The Photometric Period and Variability of the Cataclysmic Variable V849 Herculis (PG 1633+115)
We report time-resolved photometry of the cataclysmic variable V849 Her, and
measure a period of 0.1414 \pm 0.0030 days (3.394 \pm 0.072 hours). We also
present photometry taken over several weeks in 2010 and 2011, as well as light
curves from 1995 to 2011 by the American Association of Variable Star
Observers. The spectra, absolute magnitude derived from infrared magnitudes,
and variability all suggest that V849 Her is a nova-like variable. The shallow
(0.5-magnitude) low states we observe resemble the erratic low states of the VY
Sculptoris stars, although they may recur quasi-periodically over an average
cycle of 12.462 \pm 0.074 days.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in New Astronom
Reply to Comment on "Criterion that Determines the Foldability of Proteins"
We point out that the correlation between folding times and in protein-like heteropolymer models where
and are the collapse and folding transition temperatures
was already established in 1993 before the other presumed equivalent criterion
(folding times correlating with alone) was suggested. We argue that the
folding times for these models show no useful correlation with the energy gap
even if restricted to the ensemble of compact structures as suggested by
Karplus and Shakhnovich (cond-mat/9606037).Comment: 6 pages, Latex, 2 Postscript figures. Plots explicitly showing the

Energy Landscape and Global Optimization for a Frustrated Model Protein
The three-color (BLN) 69-residue model protein was designed to exhibit frustrated folding. We investigate the energy landscape of this protein using disconnectivity graphs and compare it to a Go model, which is designed to reduce the frustration by removing all non-native attractive interactions. Finding the global minimum on a frustrated energy landscape is a good test of global optimization techniques, and we present calculations evaluating the performance of basin-hopping and genetic algorithms for this system.Comparisons are made with the widely studied 46-residue BLN protein. We show that the energy landscape of the 69-residue BLN protein contains several deep funnels, each of which corresponds to a different β-barrel structure
Non-clasical Nucleation in Supercooled Nickel
The dynamics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of crystalline nickel from
the super-cooled melt is examined during rapid quenching using molecular
dynamics and a modified embedded atom method potential. The character of the
critical nuclei of the crystallization transition is examined using common
neighbor analysis and visualization. At nucleation the saddle point droplet
consists of randomly stacked planar structures with an in plane triangular
order. These results are consistent with previous theoretical results that
predict that the nucleation process in some metals is non-classical due to the
presence of long-range forces and a spinodal.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Sequence Dependence of Self-Interacting Random Chains
We study the thermodynamic behavior of the random chain model proposed by
Iori, Marinari and Parisi, and how this depends on the actual sequence of
interactions along the chain. The properties of randomly chosen sequences are
compared to those of designed ones, obtained through a simulated annealing
procedure in sequence space. We show that the transition to the folded phase
takes place at a smaller strength of the quenched disorder for designed
sequences. As a result, folding can be relatively fast for these sequences.Comment: 14 pages, uuencoded compressed postscript fil
Folding, Design and Determination of Interaction Potentials Using Off-Lattice Dynamics of Model Heteropolymers
We present the results of a self-consistent, unified molecular dynamics study
of simple model heteropolymers in the continuum with emphasis on folding,
sequence design and the determination of the interaction parameters of the
effective potential between the amino acids from the knowledge of the native
states of the designed sequences.Comment: 8 pages, 3 Postscript figures, uses RevTeX. Submitted to Physical

Thermal expansion in small metal clusters and its impact on the electric polarizability
The thermal expansion coefficients of clusters with and , and
are obtained from {\it ab initio} Born-Oppenheimer LDA molecular dynamics.
Thermal expansion of small metal clusters is considerably larger than that in
the bulk and size-dependent. We demonstrate that the average static electric
dipole polarizability of Na clusters depends linearly on the mean interatomic
distance and only to a minor extent on the detailed ionic configuration when
the overall shape of the electron density is enforced by electronic shell
effects. The polarizability is thus a sensitive indicator for thermal
expansion. We show that taking this effect into account brings theoretical and
experimental polarizabilities into quantitative agreement.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, one table. Accepted for publication in Physical

Partisan Asymmetries in Online Political Activity
We examine partisan differences in the behavior, communication patterns and
social interactions of more than 18,000 politically-active Twitter users to
produce evidence that points to changing levels of partisan engagement with the
American online political landscape. Analysis of a network defined by the
communication activity of these users in proximity to the 2010 midterm
congressional elections reveals a highly segregated, well clustered partisan
community structure. Using cluster membership as a high-fidelity (87% accuracy)
proxy for political affiliation, we characterize a wide range of differences in
the behavior, communication and social connectivity of left- and right-leaning
Twitter users. We find that in contrast to the online political dynamics of the
2008 campaign, right-leaning Twitter users exhibit greater levels of political
activity, a more tightly interconnected social structure, and a communication
network topology that facilitates the rapid and broad dissemination of
political information.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 6 table
The QUEST RR Lyrae Survey: Confirmation of the Clump at 50 kpc and Other Over-Densities in the Outer Halo
We have measured the periods and light curves of 148 RR Lyrae variables from
V=13.5 to 19.7 from the first 100 sq. degrees of the QUEST RR Lyrae survey.
Approximately 55% of these stars belong to the clump of stars detected earlier
by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. According to our measurements, this feature
has ~10 times the background density of halo stars, spans at least 37.5 deg by
3.5 deg in right ascension and declination (>=30 by >=3 kpc), lies ~50 kpc from
the Sun, and has a depth along the line of sight of ~5 kpc (1 sigma). These
properties are consistent with the recent models that suggest it is a tidal
stream from the Sgr dSph galaxy. The mean period of the type ab variables, 0.58
d, is also consistent. In addition, we have found two smaller over-densities in
the halo, one of which may be related to the globular cluster Pal 5.Comment: 12 pages (including 4 figures). Accepted for publication in the ApJ
