Investigation of Tantalum Wet Slug Capacitor Failures in the Apollo Telescope Mount Charger Battery Regulator Modules
This investigation describes the capacitor failures and to identify the cause of the failure mechanism. Early failures were thought to have happened because of age and/or abuse since the failed capacitors were dated 1967. It is shown that all 1967 capacitors were replaced with 1972 capacitors

Evidence of magnetic field quenching of phosphorous-doped silicon quantum dots
We present data on the electrical transport properties of highly-doped
silicon-on-insulator quantum dots under the effect of pulsed magnetic fields up
to 48 T. At low field intensities, B<7 T, we observe a strong modification of
the conductance due to the destruction of weak localization whereas at higher
fields, where the magnetic field length becomes comparable to the effective
Bohr radius of phosphorous in silicon, a strong decrease in conductance is
demonstrated. Data in the high and low electric field bias regimes are then
compared to show that close to the Coulomb blockade edge magnetically-induced
quenching to single donors in the quantum dot is achieved at about 40 T.Comment: accepted for publication at Current Applied Physic
A review of data visualization: opportunities in manufacturing sequence management.
Data visualization now benefits from developments in technologies that offer innovative ways of presenting complex data. Potentially these have widespread application in communicating the complex information domains typical of manufacturing sequence management environments for global enterprises. In this paper the authors review the visualization functionalities, techniques and applications reported in literature, map these to manufacturing sequence information presentation requirements and identify the opportunities available and likely development paths. Current leading-edge practice in dynamic updating and communication with suppliers is not being exploited in manufacturing sequence management; it could provide significant benefits to manufacturing business. In the context of global manufacturing operations and broad-based user communities with differing needs served by common data sets, tool functionality is generally ahead of user application
Desorption From Interstellar Ices
The desorption of molecular species from ice mantles back into the gas phase
in molecular clouds results from a variety of very poorly understood processes.
We have investigated three mechanisms; desorption resulting from H_2 formation
on grains, direct cosmic ray heating and cosmic ray induced photodesorption.
Whilst qualitative differences exist between these processes (essentially
deriving from the assumptions concerning the species-selectivity of the
desorption and the assumed threshold adsorption energies, E_t) all three
processes are found to be potentially very significant in dark cloud
conditions. It is therefore important that all three mechanisms should be
considered in studies of molecular clouds in which freeze-out and desorption
are believed to be important.
Employing a chemical model of a typical static molecular core and using
likely estimates for the quantum yields of the three processes we find that
desorption by H_2 formation probably dominates over the other two mechanisms.
However, the physics of the desorption processes and the nature of the dust
grains and ice mantles are very poorly constrained. We therefore conclude that
the best approach is to set empirical constraints on the desorption, based on
observed molecular depletions - rather than try to establish the desorption
efficiencies from purely theoretical considerations. Applying this method to
one such object (L1689B) yields upper limits to the desorption efficiencies

Bessel processes, the Brownian snake and super-Brownian motion
We prove that, both for the Brownian snake and for super-Brownian motion in
dimension one, the historical path corresponding to the minimal spatial
position is a Bessel process of dimension -5. We also discuss a spine
