of as a fourth order analogue of a generalization of
the Camassa-Holm equation, about which there has been considerable recent
interest. Further equation (1) is a ``Boussinesq-type'' equation which arises
as a model of vibrations of an anharmonic mass-spring chain and admits both
``compacton'' and conventional solitons. A catalogue of symmetry reductions for
equation (1) is obtained using the classical Lie method and the nonclassical
method due to Bluman and Cole. In particular we obtain several reductions using
the nonclassical method which are no} obtainable through the classical method
