    Quantum memory for photons: I. Dark state polaritons

    An ideal and reversible transfer technique for the quantum state between light and metastable collective states of matter is presented and analyzed in detail. The method is based on the control of photon propagation in coherently driven 3-level atomic media, in which the group velocity is adiabatically reduced to zero.     State-Level CPR Education Legislation Associated With Higher Survival After Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Older Adults

    Introduction: State-level legislation requiring CPR education prior to high school graduation is associated with an increased likelihood of community-level CPR training. CPR Legislation has also been shown to be associated with increased bystander CPR. We hypothesized that states with CPR Legislation would be associated with higher survival following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Methods: Utilizing 2014 Medicare Claims data for emergency department visits and inpatient stays, we identified OHCA via ICD-9-CM code. CPR Legislation data was collected through online statute review. Exposure to CPR Legislation was assessed using the patient state of residence. All disposition categories were considered survival to discharge except for death/hospice. Associations between categorical variables were assessed by chi-squared test. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio associated with OHCA survival and CPR Legislation, controlling for patient age and sex. Results: States that passed CPR Legislation in 2013 had the highest survival compared to states with earlier passage or no CPR Legislation (22.2% vs 20.6% vs. 21.8%, respectively, p \u3c 0.001). Results of the multiple logistic regression showed CPR Legislation passed in 2013 was associated with a 12% increase in the odds of survival to discharge compared to states with CPR Legislation prior to 2013 (OR: 1.12, p \u3c0.001). Discussion: States with CPR Legislation passed in 2013 were associated with higher survival to discharge and discharge to home, compared to earlier adopters and states with no legislation. Further work is needed to assess the mechanisms underlying this relationship

    A counterbalanced cross-over study of the effects of visual, auditory and no feedback on performance measures in a simulated cardiopulmonary resuscitation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous research has demonstrated that trained rescuers have difficulties achieving and maintaining the correct depth and rate of chest compressions during both in and out of hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Feedback on rate and depth mitigate decline in performance quality but not completely with the residual performance decline attributed to rescuer fatigue. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of feedback (none, auditory only and visual only) on the quality of CPR and rescuer fatigue.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifteen female volunteers performed 10 minutes of 30:2 CPR in each of three feedback conditions: none, auditory only, and visual only. Visual feedback was displayed continuously in graphic form. Auditory feedback was error correcting and provided by a voice assisted CPR manikin. CPR quality measures were collected using SkillReporter<sup>® </sup>software. Blood lactate (mmol/dl) and perceived exertion served as indices of fatigue. One-way and two way repeated measures analyses of variance were used with alpha set <it>a priori </it>at 0.05.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Visual feedback yielded a greater percentage of correct compressions (78.1 ± 8.2%) than did auditory (65.4 ± 7.6%) or no feedback (44.5 ± 8.1%). Compression rate with auditory feedback (87.9 ± 0.5 compressions per minute) was less than it was with both visual and no feedback (p < 0.05). CPR performed with no feedback (39.2 ± 0.5 mm) yielded a shallower average depth of compression and a lower percentage (55 ± 8.9%) of compressions within the accepted 38-50 mm range than did auditory or visual feedback (p < 0.05). The duty cycle for auditory feedback (39.4 ± 1.6%) was less than it was with no feedback (p < 0.05). Auditory feedback produced lower lactate concentrations than did visual feedback (p < 0.05) but there were no differences in perceived exertion.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this study feedback mitigated the negative effects of fatigue on CPR performance and visual feedback yielded better CPR performance than did no feedback or auditory feedback. The perfect confounding of sensory modality and periodicity of feedback (visual feedback provided continuously and auditory feedback provided to correct error) leaves unanswered the question of optimal form and timing of feedback.</p

    Optically induced coherent intra-band dynamics in disordered semiconductors

    On the basis of a tight-binding model for a strongly disordered semiconductor with correlated conduction- and valence band disorder a new coherent dynamical intra-band effect is analyzed. For systems that are excited by two, specially designed ultrashort light-pulse sequences delayed by tau relatively to each other echo-like phenomena are predicted to occur. In addition to the inter-band photon echo which shows up at exactly t=2*tau relative to the first pulse, the system responds with two spontaneous intra-band current pulses preceding and following the appearance of the photon echo. The temporal splitting depends on the electron-hole mass ratio. Calculating the population relaxation rate due to Coulomb scattering, it is concluded that the predicted new dynamical effect should be experimentally observable in an interacting and strongly disordered system, such as the Quantum-Coulomb-Glass.Comment: to be published in Physical Review B15 February 200

    Las nuevas excavaciones (1995-2006) en el yacimiento del Mioceno final de Venta del Moro, Valencia

    From 1995 until 2006 new paleontological excavations were carried out at Venta del Moro (Valencia, Spain), one of the classical Uppermost Miocene (Upper Turolian, MN 13) vertebrate locality of Spain. In the present paper a preliminary synthesis of the methods and main results are presented. Abundant faunal remains were recovered including ten vertebrate taxa no previously recorded from the site. Up to now 43 mammalian species are known from the site. Preliminary list of others groups, as mollusc, are given. The occurrence of foraminifera is reported for the first time.Se presenta una síntesis preliminar de la metodología y de los principales resultados obtenidos en las nuevas campañas de excavación (1995-2006) en la localidad clásica de vertebrados del Mioceno final (Turoliense superior, MN13) de Venta del Moro (Valencia, España). Destaca la actualización de la lista faunística, con la incorporación de más de una decena de taxones de vertebrados no citados anteriormente en el yacimiento. Así, si consideramos sólo la asociación de mamíferos, el listado se compone, por el momento, de 43 taxones. Además, se presentan las listas provisionales de otros grupos, como los moluscos, y se cita por vez primera el hallazgo de foraminíferos

    Last level cache size heterogeneity in embedded systems

    In typical multicore processors, Last Level Caches (LLC) are formed by distributed clusters of memory banks of the same size, namely homogeneous ones. By shutting down part of these clusters to save power along generations of multicore processors, clusters with non homogeneous cache sizes can be originated, named as heterogeneous ones. Given that heterogeneous clusters have typically smaller sizes than homogeneous ones, they present larger miss rates that are likely to deteriorate performance. In this investigation, we study the impact of heterogeneous caches in embedded microprocessors, by having an arbitrary mix of homogeneous and heterogeneous clusters. That is, we propose to evaluate the architectural implications of these heterogeneous caches and a flexible algorithm that can be used to explore them. From scientific applications’ experimental benchmarking, our findings show that microprocessors with heterogeneous clusters present a maximal performance degradation of about 10% and maximal performance improvement of 16%, while obtaining maximum miss hit rate of reduction and improvement up to 10%. In addition, 10% of coherence activity decrease when presenting maximum energy utilization up to 50% and maximum energy reduction of 15%
